MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

It’s finally spring…we hope? We are into May and the last month of the current Board’s term. It’s been a whirl-wind and we are all looking forward to moving beyond the challenges that arose this past term and being able to focus on the future, whether continuing in board po-sitions or not. We believe the hard work we put in this past year has laid a solid foundation for the new Board to jump into the next term. There is still a substantial amount of administrative work to be completed and all forms of revenue streams to be investigated to as-sist with keeping the Hall in tiptop shape, but we should also be able to look at new, fun and exciting program-ming for the Community!

The Annual General Meeting will be taking place on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 7 pm at the Hall. We will be putting forward the updated By-laws for approval by the membership, as well as some Special Resolutions resulting from those by-law revisions. If you haven’t yet had a chance to review those and would like to, please email [email protected].

Are you thinking of maybe getting involved with the RCA as a Director in the new term? We would appreci-ate chatting with you before the AGM about your skills, interests and goals to determine where you’d be a good fit! Maybe you’d like to get involved but already know a Director position, and the responsibilities that come with that outside of the portfolio, isn’t for you, then let’s chat about committee volunteer positions and how you may be able to help with programming in our Commu-nity!

We also want to provide a quick update on bingo. Bingo has been suspended since last September and that sus-pension remains in effect pending the outcome of the AGLC audit and the Board’s subsequent evaluation of whether the bingo program in general will be beneficial to the Association in the future and align with the RCA’s objects and vision, value and mission statements. We will be presenting a comprehensive report to the mem-bership at the AGM.

Unfortunately, Renfrew did not get a Community Clean Up date this year. However, community members can piggyback off surrounding communities. These events are not limited to community residents so you can at-tend any one, just have to drive a bit further. Check out

the Community Cleanups Schedule on the City of Cal-gary website for locations, dates and times. The earliest and closest being Bridgeland/Riverside on May 13. We will of course try for a date again next year.

As Directors it has been hard for us this past year to keep on top of programming and we couldn’t have held the fun events we have, such as RC Car Racing, Lego Build Competition, Earth Day, Tiny Tots Sale, and Adult and Family Pub Nights, without community residents step-ping forward and volunteering their time. We have lots of ideas, but the Directors have had many tasks that have required our attention, like working through the audit process, completing the 2018-2020 Business Plan, working with the financial consultant on ways to keep

TRAFFIC AND PLANNING REPORT

by Nathan Hawryluk

Last month, I mentioned the City’s Transportation Planning department is studying the 8th Ave roundabout and look-ing where to add marked crosswalks on 8th Ave between 10 St and 13A St. This season’s snow delayed the traffic studies that are part of this work, but they audited lighting levels along 8th Ave near Danloe St and Renfrew Dr and will incorporate additional streetlights into their designs.

In March, a representative from the City’s planning depart-ment spoke to the planning and traffic committee about local growth planning. In September, council approved a notice of motion to update north central area redevelop-ment plans as part of the Green Line LRT and Main Streets work, and to explore incorporating work on community planning. While Bridgeland, Crescent Heights, and Win-ston Heights have area redevelopment plans, Renfrew does not. If City Council supports it (first at the Planning and Urban Development Committee, then at Council), then the planning department will start working on local growth planning that includes Renfrew. We expect there will be an initial open house, likely in October 2018, to gather ideas, opportunities, and constraints. In spring of 2019, they will return with some proposals. The project would likely take about a year and finish in fall of 2019.

Last month, I asked what you thought were Renfrew’s strengths, opportunities, and aspirations. I think our strengths are our location, amenities (schools, parks, Ren-frew athletic centre, Stew Hendry and Henry Viney arenas), transit service, trees, heritage, and a variety of housing op-tions including a rich history of missing middle housing (housing options between single family homes and large multi-family buildings like duplexes, walk ups, fourplexes, townhouses, work/live like Stanley Jones Grocery). We can build on these strengths by continuing to build housing so families can afford to live close to our schools and other amenities. We have lots of green space but not much of it can be called a place. You’re never more than 450m, as the crow flies, from a park or stretch of grass in Renfrew. We can make those green spaces genuine places.

