MARCH BIRTHDAYS The Sacrament of Holy Communion:

Our church family shares the Sacrament of Holy Communion on the 1st Sunday of each month. If you know a shut-in who might like to have communion delivered to them at their home in the week following that Sunday, please contact the church office or a Deacon. The next Communion Sunday is March 2.

Sunday School Schedule for February

3/1 – Family Worship Sunday + Holy Communion.

Children stay in the sanctuary to share in worship with their church family; there is no separate Sunday school class. (The Nursery is available every Sunday for children from infancy through pre-school-age.)

3/9, 3/15, 3/22- Elementary students will be dismissed to class following the Children’s Moment.

3/9– Middle and High School Youth will be dismissed to class following the Children’s Moment.

Calling Occasional Gardeners!

As soon as the ground can be worked, it will be time to start implementing a new landscaping plan for the SPC property. We will have three areas of focus: west (Park Bank side), front (Church Street), and east (2nd Street). Are you interested and able to help? West: Bulbs and hosta are in place, but annuals need to be planned for and a schedule established for weeding, deadheading and summer watering. There’s even an opportunity to re-think that garden design entirely!Front: Gravel and/or new sod need to be placed over bare spots and several container gardens of perennials and grasses added. (We’ll put up our own this year, and can have some matching those on the Square in future years.)East: Probably the most change will occur on this side. We will extend the beds out from the church walls, provide for a one-foot wide strip of gravel between the walls and planting beds because of stucco leeching, amend the beds with good compost and soil, and plant some native shrubs. Next we’ll add some perennials and mulch, and some colorful annuals as spring and summer progress. The beds in front of the duplex just north of the church also will need our loving care.

Please sign up on the clipboard in the dining room to help with the task(s) in which you are most interested: (1) Planning Session (to be held at church at a date to be determined, no hard labor involved); (2) Bed Preparation (involving lots of digging and soil amending, perhaps over 2 days); (3) Planting; and (4) Mulching. There will also be a “What Would You Like To See” suggestion page so you can tell us what plants, flowers or even hardscape you would like to see done. You can also email Mary Beth Mathews at [email protected] or call her at 614-578-1221 to sign up or offer suggestions.

Thanks, and Think Spring!

A Note from Your Deacons

…in your ministry will you try to show the love…of Jesus Christ?” In February the Deacons expressed love to our church’s homebound members by delivering a special Valentine gift to them. We were so excited to be assisted in this outreach by our Sunday School kids! Their delightful handmade cards were included with each gift bag. (We especially thank Deacon and Sunday school teacher Diann Priest for coordinating this card project!)

The Deacons have also established a Care Bag Ministry. These bags include items selected to provide some comfort and care during times of lengthy treatment (such as chemotherapy) or extended recovery from serious surgery or illness. If you know of someone in this kind of situation with whom we might interact, please let a Deacon know.

Sincerely, Mike Ambrus, Ruth Cooper, Kathy Fickes, Molly Frye, Tim Gano, Debbie

Presbyterian Women

Current study:

Simon Peter; Flawed but Faithful Disciple by Adam Hamilton.

It has been said that God does not call the perfect; rather, God perfects the called. This is never more evident than in the life and ministry of Peter. Reviewing the gospel writers’ dramatic accounts of Peter’s discipleship can help us see our own discipleship in a more encouraging light.

Coming up: Bedrock or Stumbling Block; “I Will Not Deny You; From Cowardice to Courage.

Everyone is always welcome! You don’t have to come every week. Please join us any time you can.

The Birthday Offering is one of Presbyterian Women’s two annual mission offerings. The 2020 recipients have been selected and their individual missions are varied. In Russia, a Christian model for housing and community. In Augusta, GA, a second story renovation of GAP Ministry to expand and allow for meeting space, Saturday services and health assistance. The Liberty Community Church in Minneapolis houses the Northside Healing Space. This is the first and only African American led Presbyterian congregation in MN and they provide supportive housing, workforce development and healing from trauma and exploitation. Funding will also be provided to the Daycare and Pre-K programs serving local children and Tonto Apache Tribe children at the Community Presbyterian Child Learning Center in Payson, AZ

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

I want to thank each and every one of you for the kindness and love that was shown to me and my family on Pastor Appreciation Day. I was truly surprised and blessed by your kind and encouraging words, thoughtful cards, hugs, gifts, and amazing outpouring of love. While I felt especially appreciated that morning, I also thank you for the ways that you encourage me and share your love with me all year round. It is truly my joy to be your pastor.

Love,Pastor Todd (and Heather, Addy, and Isabelle)

Presbyterian Glue: Per Capita

Last month, we began looking at and understanding the connectedness of our denomination. We explored the idea of the presbytery and its many functions and duties within our denomination. This month, we are going to continue to look at what it means that the Presbyterian Church (USA) is a connected denomination by looking at one of the bonding agents that holds us all together: the Per Capita.

Let’s begin by exploring what the Per Capita is NOT. It is not some kind of club dues; paying Per Capita is not necessary for a person to be a member of a congregation, nor is it necessary for a congregation to be part of a presbytery. Per Capita is also not a tax; there is no Presbyterian IRS, no Per Capita returns to file, and no one is going to get in trouble for not paying their per capita. If it is not a due and it is not a tax, then what is it?

Per Capita is an opportunity. It is an opportunity for each member, congregation, and presbytery to participate in the work of the PC(USA) beyond the bounds of individual congregation. We are invited to participate by sharing the costs for the coordination and evaluation of mission work within our country and across the world, for the ecclesiastical, legislative, and judicial functions, which are crucial to our denominational structure, and for the on-going and essential work of the PC(USA) to spread the love and hope of Jesus Christ all throughout our world.

The Per Capita amount is different in each presbytery. In our presbytery, our Presbytery Operations Commission works each fall to create a budget for the presbytery for the coming year. They take that budget and the Per Capita requests of the Synod and the General Assembly and make a recommendation as to what Per Capita should be for the following year. That recommendation is taken to the presbytery to be voted on and approved. This usually happens in the November meeting of the Presbytery.

This year, there has been extensive debate about what our presbytery’s Per Capita should be. In fact, that debate was so intense that it was not able to be voted on in November and was returned to the Operations Commission for a new recommendation to be made at the February meeting, which was held here at SPC this past week. At that meeting, after much debate again, the presbytery voted to approve a $2 increase from the 2019 Per Capita.

That means that the Per Capita for 2020 is set at $37.75 per member. Churches are asked to pay that amount per member to the presbytery whether or not individual members contribute for their own membership, and SPC is committed to doing so. The money will be divided this year to have $25.55 for the Presbytery of Scioto Valley, $3.25 for the Synod of the Covenant, and $8.95 for the General Assembly. It is also worth noting that the Presbytery of Scioto Valley is committed to paying their portion to the Synod and the General Assembly whether or not they receive payments from individual churches.

I know that Per Capita is something that many of you have varied opinions on, but it is essential to the operation and connectedness of our denomination. I invite each of you to prayerfully consider making a contribution to the church, above and beyond your giving to the operation of our congregation, to cover your Per Capita costs. This is a way for you to participate in the life of not just SPC but of the entire Presbyterian Church(USA).

If you are interested in learning more about the Per Capita, you can go to the presbytery’s website www.psvonline.org and look under "Documents and Resources" for the Per Capita and Mission Giving Page.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Todd
