Jet Ski Club Gives Reason To Smile.

I saw a post on a Facebook Page of Helping Kids in 2013. It was from 2 brothers aged 5 and 6 from Dunalley who lost everything in the recent fires. All they asked for was a cricket bat or an outside toy. There was some other requests like a 15 year old wanting a Motor Bike and a few others but this one pulled at my heart string… A Cricket Bat seemed so minor…They had lost all there new Christmas Toys and their School holidays weren't going to be much fun! So I came up with an idea… I posted on Our Facebook page asking if anyone else wanted to contribute a toy… Donations flooded in to Maynes

Marine and Regs office soon looked like Kmarts toy Isle!

Thankyou Andrew Doran, Donna Evans, Kirrilee Turner, Reg Turner, Stephen Price,

Carolyn Pillans, Trevor Pillans, Paul Oakley, Allison Oakley and Myself.... A massive thankyou to Pete Jones and Marise Heron who organised 2 brand new bikes donated by Kmart Newtown - how ever the boys mum managed to save there bikes (only 2

items saved) so we can donate them to another family....

I was able to meet with the Family and put

the smiles back on Liam and Tobys Face..

STRAHAN/CORINNA: March Long Weekend 8/9/10 March 2013 Full Ride Briefing in back of this Newsletter

SEAFEST at Triabunna: Saturday March 23rd 2013 Seafest is a two day festival being held in Triabunna on Tasmania’s East Coast. The festival will

launch on Friday 22nd March 2013 with Schools Day followed by a community celebration on

Friday evening. The festival will continue on Saturday 23rd March and everyone is invited to join

in the fun. The inaugural Seafest festival was held in Triabunna in November 2011. The festival

attracted big crowds who enjoyed near perfect weather and a huge variety of things to see and

do. The theme of the festival is living and learning on the east coast. There is so much to discover

about our unique marine environment and so much to celebrate in our coastal lifestyle. Festival

goers at Seafest can expect to once again enjoy a great selection of east coast food and wine, live

music, fascinating marine and coastal exhibitions, market stalls and fun activities such as jet ski

racing and rides, kayaking, sailing and fishing.

The Club will do rides for the Public to raise money and there will also be an optional RACE for

people to participate in. It will start at Triabunna and head over to Maria in the passage and

return. Times will be confirmed closer to the events. Because there is an actual race involved

riders competing will need to pay the $50 insurance fee to AJSBC.

YOU MUST WEAR A HELMET TO RACE! (NO EXCEPTIONS)

Kylie is meeting with the Seafest Committee this Friday so times and more details will be provided

via the Facebook page and email but we expect to be there most of the day on Saturday.

BRUNY ISLAND RIDE REVIEW 2nd February 2013

NUMBER OF SKI’S = 22 SUPPORT BOATS = 3

The weekend started Friday Night with people staying at Kylies Shack and People staying in an Accommodation

House near the Gordon Boat Ramp. Jhi was one of these people staying at Gordon, a decision he would later

regret when falling down the stairs in the middle of the night and breaking his Wrist. (He actually

circumnavigated Bruny with the broke wrist and done an amazing job!)

Wow… Could we have picked a better day weather wise. It was amazing. We headed south down around

Partridge Island first and there was a small lazy swell on. The rollers were well spaced apart and proved no

drama...

We spent time enjoying the cliffs at the lighthouse while the rest of the group caught up. We had a couple of

issues with Fuel containers falling off but nothing that wasn't easily fixed.

We continued on to the Friars and spent over half an hour there admiring the Seals and exploring this huge drive

through cave and we lined the skis up and took photos.

We headed up the East side of Bruny only to stop soon after as their were some nice waves - Commence

Wave Jumping, but not without dramas—Andrew Woodcock beached his ski and found the Hull to have water

in it from a broken engine mount and Kylie broke her nose when she face planted the handle bars doing an

awesome jump that no one caught on camera…. With Dave (The Maynes Marine Mechanic) on the job of

Andrews Ski we were at this beach for 45 minutes.

We headed off again with Andrews ski rideable but gently and slowly… We went into Adventure Bay and saw a

massive pod of dolphins very keen to play—We told them to go away and stay 300m from us but they wouldn't

listen! (Damn Dolphins!!) We went to the far end of the beach to refuel and rest again and have lunch.

We headed off again and our lead rider went around the point and straight across to Cape Raoul taking another

11 followers with him. Concerned on lookers sat there waiting for them to realize and return, we must have

called them 20 times on the marine radio (which proved ineffective in the ski’s glove box). We called the Hobart

Marine Radio who put a call out to all vessels in that area to tell the ski’s they have gone the wrong way and

return. Dale called eventually and said they were at shipsterns and heading back. We eventually located all riders

and made our way back to the ramp. It was almost 6pm! It was a LONG day. We finished off with a BBQ at

Kylies Shack.

The club has learnt a lot and put policies into place to ensure we maintain the planned course.. These include—

The lead rider will be speed limited depending on conditions, but these are tours and the speed will an average

of 60—70ks

The club to purchase a GPS for the Lead Rider.

Ride Briefing will include a Marine Map with Compass Bearings

2 Sweep riders

Only 3 yellow vests—1 on Lead and 2 for Sweeps

No riding close to cliff

Riders are only to fiddle with go pros and other video cameras at rest stops—

as this spreads the group out to much

Lead rider must stop frequently and look behind them frequently between

stops

Only 1 Person in Charge making decisions.

