Pastor’s Message: Letter From Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone: Dear Father Eugene, Many thanks to you, Fr. Bill, and all your parishioners for a very enjoyable visit there at Epiphany Parish last week-end. The Mass with the school community and visits to the classes afterwards and the time with the faculty and staff was a great way to start the weekend. I was so pleased with the family spirit that pervades the school community and, indeed, the entire parish. The commitment of the faculty and staff to the best interests of the children was very clear. It was a pleasure to mingle with the parishioners at the reception on Saturday evening, was well as to meet with the parish leaders Sunday afternoon. It really helped me to get to know Epiphany Parish much better. You have a rich history and vibrant parish life, and I was happy to know of the very many ministries and activities at the par-ish, both those that are well established and those that are newly developing (or being renewed, such as the youth and young adult ministries. You are all well aware of the challenges that lie ahead, and I am confident that the wisdom and vision you all collectively bring together will help you to address them so that you may continue forward that great legacy you have inherited. Thank you again for a wonderful visit. May the good Lord continue to bless you all throughout this season of Lent, and grant you all much peace and joy as we ap-proach the celebration of His triumph over death Easter. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Salvatore J. Cordileone

Gospel: John 12: 20-23 Here Jesus compares his life and ours with a grain of wheat. If the grain falls into the earth and dies, it then rises as a stalk of wheat that gives life by feeding others. Like the grain of wheat, we must be willing to lose our lives in order to gain eternal life. Jesus knows that the hour of his death when he will be lifted up on the cross is coming soon. But he also knows that when he is lifted up, he will draw everyone, Jews and Greeks and all the world's people, to himself. 1.) How do you think Jesus draws people to himself? How can you help others whose words or actions say "We should like to see Jesus"?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As we approach Holy Week, the crea-tive juices of the ancient church of Jeru-salem begin to shape our journey. In old Jerusalem at this season of the year, the attempt was made to recall the events leading up to Christ’s passion. Those at-tempts were based not only on time, with celebrations of events as close to the day and hour as possible, but also on people’s best guesses as to the actual place of these events. Vast numbers of pilgrims flooded the city during the forty days of Lent, many of them catechu-mens in their last stages of preparation for initiation. The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria wrote a delightfully detailed diary of her experience of this lively and aerobic liturgy, which involved hearty singing, strong preaching, and nimble processions across vast and arduous ter-rain. Much of this energy was lost over the centuries, with the procession of palms a noteworthy exception. Northern climates had to reinterpret this Jerusa-lem liturgy, using forsythia, willow, or olive branches, but to this day the entry into Holy Week by a community on the move accompanied by joyful song heark-ens back to a venerable tradition. Egeria’s letters were rediscovered a little more than a hundred years ago, but they reveal a pattern of prayer: full, con-scious, active participation, to which we have a right and a duty.—Rev.
