No estaremos absolutamente seguros. ¡Decide! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Today’s Readings First Reading — Joshua challenges the Israelites to serve either the Lord or other gods. They choose the Lord (Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b). Psalm — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). Second Reading — Paul reflects on how husbands and wives should reverence and love each other (Ephesians 5:21-32). Gospel — Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life (John 6:60-69). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. Decisions There is an axiom that states, “Not to decide is to decide.” This saying was popular in the turbulent times of the Vietnam War. It urged us not to allow others to answer the moral questions raised by our nation’s involvement in that terrible conflict, but to decide for ourselves. Making such choices is never easy. Avoiding them is common. Jesus, for his part, was not only a gallant risk-taker, but a clear decision-maker. As he pursued the mission to which the Father called him, he continually decided for us and for the Father. He worked hard to lay out a scenario that would enable others to make similar choices. Never did he make decisions for others or force others into decisions, even decisions that had eternal ramifications. Jesus is inviting us to make such decisions today. We won’t be absolutely sure. What is sure, however, is the command that issues from God’s word: Take the risk. Decide! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT FOCO VOLUNTARIO

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight is on Diana Bumgardner Cook, who has been heading up the very successful Capital Campaign for the last four years. That Campaign has recently surpassed the $3M mark in donations. Although that Campaign has concluded, Diana continues her volunteer work devoted to reducing the remaining outstanding debts for St. Mary Parish. Diana and her family are long-time Escondido residents. She has two children - Jay and Julie – and two grandchildren. Diana worked at Palomar Hospital and at least one other medical group. She attended St. Mary School, and graduated from Escondido High School. Diana has taken several pilgrimages to Europe and to the Holy Land. She loves to travel, is an avid reader, and loves ETWN and other Catholic outlets. She is also a Notre Dame fan, and attends at least one Notre Dame game each year. Diana is truly deserving of our many “thank you’s” as an active, long-term volunteer at St. Mary Parish! We are very grateful for her continued help and presence at St. Mary Parish, and couldn't have had such a successful Campaign without her.

Beginning Experience

Beginning Experience of San Diego will be holding a one-day workshop this Saturday called Coping with Life Alone in the Beginning. This is a day for men and women who are dealing with a loss of a marriage through death, divorce or separation. It is a day guided with reflection and sharing to encourage and help each participant in his or her own journey of healing. The date of this workshop is August 28th at St. Mary Parish, Escondido. We are an International ministry and listed on the Diocese website for more information about our organization. Information/Sign-up with Vicki Fach by calling (858) 748-2273 or by email at [email protected] This workshop will be presented in English only.

Month of the Immaculate Heart The Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It is a dogma of the Catholic faith that Mary is the Immaculate Conception; that is, in preparation for the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Holy Trinity in her womb, she was conceived without the corruption of sin through the foreseen and infinite merits of her Son, Jesus Christ. Over the centuries, as saints and theologians reflected on how Mary pondered and treasured the sacred events from the life of Christ in her holy heart, as attested in Scripture, her pure heart was recognized as something to be imitated. Devotion to Our Lady’s purity of heart began to flower—so much so that in the 17th century, St. John Eudes promoted it alongside the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The devotion rose to a new level after the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima, when Mary revealed an image of her Immaculate Heart to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco.

to all of you who participated in the recent St. Mary Capital Campaign! Together, we have paid off all but $1,866,376 of our debt for the Parish Center. It is through generous people like you that make St. Mary Parish the great Catholic community that it is!!

Although the three-year Campaign has concluded, we still have more debt to pay off. Many parishioners donate to this debt reduction, but we still need your help. The faster that we pay off this debt, the more money that we can save and apply it for other improvement projects at our Parish.

Please use the Gray “Parish Center/ Debt Reduction” envelopes with your cash or check donations. Even easier, you can donate online from our www.stmaryp.org website, and designate it as a recurring donation so that you don’t have to enter your donations after the first entry.

Thank you, again! May God reward you for your sacrifice and generosity with His blessings.

CULTURE OF LIFE AND PRO-LIFE MINISTRY

40 Days for Life 40 Days for Life is an internationally coordinated 40-day campaign that aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses. This year the Fall Campaign will run from September 22nd through October 31st and through the leadership of Ed and Alma Reyes. St. Mary Parish will have the opportunity to pray at the local Planned Parenthood from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday thru Saturday. We invite everyone to join us in peaceful prayer, fasting, and educational opportunities so that we can move hearts and educate our community on the dignity of all life. Please prayerfully consider making a commitment. The Pro-Life Ministries will be reaching out to the Parish; if you have questions, please email [email protected] (Alma and Ed Reyes) or call 760-580-9563 (Mercedes Aguilar) or 760-637-4638 (Rosa Ortiz). Every year in the United States 1.2 million unborn lives are ended tragically. We want to let mothers and fathers know that they have support in our parish community…with the “one shared language of prayer…we can save lives where we live.” (40 Days for Life)

ADORATION

We Have a Gift Here at St. Mary “I adore You, Lord and Creator hidden in the Blessed Sacrament of Adoration. Lord, you alone have spread so much beauty over the earth, it tells me of Your beauty.... even though these beautiful things are but a faint reflection of you and your incomprehensible beauty. Even though you have hidden yourself and concealed your beauty in this piece of bread, my eye, enlightened by faith, reaches you and recognizes its Creator. My heart is completely immersed in prayer of adoration. Here in adoration Lord, to converse with you is the delight of my heart. You alone unite yourself to me intimately. As I offer up to you my poor heart in this tabernacle, adoring you and your true Divine presence Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, there is no obstacle in my adoration of you. Thank you for inviting me!” Jesus invites all of us daily to spend time with Him. Won't you consider spending an hour of your time in His presence?? He's waiting for you. He's calling you. Solo tú únete a mí íntimamente.

Fr. Félière Louis CS., Associate Pastor of St. Mary Parish - Escondido Fr. Félière was born in Petit-Goâve - Haiti, in 1977, of a very Catholic couple whose names are: Fabien Louis and Brinelia Pierre-Louis – deceased - who taught him the way of faith. Fr. Félière is the fifth of six children of whom two have already passed away. Fr. Félière’s father, being a sacristan of the Catholic Church, always made the education of his children a religious education. For this reason, all the primary education of Fr. Félière was in Catholic schools where the catechism for the sacraments of Christian initiation was a priority. In 2004, Fr. Félière entered the seminary of the missionaries of Saint Charles Borromeo - Scalabrinians in Haiti, where he began his formative process in view of the priesthood. For five years, he did his philosophical studies in the major seminary in Haiti, then his postulancy and novitiate. After that, he was sent to Bogotá - Colombia for eight years, where he completed an Undergraduate Degree in Theology and a Master's Degree in Theology from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana - Colombia. Fr. Félière was ordained in 2017 in Haiti. After his ordination he was assigned as a Scalabrinian to the Diocese of San Diego California, specifically as associate Pastor of the Parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Chula Vista, where he served for three years. Later, he was sent as vicar to the Parish of St. Charles Borromeo Chicago - Illinois, and was there for almost a year. Now, Fr. Félière is once again in the Diocese of San Diego, serving as Associate Pastor of St. Mary Parish - Escondido, in order to incardinate himself in the Diocese. Please give Fr. Félière a warm welcome to St. Mary the next time you see him!
