Fr.Carl’sCorner In a recent essay in the New York Times (February, 2020) Margaret Renkl writes of needing a break from the news business one afternoon and she goes for a walk in the woods near her home in Nashville. Along the way, she saw a tree with broken limbs and rot in the wood from the heavy rains of the year’s unusually wet winter. About seven feet up the trunk was a knothole. The crevice was large enough to provide shelter from the wind and rain for all kinds of creatures. But what caught her attention was a cluster of tiny seedlings that were colored the bright new green of springtime. These tiny plants were growing in the loam inside the knothole. The hole made by decay in a tree far above the ground, had become a cold frame, a natural green house that lets in light and keeps out frost. Life in death in life! We are in an unusual time right now, life as we know it turned inside-out . And we are not really sure for how long. No Holy Week or Easter services… so sad and so unheard of for me and many others in this lifetime. Folks have their businesses, family life, work routines and selfcare all turned on its side! I share my reflection on the above essay for this reason. In times

like these, it makes sense to seek daily reasond for praise rather than daily reminders of lack. So here is something to think about during our time of social distancing. Find as many ordinary miracles that this time of quiet and solitude can put forth. Go outdoors for a walk and look for signs of resurrection as these early springtime days can allow. Tiny beautiful things are bursting forth in the darkest of places, in the smallest nooks and deepest cracks of our hidden world. During these uncertain days, keep looking every single day. God’s presence and love are there to embrace God’s grace despite the fear, isolation, disappointment and uncertainty that we are facing. Miracles are all around us… even if Easter can’t be celebrated in church, signs of resurrection fill our lives!!! Allow this time to challenge us to be attentive and determined to find them. I am discouraged about the fact that the church has to be locked for now. However, we are ringing our bells at the Cardinal’s request each day at 9:00 a.m., noon, and 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. as a reminder to all to stop and pray for those who have the virus or are also sick, health care workers and others who are attending to the sick, first responders and essential workers, people of all nations and their leaders, and at the end of our day, at 9:00 p.m., to remember all who have died during the day. Let us all keep praying!! With you a Christian. For you a priest.

SpiritualLife&WorshipSt. Giles Lenten Almsgiving

This Lent, a portion of our Sunday collections will go to the following two organizations:

ANNUNCIATION HOUSE

www.annunciationhouse.org Annunciation House is a volunteer organization that offers hospitality to migrants, immigrants, and refugees in the border region of El Paso, Texas. Since its founding in 1978, it has provided shelter, clothing, food and other basic necessities for hundreds of thousands of migrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America. It also participates in advocacy and education around immigration issues and seeks to be a voice for justice and compassion, especially on behalf of the most marginalized of our society. Rooted in Catholic social justice teaching, the volunteers of Annunciation House live simply and in community, in the same houses as the guests they serve. CATHOLIC EXTENSION AND LA POSADA PROVIDENCIA

www.catholicextension.org Sister Zita Telkamp is director of La Posada Providencia in San Benito, Texas. The center provides emergency shelter for men,

women and children fleeing from political oppression, violence and poverty and seeking asylum in the United States. It opened in 1989 and now has five full-time employees and 20 volunteers who serve 400 immigrants annually. They offer housing, food, English classes and transportation. “We teach life skills,” said Sister Telkamp of the Congregation of Divine Providence. “We don’t preach the Gospel, but we live it by what we do.” The shelter operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and has served immigrants from nearly 80 countries. Catholic Extension works in solidarity with La Posada Providencia and many other organizations to provide assistance to the most needy.

Lent at St. Giles The Fifth Sunday of Lent: The Raising of Lazarus

The death of a loved one touches us at a level far deeper than any other human experience. It is so strong that it even affects God. Psalm 16 says: “Precious in the eyes of the Lord God is the death of one of his faithful.” It is no surprise then, that Jesus is moved to tears as he stands at Lazarus' tomb. In his stirring prayer, he expresses his belief in the loving Providence of God loud enough for all to hear.

In the beginning of this encounter, Jesus asks Martha and Mary if they believe in him. At the conclusion, he expresses his own belief so that the crowds may hear and believe.

What do you need, especially in times of loss and sorrow, to believe in Jesus and see the glory of God shine forth?

Reflection Questions In this time of uncertainty and isolation, we can focus on our fear—or we can fix our minds on the message we hear in the Gospel. Talk with your family around the dinner

table or call a friend and have a conversation!

In what way are we bound like Lazarus?

How has Jesus called us to new life?

How are we called to bring new life to others?

Lenten Opportunity

Easter Sunrise Shoeboxes

In light of our current circumstances, we request families to make shoeboxes at home as a Lenten project and to hold them

until we are able to open the church.

We will collect all boxes at that time and distribute them to Franciscan Outreach

and other outreach organizations that are in need for those they serve.

Thank you!

Fill a shoebox or a comparable-size container (you provide the container) with a variety of the following suggested items:

Tube Socks Hotel Size Soap and Shampoo Kleenex (small packages) Brush and/or Comb Plastic rain poncho Deodorant Wash/Face Cloth Disposable razor Toothbrush/Toothpaste Shaving gel/cream Baby Powder Hand Lotion Small towel Other small items Gift Card from McDonald’s, Burger King, etc.

(not to exceed $10.00)

Please be sure to include these two items: Word Search or Crossword Puzzle Book

with Pen or Pencil, Plastic Easter Egg filled with candy

When your shoebox is filled, you can decorate it (if you choose to do so), put a rubber band around it and mark the box either “Man” or “Woman”. Place your filled container on the benches in the Gathering Space in Church or drop it off at the Parish Center. Then during Holy Week all the Easter Sunrise Shoeboxes will be delivered to the various locations so that they can be distributed on Easter.

Thank you for caring and participating!!
