  • Rent at 20 (and then some)

For a year and a half, our patrons eagerly anticipated

the Hartford arrival for this generation’s

groundbreaking Broadway hit, Hamilton. That excitement

has subsided a bit (for now), and it gives us a chance to look back at a show that was, arguably, equally game-changing in its day: our current production, Rent.

Originally staged at The New York Theatre Workshop in 1994 (yes, a quarter of a century ago), Rent opened on Broadway in 1996, launched numerous tours, international productions, and two films. The 20th Anniversary Tour that you’re seeing today was launched two and a half years ago (which I suppose makes it a 23rd Anniversary Tour at this point). Regardless of the timeline, there’s no debate that the show revolutionized musical theatre when it premiered, and revisiting the show after a couple of decades reminds us of the power a classic show has to stand the test of time.

The ties between Rent and Hamilton are many. Rent was the first major production by a then very young Jeffrey Seller, who went on to produce a number of Tony-winning hits, including Hamilton. Hamilton’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, has often spoken about how he was influenced by Rent creator Jonathan Larson, who died unexpectedly the

morning of Rent’s first Off-Broadway preview. For a more in-depth article on the history of Rent, visit Bushnell.org/Rent.

Some of you may have seen the recent “live” production of Rent on FOX (I put live in quotes as an injured leading man resulted in the broadcast being mostly the taped dress rehearsal). Live musicals on television have made a comeback in recent years, to varying degrees of artistic and ratings success. I’m often asked if these TV productions diminish demand from our audiences – why buy a ticket and come into Hartford when you can stay home and watch the show free?

The answer is a resolute “no.” Shining the spotlight on musical theatre for vast television audiences has increased the appetite for seeing theatre live and in person. And the quality of seasoned stage performers generally brings shows to life in a more authentic way than pop stars do on the small screen. There is room for both, and I’m happy for any opportunity to engage audiences in this art form we so proudly present. Thank you for supporting us, and enjoy this truly live production of Rent.

    Sincerely

    David R. Fay
