Jimmy Rainwater, PGAAssistant Golf ProfessionalWINDYKE JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE

Good weather is just around the corner and with it will be a fun filled Spring and Summer of activities for your children. What are you going to do to get them golf ready? Our Windyke Junior Golf League is the perfect introduction into actually playing golf competitively regardless of their current skill. Our league is scaled to their age and ability because it is solely at the Executive Par 3 course and is set up in team format where they can learn as a group about how to play our great game. Within this league, our juniors will be divided amongst teams each week and coached by our professional staff (Brock Shafer, Andrew Argotsinger, Luke Reilly, and James Rainwater) where they will compete against each other teams in a 6-hole matchplay format on Satur-days throughout April and May. Prior to these matches each coach will prepare his team through group clin-ics with application towards real playing. New this year, we will be allowing already participating members to sponsor non-members to compete as well. So, if your child has a friend that would like to play as well they are invited too. Detailed information of our league are as follows, call the pro shop to sign up (901)755-3160.

CLUB STORAGEWith the golf season approaching, club storage is quickly filling up! Reserve your spot in the bag room for the year for only $135 dollars ($11 a month!). Stop lugging your heavy bag to and from the parking lot and let us store them for you! Call the golf shop for more information or to sign up. (901)755-3160.

Tuesday Night Men’s LeagueIt’s almost that time again! Last year was the 10th year for our very successful Tuesday Night Men’s Group. This year promises to be the biggest and best one yet!

The formats will remain similar to last year’s Men’s Night with two divisions. For several years, we have been flighting the event so that players were only competing against players of similar abilities. Due to the success of the flighting, we went one step further. We included a scratch division. The formats will closely follow the regular formats, but there will be no handicap involved. The purpose of this was to not only attract more players but to also allow more players to feel as if they have a great chance of competing no matter their handicap. This will strictly be a voluntary flight so you will have to sign up for it each week and can go back and forth if you choose between the scratch division and the regular division. There will be a 6 and below index suggested to play in the scratch and all players will play from the gold tees regardless of age. This was something that was asked for by players already playing in Men’s Night and we hope that those interested will not only participate, but get their friends who have not played in Men’s Night before to play as well. This year we will again award points for playing and for finishing “in the money.” We will then keep up with the points and post them to our website so that you can track your progress. We will use $1 of each player’s weekly entry fee to build a pot that will be awarded to the top 20 players after the season is over at the final event, which will be held on Sunday, October 6.

One of the reasons that we feel we were so successful is there is no league to join and you did not have to play in every event to win. This will still be the case with 95% of the weekly entry fee going directly to that week’s event. So, if you are a new member or have been around since the trees were planted, this will be a great time for you to come out and meet other Windyke members or maybe find a new group to play with during other times of the week. We again will be making the pairings each week so sign up will be strictly individual. One of the main reasons for starting this group is for members to meet other members and get out of the routine of playing with the same old group each week. A few of the most important points are listed below: •Tuesdaysat5:30pmforthemajorityoftheseason •Calltosignupby3:00pmontheTuesdaythatyouwishtoplay •OfficialplaywithpointsApril2–October1withtheFinalbeingonSunday,October6th •$20perweektoplayincludingcartandprizes •Prizespaidouteachweek •Windykeproshopstafftomakepairingseachweek •Pointsraceforayear-longchampion •Optionaldinnerwhileyouwaitforprizes •Lotsoffun!

This group is a huge success because of your feedback and your commitment to support it. In order to keep it successful, we will again need your support and participation. We also need you to tell your friends so that this group will continue to grow. Brent Ratliff

Triple FormatApril 6th West Course • 8:00 am Shotgun

Lunch Included

If you have never played in a Triple Format event then you owe it to yourself to check this one out. The way a Triple Format works is the first nine holes is a best ball, the second nine is a scramble, and then after lunch, the last nine is alternate shot. This is one of those formats that players talk about and tell stories for years to come. So, if you are looking to kick start your golf tournament season with a fun event then this one is for you! Guidelines are as follows: • Two Person Teams • Make Your Own Team or sign up as an individual and we will pair you. • This event is open to all classifications of members and each team may have 1 guest • Each team’s handicap is based on the following formula using a players USGA index: Sum of the two players index minus ½ of the difference. Example: Greg Hynes 4.0 Russ Garner 1.5 5.5 – 1.25 = 4.25 We will then use the team’s index to flight the teams before play. Once your team’s handicap has been used for flighting purposes it will not be used again.

• If you sign up as an individual, we can find you a partner • Windyke Cup points event! • Entry fee is $125 including cart and is payable by member charge, cash or check (includes prizes, cart and lunch). • All players canceling after April 4th at 5 PM will be charged for the entry fee.

Tee Assignments: • Seniors 75+ play Red • Seniors 60-74 play White • Female and Junior Golfers under 12 with index of 7.5 and below play White Tees • Female and Junior Golfers under 12 with index of 7.6 and above play Red Tees • All other players play Gold • Championship Flight will play Blue Tees except Men 60+ will play Gold

• Approximate payout will be as follows (based on 108 players and 5 flights) First Place $700/Team Second Place $500/Team Third Place $300/Team Fourth Place $200/Team TO SIGN UP OR IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, Call: (901)755-3160 or E-mail: [email protected]

Tip from the ProBefore I get to the tip of the month, a quick reminder to parents that junior golf activities begin in April with S.N.A.G. for ages 4-7 and the Windyke Junior League for ages 6-12. You can sign up by calling the ProShop. The 2019 schedule is online for all those moms scheduling ahead for the summer. Clinics will start late May. Invite non-members to participate with your children, as well. Online enrollment is available through various links.

Seeing Phil Michaelson win at Pebble Beach at age 48 was encouraging to us all. Good golf can be played well at any age. My recommendations would be to stay fit and keep working on technique to keep the power flow going. I often recommend exercises to accompany my lessons. Exercises that are ‘golf-specific’ have a dual purpose: fitness and swing development all in one drill.

My favorite ‘golf-specific’ exercises are usually pulley related. But, any fitness exercise done well that specifi-cally attacks a flexibility or strength weakness is good for your game. Pulley exercises mimic the golf motion and build golf flexibility and strength. Pulleys are not mass muscle builders, but sinewy strength and flexibility builders. My favorite is the side pulley for backswing and downswing building. When facing one direction the backswing is built as you extend your arms in a straight triangle away from the weight stack. When you rotate 180 degrees to pull the arms away from the weight stack in a downswing motion, make sure your left arm is straight but your right arm is bent with the elbow on the right hip (right-handed player). Also, look for a bowed left wrist toward the target (should happen naturally. This drill increases wrist lag that will promote a full wide arc in the follow through. Here is one link for quick fire training with a pulley:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E0npjLZ8VI

I am certified with the leading golf performance company in the world called T.P.I., or the Titleist Performance Institute. Let me aid you in the swing development process by prescribing exercises in your lesson or by giving you a flexibility and strength screening to help you identify weak or inflexible muscle groups.