I hope Renfrew will be the kind of neighbourhood where:1. More people are on our main streets than cars (people

create jobs, spend money, and change space into a place),2. There is a public gathering place, like a neighbour-

hood square (this might be along a main street or maybe it’s a park),

the RCA viable, and approving the 2018-2019 Budget that have taken up a substantial amount of our time. We want to thank each and every volunteer for the time and effort they put in! We definitely would not have been able to have these events if it wasn’t for you!

And in closing, I personally want to thank each and ev-ery Board Director who has gone above and beyond this past year and committed more time and resources to the RCA than could be expected! It has been a sincere pleasure working with and getting to know each and every one of you this past year. I thank you and tip my hat to each of you: Ian, David, Lynne, Corianne, Nathan, Lisa and Dennis!

As always, make sure to keep an eye on the website, Facebook and Twitter for updates on what’s going on at the Hall and in our Community.

3. Owners of a single-family home are able to add a small rental unit on their property without any real hassle (because it increases housing options, provides ex-tra income for a homeowner and allows housing for people of diverse ages),

4. It is safe and feasible for children to walk or bike to school and many of their other activities without adult supervision (because it will be safe and feasible for everyone else to walk or bike), and

5. Three generations of a family could reasonably find a place to live, all within walking distance of each other.

To make that possible, we’ll need more people help-ing us work on local growth planning, character home retention, active transportation and traffic, and mak-ing our spaces real places. Come to our annual general meeting on Tuesday, May 29th at 7pm at the Hall to have your say in our community association’s future. And come join our planning and traffic committee, which meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm at the Hall, to help us work to make Renfrew a better place for everyone!

It’s hard to believe, especially with how long the snow lasted this year, that we are already starting work plan-ning our Stampede Day festivities. As always, we expect it to be a stompin’ good time! The day starts off with a stampede breakfast (which has been called the best in the city). Going on at the same time is the Kids Carnival with bouncy castles, prizes and many different games!

As always, we will have the horseshoes tournament run-ning in the afternoon followed by the outdoor BBQ. The evening events then switch to adult only as we open the beer gardens and start up the live music. You don’t want to miss this!

This event is a huge undertaking, and I have luckily had a community member, Elisa, step up to help do some plan-ning this year – thanks! However, we need TONS more help from community members – from setup the day before, to cooking and serving on the day and cleaning up the next morning. Please consider helping make this event live up to its reputation! If you’d like to lend a hand, please e-mail me at [email protected]. Stay tuned for the planning meeting dates and make sure to e-mail me if you’re not already on the volunteer e-mail list!

National Paramedic Services Week May 27–June 2, 2018National Paramedic Services Week honours the paramedic profession and recognizes the men and women of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providing this key public service. It is also an op-portunity for the public to better understand the important role EMS has within both the health care system and our communities.

The year’s national theme is, Paramedics: Health. Community. You.

Whether directly, or indirectly, every Albertan has felt the importance of the service paramedics pro-vide. Paramedics are trained health care profes-sionals who stabilize and treat patents before and during transport to hospital. In some areas of the province, paramedics are now working side-by-side their health care colleagues in hospitals and community care facilities.

•There are over 4,000 EMS practitioners and 550 ambulances in the Alberta Health Services system province-wide;

•Approximately 5,500 patients will be transferred by fixed wing aircraft through contracted air am-bulance providers in Alberta this year;

•EMS dispatch receives over 500,000 ground am-bulance calls each year.

EMS practitioners across the Alberta and Canada will be celebrating National Paramedic Services Week in a variety of ways. Watch for information in your local media as well as AHS EMS Twitter (@ahs_ems), Facebook (@albertahealthservices-EMS) and ahs.ca/ems about events happening in your community.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than four million Albertans and it’s more than 661,848 square kilometers. Its mission is to provide a patient-fo-cused, quality health system that is accessible and sustainable for all Albertans.
