March Madness is almost upon us—in more ways than one. While many of us will be focusing on our brackets, there are other distractions to enjoy –right here in the Greater Miami Shores area. On March 12th come enjoy the Chamber’s first ever Pub Crawl- along NE 2nd Ave. Enjoy drinks and special treats at five of Downtown Miami Shore’s favorite eateries and Chamber members… On March 13th Barry University will host its annual Golf Tournament—participating is a great way to support your home team! Want to show off your bling in March? Buy your tickets to The Crystal Ball, the Miami Shores Annual Mayor’s Gala on March 14th, benefitting the Miami Shores Community Alliance. In the middle of

all of the madness, St. Rose students have set the goal of preparing more than 15,000 “Meals of Hope” for those in need at St. Martha’s Food Bank. Contact St. Rose of Lima School to find out how you can help. March is also the time when you want to make sure you secured your tickets for the upcoming Greater Miami Shores Golf Tournament in honor of Ted Kretzschmar, one of greater Miami Shores’ preeminent business leaders and a long-time Miami Shores resident. The Tournament is on April 24th, but early pricing ends March 15th! Whether its eating, dancing, golfing or giving back, hope to see you around our Greater Miami Shores businesses or organizations in March!

Ted’s both a successful businessleader and role model. Through-out his business’ development heinspired and nurtured new talent, encouraging their participationand ultimate succession of thebusiness.

As a Metro Dade County Sheriff’sDepartment Police Officer, Tedworked off duty at the Port ofMiami. When the Port’s manage-ment lamented one day, Ted toldthem he could take on the janito-rial work with a staff, which ledhim to his first entrepreneurialventure, Kleen Masters. As a re-sult, when an out of state com-pany needed a licensed securitycompany in Florida, Ted onceagain took advantage of an op-portunity founding 50 State Secu-rity.

50 State Security was one of thelargest private security guardcompanies in South Florida. Thebusiness provided security offi-cers and security technology forboth commercial and residentialclients. It sold in 2016 and Ted tri-umphantly retired.

Throughout the years, 50 Stategrew as a result of referrals, thevery best marketing method. Hiscommitment to the Security Com-munity was establishing the “Po-lice Officer of the Month”

Recognition with awards bothmonthly and annually. His leader-ship extended into Miami Shores’community, bringing his strategicthinking to many boards includingBarry University’s Athletic Board,Doctors Charter School Board ofDirectors and Miami Shores Vil-lage Advisory Board of MiamiShores Country Club, Presidentof Florida Youth Soccer Associa-tion, Lifetime member of JuniorChamber of Commerce, Presi-dent of Miami Jaycees.

His love of sports and his childrenbrought him to the Miami ShoresRecreation’s Playing fields coach-ing soccer, an emerging U.S.sport at the time. Ted traveledwith Soccer teams to Tourna-ments in Mexico, Washington DC,Toronto Canada, Connecticut andNew Orleans. Many times, heanonymously sponsored playersso they were able to travel withtheir teams. Plus, a snippet ofSports Trivia, Ted founded TAG-WOL (Thursday Afternoon GolfWay of Life), an amicable groupof 48 + golfers enjoying 30 yearsof the great outdoors with theirown brand of golfing.

A philanthropist, Ted has alwaysshared his success within theCommunity, sponsoring and sup-porting Barry University’s annual golf tournament, and the

Founders Red, White and BlackBall and sponsored many studentscholarships to Johnson & Wales University and was the title spon-sor of Doctors Charter School’sannual golf tournament for manyyears.

50 State and Ted were a long-time, Greater Miami ShoresChamber of Commerce member, actively supporting, participatingand initiating programs, eventsand community involvement.

Join the community as the Cham-ber honors Ted’s accomplish-ments and philanthropy, FridayApril 24th, at the Annual GolfTournament, Miami Shores Coun-try Club and the Gala dinner thatevening.

On December 15, 2019, the Heidi Hewes Chapter of the Woman’s Cancer Association of the University of Miami hosted its 28th annual Home for the Holidays Walk and Tour of Homes in Miami Shores. Connie has baked thousands of cookies. A 1.5 inch incision unlocked the sweetest years of her life.

Connie Morgan’s favorite pastime was baking with her granddaughter. Afflicted by mitral valve prolapse, the constant fatigue and labored breathing gradually made it impossible for Connie to enjoy the activities she loved. Growing despondent, Connie knew something had to change. After a quick

consultation, she found out the answer was a minimally invasive transcatheter mitral valve replacement performed by HCA East Florida’s leading cardiac team. With this second chance at life, Connie’s time in the kitchen with her granddaughter felt sweeter than ever.

Church School (Mspc) Is so proud of our students for raising funds to fight cancer! During our annual St. Jude Bike-A-Thon, every dollar raised went right to St. Jude. With the help of our amazing teachers, students soared with our mid year testing results. We are soaring not only academically, but also in our community. Alongside the church, we provided canned food for the needy during our “Souper Bowl of Caring” (during the Super Bowl). In addition, our students helped create wooden toys and soft dolls for others. Our signature “Night Under The Stars” event is coming up. A night of food, festivities, silent auction, dancing, libations and fun. Join us for this great evening on March 20th.For more information about events or our wonderful school, dedicated, hardworking and talented staff, please contact us or visit our website at http://www.mspcs.net/Miami Shores Community Church School (MSCCS) This month our kindergarten students participated in our annual Sweetheart Spelling Bee on February 14, 2020. It was one to remember, as the students stepped up to the challenge. Family and friends were very impressed with how well the students did and how much they learned in the process. In preparation for the next school year, MSCCS is proud to announce that we are now accepting VPK for the 2020-2021 school year. Space is limited so please reserve your seat by stopping by the school with your child’s VPK certificate. We are also opening enrollment to the public for our elementary program as well. MSCCS will be offering multi-age classrooms for the 2020-2021 school year. In doing so we can cater to the individual child instead of the individual grade. It allows for more individualized instruction. If you would like more information about our program, please stop by or contact us at 305-757-5866. You can also visit us on Facebook or at www.msccs.org.St. Rose of Lima Catholic School students continue to reach new heights in many ways! Through a meditative process, Mary Larsen layers disparate elements to create an ephemeral atmosphere of fragmentation and beauty, an alternate world that is at once disorienting yet somehow at peace.

Tina Salvesen’s work is about disintegra-tion and renewal in a multi-dimensional world that vibrates, forms, dissolves and

reforms around us. The books become sculptural objects and she uses only

forms and nature indigenous to Florida.
