RABBI’S MESSAGE
Happy Adar II! This is
the month of Purim and
we are commanded to be
happy.
We will celebrate Purim
as a community on
March 20 at 7pm—come
in costume and hear a silly, but whole-
hearted, rendition of music by The
Eagles.
In this month, try to think about what
makes you happy. Lists, for example,
make me happy. And so I want to
share one with you on things you
might not have known about Purim.
Top Ten things you did not know
about Purim:
1) The Purim Spiel has been around
since at least the 18th century in
Eastern Europe.
2) Dressing like another gender is not
only permitted but even suggested in
some communities on Purim.
3) If you live in a walled city, you
have to wait an extra day to celebrate
Purim. Well, actually only if it was
walled 3300 years ago during the time
of Biblical Joshua. Safe to say, here in
Hendersonville, we will celebrate on
the 14th of Adar.
4) God’s name is not mentioned
anywhere is the Book of Esther (the
megillah read on Purim)

The C.I.T.’s (Community Involvement Team) are
planning the 7th annual Mitzvah Day, April 7th. We are
working together to achieve the Long Range Plan
objective of Hunger, Homelessness, and Children for
the projects we offer the congregation… Please sign up
to help our community… there will be more projects in
the Agudas Israel social hall…something for everyone.
WATCH FOR THE SIGN UP APPLICATION
COMING TO YOU SHORTLY. Please bring in the
items that we are collecting and place them into the
designated cartons in the Board Room.
Sisterhood is preparing a special Shabbat Service on
Friday, March 8th.
This year’s Purimspiel, according to the Eagles,
promises to be great fun and entertaining, presented by
our own Agudas Israel performers…complemented with
delicious homemade Hamantashen made by the
Balabusta Bakers…do not miss it on Wednesday,
March 20th, 7pm. The Brotherhood has been collecting items for their
Yard Sale on Sunday, April 28th… see how you can
help by donating the items they are looking for…tools,
furniture, etc…..Contact Sam Gess with questions.
The Mountain Jewish Festival planning is underway
for June 23rd. It literally takes a village to make this
happen… Please answer their call to help make this
event another huge success. Co-Chairs of the event, Karen Murray and Randye
Unsell, are busy getting all of the teams lined up. Fund
Raising Chairs, Sam Gess and Linda Perkel, are selling
ads and are looking for donors for food tables and more.
The Balabusta Bakers are back in the kitchen preparing
delicious goodies for our festival. Join them, meet new
people, and enjoy the camaraderie...You DO NOT have
to know how to bake to help out. Contact Natalie Zitnick
and Joan Kershner to sign up.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Please remember that
we are on a 10 month financial schedule and ALL
commitments should be PAID IN FULL by the end of
April. This will help us in the budgeting process for the
next fiscal year.
Special thanks to my Vice President, David Monoson,
for holding down the fort while Alan and I were traveling
to China.
There is always a lot going on at Agudas Israel…
Save these important dates and watch for more

Brotherhood Briefs The winter months are always slow but things never
come to a halt. Activities still proceed and many
individual Brotherhood members continue to be involved
in Agudas supporting the Temple on a day to day basis.
First the activities. Jerry Salatino and Ron Weintraub
organized a great outing to the Blue Ridge Log Cabin
manufacturing facility in Tryon. The factory prefabs log
cabin style home and ships them in modules to be erected
on sites in about 30 of the US states. We viewed the
process from construction of the floors to the finished
product with walls and a roof. We also walked through
many of their models which were beautifully appointed.
Thanks guys from the 10 of us that enjoyed the
adventure.
As mentioned in previous newsletters the Brotherhood
Yard Sale is coming on April 28. We have already
accumulated enough items to take up over 40% of the
storage unit space we rented since January. Much more is
needed. Please look at what you have at home and if you
don't need items anymore talk to Sam Gess or myself
about including them in the sale. We are looking for
5) Mishloachmanot literally means “sending portions”. In
Esther 9:19 we read “Therefore the Jews of the villages,
that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the 14th day of
the month of a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday,
and of sending portions to one another.” Small gift
baskets are commonly sent to ones’ friends. See if you
can find a person to deliver it too, as it says “send”, not
just “give”. Pajama-gram anyone?
6) It is unclear how old Esther was. Some say her age
was 40, or 80, or 75.
7)Someone made sushi hamentaschen…seriously.
8) On Esther’s beauty, the debate whether she is one of
the most beautiful women ever (along the lines of Sarah,
Avigail, and Rahav), average, or even green. She was
green before Kermit or Wicked!
9) Mordechai was her cousin [“he was foster father to
Esther—his uncle’s daughter” Es 2:7]. Or her uncle
[“When the turn came for Esther daughter of Abigail—
the uncle of Mordecai, who had adopted her as his own
daughter” Es 2:15] Or her wet nurse [Gen Rabbah 30:8].
Or her husband [BT Megillah 13a]. And you thought
your relationships were confusing!
10) Synagogue and sanctuary decorum are thrown out the
window for Purim! Yippie-kai-yay all you want and
come dressed however you want (this it the time of year
when it is appropriate to wear a bathrobe and slippers to
shul!)
Chag Purim Sameach!
Warmly, Rabbi Rachael Jackson
Round 1 of “Dinner for Six” was a great success. Now it’s time to mix up the participants and form new groups. We’ve heard many reports of great food, gracious hospitality, lots of laughter, and new friendships being formed. We look forward to Round 2. Are you in? If you didn’t have a chance to sign up previously, now is your chance as we form new groups. To join, simply reply to Lynn Lewis at [email protected] and indicate your name(s), e-mail address(es), phone numbers, and whether you are joining as a couple or a single. For those who participated in Round 1, please let us know if you wish to continue. Whoever signs up will be contacted by your first host to coordinate dates, times, and the location of your first dinner/brunch or outing. We’ll begin Round 2 on April 1st. We look forward to new faces and places to meet monthly in April, May, and June. Don’t miss out on a really super social event!
For members who did participate in Round 1, three couples will be
selected at random to participate in a dinner with the rabbi in March.
The selections will be made in the near future, and if you are one of
the lucky ones, you will be notified.
Dinner for Six
Round Two
furniture, tools, and other items. More information about
the sale will be available in the upcoming months.
This is an important fundraiser for the Brotherhood
and the Temple, please help us out.
In the opening paragraph I mentioned that overall group
activities are slow in the winter but individuals are still
very active on projects around Agudas. I'd like to
recognize a few but overall thank all Brotherhood
members for the work they do daily at our Temple.
David Monoson is in charge of Operations and Building.
It's a non-stop job on a daily basis. David is there when the
building roof leaks, the heating and air conditioning
systems don't work and a variety of other problems. If you
noticed, a new metal roof adorns the front of the Temple.
Without David's diligence these solutions would not occur
so easily. Thanks David from all of us
Sid Williams always works in the background to keep
our security system up to date and working, to make sure
our audio visual system is both really visual and can be
heard, and various other technology items are in place and
operative. Thanks Sid.
Bill Lavine when he is not spending time evaluating our
progress on the Strategic Plan or chairing and participating
in the Finance Committee, is baking and cooking for the
upcoming MJF. Thanks Bill
I know there are many more people I left out and again I
thank each and every one of you, because without your
participation the "wheels would not work as well".

