NOTES FROM GARY MAGRINO –
(And answers to questions posed at the February
Town Hall Meeting)
Golf Clubs: In response to your requests, I met
with the Presidents of the 18 and 9 Hole Men’s and
Women’s Golf Clubs to discuss the system of the
club members paying club weekly fees at the Golf
Shop and the Golf Shop issuing a net check to the
club reduced only by the amount of club winnings
which are issued as Golf Shop “script”. Based on
our discussions, I gave the four clubs the option of
the individual clubs taking over the responsibility of
collecting and accounting for weekly fees and
depositing the pay-out amounts in the Golf Shop
(essentially a reversal of the current system) or
keeping the current system. In either event, the
Golf Shop does not retain any funds from weekly
club fees other than the amounts paid out as script.
Golf Shop script is redeemable for bar-coded
merchandise and range tokens.
Short-Term Rentals: September 1st begins Open
Season for Short-Term Rentals. Anyone wishing to
reserve a specific site for 1 month or less can make
that reservation beginning September 1st.
Charity Collection Boxes: The Salvation Army,
Habitat for Humanity, and Yuma Community Food
Bank collection boxes located throughout the Resort
hold completed gifts given by our residents to the
charitable organizations. Please do not take
anything from these collection points. That would
be stealing from the charitable organization.
Residents who wish to make free goods
available to other residents should place those
items at the end of your site on “Walk, Talk, &
Shop” day marked “FREE”. Items in the
charity collections boxes are already donated to
the specific charity.
Mail Forwarding: When you leave us for the
summer, please stop at the Administration
Office and let us know. This enables our
Security personnel to better protect your
property. For mail forwarding, please pick-up
a mail forwarding white envelope at the
Administration Office. Complete the
information required and request that the office
staff print mail forwarding labels for you. We
will print forwarding address labels at $1 per
30 label sheet. If mail forwarding labels are
not submitted, mail will be returned to the
sender. You should discuss additional details
regarding your mail forwarding desires at the
Administration Office.
What is the Rural Metro Fee that Annual
Renters Pay?
Sites and park models that are billed annually
are required to pay a separate fee of $65 for
Rural Metro. This fee covers the cost of a
blanket insurance policy covering those sites.
The policy covers fire safety inspections,
hazardous materials response, firefighting,
emergency first aid, resuscitators and oxygen
service, and removal of poisonous reptiles. The
Cocopah GazetteMarch 2018
Rural Metro policy does not cover ambulance
transport service.
Bring Your Friends: We want you to enjoy your
time here and recommend Cocopah RV & Golf
Resort to your friends. We understand that “people
buy from people”. We are preparing a pocket-size
brochure describing the Resort that we hope you
will share with your (friendly) friends at home.
We’d love your friends to join us. We expect that
the brochure will be available in the Administration
Office in mid-March and will be distributed at
various end-of-season events. Please take a
brochure and bring a friend next season.
We are Listening: Last, we want to hear from you.
Cocopah RV & Golf Resort is your home away
from home. Many of you spend 6 or 7 months each
year living here. We are thankful that you have
chosen to enjoy our fantastic resort and the
wonderful Yuma weather. We strive to tailor the
Resort to meet your desires. In response to your
requests, over the past few years the Cocopah Tribe
has invested in significant capital improvements
such as building the Pickle Ball Courts, making
swimming pool improvements, and funding
enhanced irrigation and fertilizer systems for the
golf course. We recently had Casey Ruddick from
Southwest Turf Support in Phoenix provide advice
to us on golf course maintenance. Based on his
recommendations, in March we are applying liquid
fertilizer through both the spraying machine and via
our irrigation system. This summer all the washers
and dryers in the laundry rooms will be replaced
and we are working on obtaining enhanced Wi-Fi
service. We are investigating the possibility of the
tennis courts being made “convertible” into
pickle ball courts so that players would have
the option of either sport. That said, we need
your support as well.
Tell Us What You Think: At the end of this
Gazette is a survey form for you to tell us how
we can make the Cocopah RV & Golf Resort
the best resort for winter visitors in southern
Arizona. I ask that before you leave for the
season, please complete this short survey and
return it to the box in the Administration
Office. I am personally responsible for
business activities of the Cocopah Tribe. I do
not wish to expend resources on amenities that
residents do not value. Conversely, I do want
to focus our resources on the things you want.
I promise to read every survey completed.

