WelcomeTo All TechConnect ‘18 Attendees:
On behalf on the TechConnect ‘18 event staff, we wish you a productive and informative event. It takes a lot of effort to put on an event like this, and it would not be possible without volunteers from the Computer Science Advisory Board, Engineering Career Services, the College of Engineering, the College of Business, UNLV Career Services, UNLV Student Union Special Events Services, the UNLV Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and others in the community. We would also like to thank all of our panelists as well as our Prize Sponsors, Zappos and Terbine. Zappos provided the Amazon gift cards, Ninten-do Switch, and the 3-D Printer. Terbine is providing lunch with astronaut Ken Ham for five lucky students and two top-of-the-line backpacks.
Most of all, we thank our Industry Partners who make this event possible. Each of them not only allow us to host this event which provides an opportunity for stu-dents to find internships and jobs, but they also help with contributions toward endowing the annual Computer Science Scholarships we are able to award.
We firmly believe this event benefits every type of participant: the students who are presented with job search information and job opportunities, the sponsors who become aware of great talent, and the immense satisfaction the event staff feel from contributing to these positive outcomes.
Thank you!

Oscar PereiraEngineer 1, Mechanical, Fire & Electrical GroupMission Support and Test Services LLC (MSTS)
I was raised in a small North East Texas town called Lufkin. In 2008, promptly after graduating high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps and served for 5 years in Twenty-nine Palms California, conducting deployments to Afghanistan and South East Asia. Upon completing my enlistment I decided to move to Las Vegas and enroll in University of Nevada Las Vegas’ (UNLV) mechanical engineering program, in Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering. I began my journey as a full-time student in fall semester, 2013. During my first 3 years as a student I worked as a computer sales associate/technology education agent for best buy/geek squad, respectively.
When I began my sophomore year, I learned that having an internship and passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, would be extremely important to make me a more valuable and competitive candidate for work after graduation. I studied for the FE for months. I took and passed the FE on summer 2017. With the assistance of UNLV’s Engineering Career Services Coordinator, Marian Mason and National Security Technologies’ (NSTec) Von Sudderth, I applied and was awarded an internship with NSTec, now known as Mission Support and Test Services (MSTS). I officially became an NSTec intern in May, 2016. About a year and a half worth of new and exciting experiences as an intern in NSTec, a contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy, I had learned a great amount of information, giving me a much clearer idea of what was like to be an actual engineer.
I graduated in Fall Semester 2017, and was fortunate enough to be promoted from an intern to a full time Engineer I, working for MSTS.
Finally, and with an official engineering career started, the real training had just begun. I am currently in a progressive Engineering in Training Program and am actively involved in many new and exciting projects all throughout the Nevada National Security Site, in Mercury NV. I now have the opportunity to work alongside and learn from many experienced individuals, including company executives, national laboratory scientist and engineers of all fields.