HEBREW IMMIGRANT AID SOCIETY
By Rabbi Philip J Bentley
The most basic ethical precept in
Judaism is hospitality. That comes
from Abraham and it is, therefore,
a primary practice also in
Christianity and Islam.
Three days after circumcising
himself, 99-year-old Abraham sets up his tent at a
crossroads open to all four directions. Three strangers
appear and Abraham washes their feet and invites them
to dine. He chases down a calf for Sarah to prepare and
serves the strangers their meal.
Then God sent his angels to save Lot’s family because
Sodom was about to be destroyed for its sins. What was
the sin of Sodom? It had nothing to do with sex. The sin
of Sodom, according to our tradition, was hostility
towards and maltreatment of strangers in Sodom. The
context of the destruction of Sodom is in this theme of
hospitality.
Afterwards, the Torah tells us, Abraham planted a
tamarisk tree. Tamarisk in Hebrew is Eyshel, spelled
Alef, Shin, Lamed. Our Rabbis taught that Alef stands
for Okhel (food), Shin stands for Shtiyah(drink), and
Lamed stands for Lina (putting someone up overnight) or
Leviyah (accompaniment down the road – showing the
way). These are the basic elements of hospitality.
But what does the Torah say about how we should
treat foreigners among us? “You shall treat the stranger
who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you
shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the
land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus
19:34) The word “you shall love” (V’ahavta) is the same
as that in “You shall love the Eternal your God” and
“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Our Rabbis
read these three uses of the same word as equating these
three precepts – love of God, love of one’s fellow, love
of the foreigner.
Whatever your views on American immigration
policy, your Jewish tradition demands you consider this

ALL CONGREGANTS are encouraged to wear their name tag during services. This is to enhance friendliness, security and approachability for everyone so we know who’s who. The security people on duty will ask arrivals to put on their name tag as they enter the synagogue. Thank you for your cooperation.

basic aspect of our faith tradition. Of course, that leaves
a fair amount of latitude, but it does tell us that we are
judged on how we treat foreigners.
Most, if not all, of us who are part of this community
have ancestors who were aided by a Jewish organization
at Ellis Island and elsewhere. Those who are
themselves first generation Americans (the immigrant
generation) may have also been helped by this
organization. I am referring to HIAS, the Hebrew
Immigrant Aid Society.
Robert D. Bowers, the man who committed the Tree
of Life Massacre, posted a message before he went to
the synagogue condemning HIAS. Right-wing anti-
Semitic and anti-immigrant extremists hate HIAS
because it is Jewish and also helps immigrants.
HIAS was founded in a Manhattan store-front in
1881, the year that Jews started coming to America from
Eastern Europe in great numbers. Their work continues
to this day, but now HIAS is a leading provider of
services for migrants and refugees all over the world.
Here is their basic statement of what they do from their
home page (www.hias.org)
HIAS works around the world to protect refugees
who have been forced to flee their homelands because
of who they are, including ethnic, religious, and sexual
minorities. For more than 130 years, HIAS has been
helping refugees rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.
They are doing this work in many countries. For
example, they are helping Colombian refugees in
Venezuela and hundreds of thousands of Somali
refugees in Kenya. Of course, they are also acting as
advocates for Latin Americans seeking refugee status in
this country. They work with border patrols to help
provide legal and other kinds of counsel to those
seeking asylum.
Our tradition leaves no room for doubt. Because we
are Jews, we are required to help the stranger among us.
Even if such will be deported after legal process, our
tradition demands humane treatment while they are
here, even if they came in in violation of our laws.