SOUP NIGHT
The March Soup Night potluck will be held on
Monday, March 5th. Each household brings a
crockpot of soup, salad, or dessert to share. So that
there is enough food for everyone, please bring
enough to feed 10-12 people. Bring your own

5:00 pm. Sign up in Activities so there are enough

CARD BINGO
Join residents for a good time and a chance to win
some small cash. “Card Bingo” is played on
Sunday nights from 7:00-9:00 p.m. through the end
of March. We play 18-20 games of “Card Bingo”
each evening. The size of the pot is dependent on
the number of people participating. The cost per
game is determined by the spin of the wheel and is
either 20 cents, 25 cents, or 50 cents. There are
always three 50 cent games, but no more than three.
Winning BINGO’s get the full amount of money
collected. If fifty people attend and the game is for
50 cents, then the prize money for that game would
be $25.00. The greater the number of
participants the bigger the pots won. Again,
this year we have a progressive pot. An
evening of entertainment playing “Card Bingo”
costs around $5.00.
SECURITY
SPEEDING – Anthony Quintero, Security
Manager, reported that as of the end of
February 2018 the Security Department has
made 301 traffic stops this season for excessive
speed. Slow Down!
Anthony also asks once again that anyone who
sees suspicious activity or excessive speeding
call the Security Office immediately at 928-
503-0676. Please do not wait until the next day
to report incidents as there is little the Security
personnel can do after the fact.
AGRICULTURE IS YUMA’S
NUMBER 1 INDUSTRY
Please stay out of the fields and citrus groves!
Agriculture land is private property –
trespassers are prosecuted. If even one
footprint is found in a field, the farmer cannot
harvest a 40 ft. section in each direction. The
USDA mandates that the farmer can lose the
entire field if several footprints are found.
There is no gleaning! Please be a good visitor
and help Yuma preserve the agriculture on
which the residents depend.

