THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 23, 2014

From the Desk of Fr. Schilli . . . . . . . . One of the origins of the season of Lent in the early Church is the time set aside by each local community for the final preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation for Adults. After a period of catechesis in the faith which could last anywhere from one to three years, the catechumens enter the season of Lent. On the third, fourth and fifth Sundays of Lent, rituals called the Scrutinies can be celebrated for the unbaptized in preparation for the Easter Vigil. The Readings for these Sunday in Cycle A (which happens to be the current cycle of reading we are using) are arranged to concentrate on certain issues of faith. Today we read bout Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well of Jacob. Their conversation on faith employs the image of faith as a wellspring of water which give life and meaning to our earthly existence. The women discovers in Jesus, not just a miracle-worker or a prophet who speaks eloquently, but a Savior who rescues her life from sin and evil. The Church invites all of us to join those preparing for the Easter sacraments during these next three weeks to reflect upon the gift of faith in our lives so that at Easter we might be fully prepared to renew the vows of our own baptism. And they said it couldn’t be done!!!! A new record! On Friday March 14 we broke our previous record of 2,416 meals served in a single evening and set the bar very high moving forward. We sold 2,560 meals! What can be said other than – Congratulations! Every 1.4 seconds we served a meal. Each meal requires the work of more than 150 people on sight in addition to those who work each Monday through Thursday in preparation for various parts of that meal and in addition to the many desserts that were baked and donated. Everyone is familiar with the saying, “It takes a village.” When it comes to the Fish Fry at Most Sacred Heart, it takes a parish! As a part of Most Sacred Heart Parish, what will you contribute to the cause during these remaining weeks of Lent? We need you more than ever now! Please remember our Lenten spiritual opportunities: Daily Mass at both 7 am and 8 am, Mondays through Fridays, Mass & devotions on Tuesday evenings 7 pm, Stations of the Cross on Wednesdays 7 pm followed by the opportunity for the Sacrament of Penance and Fridays at 2:30 pm. Confessions on Saturday afternoons from 4:00 - 4:45 pm. Blessed Lent, Father Rick Schilli

+ ARCHDIOCESAN LENTEN REGULATIONS+ The Pope and the American Bishops have outlined obligatory fast and abstinence as follows: + Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (April 18) are days of abstinence for all Catholics over the age of 14. These two days, fast as well as abstinence is also obligatory for those from the ages of 18 to 59. + Abstinence means abstinence from meat. Fast means one full meal a day, with two smaller meals and nothing between meals (liquids are permitted.) No Catholic will lightly excuse himself or herself from this obligation. + All other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Here again Catholics will not hold them-selves lightly excused, but if there is a serious health problem, this obligation would not apply. +WE SHOULD STRIVE TO MAKE ALL THE DAYS +

From the desk of Fr. Leo….

As you see in this week’s bulletin, the parish is almost at $100,000 in the RED as needed for our parish budget. Priests do not like to talk money, but I think we have to begin the discussion about parish finances. Yes…the weather has been bad most weekends since the turn of the New Year and many people did not come to church because of the inclement weather or the forecasted weather report. Some of you have “caught up” with your weekly offering/envelopes but most have not. Not here, No give! I wish we could tell this Ameren & Laclede Gas and other suppliers - but we still have to keep the lights and heat going regardless if 34 people or 340 people come to Mass. [May I make a push here for ELECTRONIC GIVING? We can set it up quickly to have an amount taken electronically from your bank or credit union account & save you (and us) the trouble of writing & processing a check or putting cash into an envelope. I would be glad to assist you with this.]

Do you know we already have doled out almost $16,000 for snow removal and chemicals this season…and our budget was only $6,000 for these services. Again…what has to be done has to be done whether 34 or 340 attend Mass. Because these services must be paid, we have not purchased needed supplies for school and PSR. Just ask the principals or school boards of the full-time school or PSR & they will tell you what has been approved for purchase lately…almost nothing.

I know this is not a pleasant subject….....but someone has to begin the discussion. $100,000 behind in our needed parish budget & growing. That trend has to stop. $10,000 more than expected owed for snow removal. Which had to be paid!

Yes, we are having record-breaking fish fries. Great! Yes, we had a fantastic Auction this year. Great! Fall Festival turns a profit but does not bring in the funds it used to in prior years. All of that can be gone quickly with one more snowfall or more potholes around the parking lot.

It is our 125th Anniversary Year. Can I be so bold as to ask each family to give (or pledge to give by the end of this year) $125 to help with expenses and “right this ship”?

I WILL MAKE AND GIVE THE FIRST $125!

Will anyone join me and help????