CLEAN OUT YOUR PANTRY
Each spring the residents of Cocopah RV & Golf
Resort support the Yuma Community Food Bank by
collecting non-perishable, unopened foods to
support the local community. The unemployment
rate in Yuma County is the highest in the U.S.
Many children are hungry. When you are cleaning
out your winter home prior to the trek northward,
please consider the less fortunate. Food collection
boxes are located in the Administration Office and
the Activities Lobby.
PUBLIC SAFETY EXTRAVAGANZA
Anthony Quintero, Security Manager, reports that
the Public Safety Extravaganza was a great success.
On February 17th nearly 200 residents visited with
the various public safety agencies in attendance.
HELICOPTER LANDING
A helicopter from Aerocare, a medical
transport company, landed on the driving range
shortly before 9:00 am.
Residents and golfers along the 17th fairway
were thrilled to watch it land. Aerocare
provides medical transport when a patient
needs medical care that is not available in
Yuma. Aerocare runs three aircraft, 2
helicopters (one based at Yuma Airport, the
other based at the Yuma Regional Medical
Center) and one fixed wing aircraft (Based at
the Yuma airport) to provide medical transport
from Yuma to various places in the western
United States. Pilot Jeff Martuscelli explained
that each aircraft is staffed with a pilot, a nurse,
and a paramedic who ensure the patient’s safety
enroute to their destination.
Cocopah GazetteMarch 2018
U.S. BORDER PATROL PROTECTION
The United States Customs Service brought a 24 ft.,
turbo diesel engine jet drive fast boat that patrols the
Colorado River from the Cocopah RV & Golf
Resort south to the Morales Dam (County Rt. 9).
Border Patrol agent Michael Espinoza explained
that this boat was purchased by the United States
government specifically for our section of the river.
The boat requires only 4 inches of water depth on a
plane and merely 11 inches of water in static
conditions. Agent Espinoza further explained that
several years ago illegal vehicle crossings from
Mexico were a problem along the Colorado River.
In response, the U.S. Border Patrol built
“Normandy-style” fences along the border at the
Colorado River. These fences prevent the
construction of ramps that could be easily overcome
by other more vertical walls. As a result, illegal
vehicle crossing are no longer a major problem
along the river. Currently the enforcement focus is
on individuals walking or “swimming” up the
Colorado River. The fast boat and the personnel
assigned to it provide a quick response to that type
of intrusion. Given our proximity to the
border, the U.S. Border Patrol is in the resort
on a daily basis and is constantly patrolling the
Colorado River in our sector. Agent Espinoza
explained that as a result of enforcement action
in this sector, most illegal crossings have
moved further east where the border is further
away from populated areas and where
enforcement requires fewer law enforcement
resources. To the east, fewer agents are able to
cover a larger surface area because the distance
from the border to a major transportation route
is greater (I-8 is 75 miles from the border at
Gila Bend vise 10 miles in the Foothills) and
video surveillance is more effective.
COCOPAH OFFICE OF
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Mike Fila, a retired New York Firefighter, is
the Director of the Cocopah Department of
Emergency Management.
Mike emphasized how important it is for
everyone to be mindful of standing water.
While we live in a desert, it takes only a capful
of water for 7,000 mosquitos to breed. We all
despise mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.
Please be mindful of standing water and keep
water features and plant catch-bases clear of
standing water.
Cocopah GazetteMarch 2018
9
Mike ran a very active table engaging with many
residents. Standing on the sideline, your author
learned lots of useful information:
? Query: - What does it mean when that water
treatment plant south of us on Levy Road sounds an
alarm? --- A: the Water Treatment Plant, owned by
the Bureau of Reclamation, is decommissioned.
They perform routine siren testing (annoying it is!).
If there was a real emergency, Cocopah RV Security
and the Cocopah Police would notify you whether
to shelter in place or evacuate. You should expect
that in the event of a real emergency Cocopah
Security and Cocopah Police would be driving
the resort roads with bullhorns blaring.
Speaking of emergency notifications – Mike
also announced a Cocopah Office of
Emergency Management app available on your
smartphone. On the App Store go to
“CocopahOEM”. “Allow” notifications. By
installing and allowing this app, in the event of
a real emergency (for example an earthquake, a
hazmat fire on I-8, or a hazardous spill from the
railroad) the Cocopah Office of Emergency
Management would be able to contact you and
advise you as to the best action you should
take. When asked what he wished reported to
our residents Mike responded, “How well
prepared we are to take care of you.”
RURAL METRO FIRE
Rural Metro Responds to all incidents in
Cocopah RV & Golf Resort. That means if you
have a medical emergency and call 911, Rural
Metro will respond, probably before an
ambulance gets here. All the firefighters
employed by Rural Metro are cross-trained;
each is an EMT or Paramedic as well as a
Firefighter.
Rural Metro had mannequins at the Public
Safety Extravaganza to teach residents the
“TRIPLE C’S” – Continuous Chest
Compressions. Continuous Chest
Compressions are the new standard for
Cocopah GazetteMarch 2018
bystanders dealing with an emergency cardiac
event.
First year Cocopah RV residents Mary and Joseph
Terpstra received instruction in the proper count for
CCC. Anthony Quintero, our Security Manager,
plans future events to train residents in CCC.
SMOKE DETECTORS
Everyone knows smoke detectors are important and
everyone hates the beeping of an expiring battery.
Which one is beeping? How Annoying?? Your
author visited with Rural Metro Fire … and we
thought we had a solution. Rural Metro
recommended to residents that they replace every
smoke detector in their unit when the residents
return in the fall. (A very real risk is that your
smoke detector battery could expire in May, beep
slowly throughout the summer, and by October
become totally silent. When you return in the fall
you would have no notice that you were
unprotected. You would have no working
smoke detector but unlike your stick house, in
your park model there would be no slow beep.)
Our solution was good but not good enough.
Next your author visited the American Red
Cross booth.
AMERICAN RED CROSS
Mr. Pat Hearn explained that the American Red
Cross is very worried about people not being
protected by smoke detectors. In fact, if
residents signed up with the Red Cross at the
Security Expo, the Red Cross will install FREE
smoke detectors in any residence (including
RVs) where the existing smoke detector is over
10 years old or there were insufficient smoke
detectors in the residence. Anyone living in a
park model that is over 10 years old might
consider checking whether their smoke detector
is over 10 years old. Oh, and the best part –
these new smoke detectors do not have
replaceable batteries; you can have the new
smoke detector installed and it lasts 10 years.
No more annoying beeps!!
WALK TALK & SHOP
Shopping .. Selling ..
Cocopah RV and Golf Resort hosts Walk,
Talk & Shop on the first Saturday of each
month. Walk, Talk & Shop is a community
sale where residents either sell items at their
site or shop at other sites in the park – a great
big community yard sale. Items are usually put
Cocopah GazetteMarch 2018

outside either on the driveway or deck so that when
driving by the items are easy to spot. Larger items
such as furniture may be announced with a sign.
Sellers should have items displayed by 9:00 am.
The sale continues until noon. On Saturday, March
3rd, get in your golf cart and drive the roads of our
community looking for the perfect find. The next
opportunity is November 5th.
CRAFT FAIR
The final Craft Fair of the season will be held on
March 12th in the ballroom from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
As this is the end of season for the majority of
vendors in Yuma, they will want to close out
season-end inventory. There should be good buys
available. Resort attendance was great for our
February Fair. Many thanks to all of you who
attended. The March 12th show will have drawings
and coffee and donuts will be available for purchase
from Kathy and Elaine. Thank you for all your help
this season. Anyone who is interested in being a
vendor or has questions regarding the Craft Fairs,
please call Joyce Prince at 503-307-5982.

CRAFTS
COCOPAH QUILTERS
Our quilting ladies continue to engage in their
passion for sewing every Tuesday and Friday in
Room 115 and the Ceramic room. A wide variety
of quilting and sewing projects have been
completed this year including over thirty quilts
made for the benefit of various charities. We
remind you to mark March 11th from 1:00 p.m.
to 3:00 p.m. on your calendar when these
projects will be on display during the annual
Artisan Show in the Ballroom. A special item
that will be on display is the raffle quilt that the
group has completed to be raffled next season.
Tickets will be available in the fall. Proceeds
go to charity. The Quilters all wish to recognize
and thank Lianna Muhlieman, one of our
dedicated members, who put many hours into
the sewing of this item.
Have a good summer everyone!

ARTISAN SHOW
On March 11th from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm in the
Ballroom join in celebrating the artists here at
Cocopah, and the beautiful results they have created
from the time spent in the various classes. We are
very lucky to have skilled artists and
instructors among us who produce many different
items, of which some will be for sale. Come stroll
among the tables of beautiful work and have coffee
and cookies and see an example of the classes
available to anyone in the resort.
WORDS WITH WINE BOOK CLUB
The Cocopah RV Book club will meet on Thursday,
March 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the library to discuss
“Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. From
the publisher: “Based on one of America’s most
notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia
Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption
organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to
wealthy families all over the country—Lisa
Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately
uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths
we take can lead to many places, the heart
never forgets where we belong.”

LADIES’ 9 HOLE GOLF CLUB
January has flown by with the weather reminding us
why we are “Snowbirds”!! Club members have
certainly shown their prowess on the course. The
Chip-ins were numbered at 37 and the Birdies were
numbered at 6. Keep up the good work ladies. Once
again the Golfer of the Month was Debi Hale, she is
on fire!!! February brought the Classic Mixer and
Luncheon. Eighty-two ladies participated and held
their own with their male counter parts. The
luncheon on Saturday, catered by The Texas
Roadhouse, was excellent. A big shout out to the
Nine Hole Men’s Club and to the Nine Hole Ladies’
Club who all worked together to make the day
successful.
Prior to teeing up on Hole # 1 on February 13th, all
the Ladies received a Valentine card and a little
gift. The luncheon that followed game play was a
big success. Karen Craigue and her gang organized
a great hamburger lunch catered by the 19th Hole.
Thank you for a job well done. Prior to the meal, the
ladies had a little fun with a game that involved the
rules of golf. All “aced” it! Club elections were also
held at the luncheon. The current Executive board
was returned to office by acclamation as follows:
President – Sue Nichols, Vice President – Jane
Parrent, Treasurer – Jan Skyberg, and Secretary –
Michelle Chuchmuch.
The Club Annual Banquet is March 13th. Remember
the theme is “Hawaiian Holiday” so come dressed
for the Islands! The sign-up sheets for the Annual
Banquet are now posted in the vestibule. Be
sure to check off your meal preference.
We are still looking for volunteers to sign up
for next years’ luncheons. You won’t be on
your own; this year’s chairpersons will be
available to help you avoid any pitfalls that
they may have encountered. Next year we are
hosting the 9/18 Hole Ladies mixer and will
need a Chairperson and volunteers for that as
well. Heck we might even golf that day.
- Michelle Chuchmuch
MEN’S 9 HOLE GOLF
As February ends and March begins we find
ourselves asking: Where did the winter go??
Final membership numbers put us at 155,
including 25 1st time members.
Our two big January events were the BBQ and
Away Day golf at Yuma Country Club. Both
were very successful with high membership
participation.
February had our Mixed Classic Golf and
Banquet with the Ladies 9 Hole Golf Club.
Positive feedback was astounding as many
members from both clubs went out of their way
to make it known how much fun they had. This
will make both clubs try harder to make next
years Mixed Classic even more fun and
successful. The Men’s Niners would like to
extend a special thanks to Myron and Stan
Chuchmuch for going above and beyond as
Cocopah GazetteMarch 2018
they generally tend to do. Our club’s success is
parallel to their efforts.
In March we will have our year-end meeting and
banquet on the Monday, March 12th. This is
followed by the unofficial winding down of our
Tuesday play as the number of players begins to
dwindle. The Men’s Niners hope you have a great
summer with safe travels no matter how near or far.