Keep the Group Tight

Possibly laminate nautical maps/charts on the larger rides

FROM PETER at MAST:

I had some real issues at New Norfolk on Sunday 17th Feb with PWC

and Boats doing the wrong things, it was really disappointing. Also reports of

some PWC at Red Ochre at Dodges doing the wrong thing as well.

I understand that these were probably not club members but its worth

remembering that you are always being watched!

MAST has often written infringement notices with photo based evidence or

written statements.

WHO HAS BEEN TOWED

THIS MONTH??? Andrew Woodcock broke an Engine Mount half

way around Bruny and after continuing a fair

way was towed in the end…

Why are there no photos???

Geordie - Your ski will go better if

you put oil in it!

Conditions were not favourable! It didn't help when boats kept entering our course and the mona boat wake

proved challenging in the already tough conditions. Thankyou to participants for there support and thankyou to

time keepers, photographers, flag wavers and support crew and fans! It was a great day! :-)

Ride Briefing – Macquarie Harbour and Gordon River

Saturday March 9th 2013 Arrival @ boat ramp at Strahan: 8:00 am Boat ramp briefing: 8:30am Start time: 9:00 am

Experience level: Intermediate experience would be considered a minimum… NO PASSENGERS

Notes:

Extra fuel will be required as this ride is a distance of at least 150km, much like Bruny Island. Riders will be ex-

pected to strap jerry cans to their ski as there is no opportunity to purchase fuel while on this ride. If any mem-

ber would like some assistance with securing their containers @ the meeting point, please approach a committee

member who'll be happy to help with advice on the best ways to secure them to your ski.

Bring along a lunch & water bottle/drink there will not be any BBQ supplied for this ride. .

Departure from boat ramp @ 9:00 am. Route taken will depend solely on wind direction. I.e. we will ride with

the wind, not against it for a more enjoyable ride for all. The preferred route will be to ride down the eastern

side of Macquarie Harbour, where we will arrive @ Sarah Island. We'll spend 20 min for a break and give an op-

portunity to those adventurous enough to check out the island either by water or by foot.

From Sarah Island the main group will continue together to the mouth of the Gordon River where we will then

split into 2 groups.

1st group will head along the Gordon River.

Riders heading to this location will need to ensure they stick to the 5 knot speed limit for the entire length of the

river. You will also need to have Parks and Wildlife passes, which will need to be arranged by yourselves and paid

for accordingly prior to departure.

2nd group Macquarie Harbour Tour. We will head around to the Pillingers. Pillinger is an abandoned port

and town site in Kelly Basin, on the south eastern side of Macquarie Harbour where there will be an opportunity

to stop and have a look around.

Both parties will need to reconvene at the mouth of the Gordon River no later than 13:00 (1pm). This will allow

sufficient time to return safely back to Strahan boat ramp with enough time for all riders to refuel at Strahan and

be waiting at the Pieman ferry (108km away from Strahan) by 17:00 (5pm).

including NOT travelling directly behind another ski (in case it stops quickly), safe separation distances between

skis, and avoiding sudden course changes, especially if others are behind you.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

YOU MUST REFUEL AT STRAHAN… THERE IS NO FUEL AT CORINNA

The Fatman barge can only take 1 car & ski per trip & last barge crossing is at 19:00 (7pm) so if you're not there

you miss the ferry trip & it's a LONG drive by road around. Last meals at Corinna need to be ordered by 19:45

(7:45pm). Each crossing takes 7 minutes.

As these are both long ride all riders would be expected to feel confident riding in weather conditions & swells,

as Macquarie Harbour can be notorious for wind picking up without notice.

All riders will be supplied with an orange hi-viz vest as this will make it easier to be seen by all on the water. Ride

leaders & sweepers will wear a yellow Hi-viz vest as a contrast for all riders to be visually aware of who to fol-

low. Members coming to Strahan from Hobart, Launceston or the North West Coast will not get food in Stra-

han after 8pm as all the food places close by then. Also there are no supermarkets or food stops along the way

opened after 6pm. We suggest you get food before you leave major towns if you are going to be late arriving.

You will not have Mobile phone contact in Strahan or other regional areas if you are not with Telstra as this is

the only company that works in Strahan. However even Telstra is Patchy.

Page 7: MARCH Jet Ski Club Gives Reason To Smile. 2013pwctas.files.wordpress.com/2013/05/newsletter-march-2013-pdf.pdfAt 9.30 we will have up to 4 rounds of short course racing. This will

Gordon River/ Macquarie Harbour Cont.….

All riders are asked to keep behind the leader rider @ all times. There will also be a sweeper rider who will

remain @ the rear of the group to ensure everyone is accounted for.

The lead rider will stop at various locations to allow all riders to regroup.

The leader rider and sweeper will be in radio contacted at all times and will be carrying the required safety gear

with them.

Depending on which direction travelled may determine locations stopped @.

We will definitely stop at Sarah Island, however no other locations are considered as essential stopping points

while in the Harbour itself.

Weather:

Weather Outlook will be notified via Facebook & pwctas.com closer to the ride date.

Please check the forecasts so that you plan accordingly for the trip with the appropriate

clothing. If weather is poor & the ride considered as dangerous, an alternative route & location will be commu-

nicated on the day.

Safety:

Safety is a top priority and every rider must comply with all regulatory requirements (eg

carrying appropriate safety equipment as prescribed by MAST).

There will also be designated lead and sweeper rider in an effort to keep track of everyone at all times. All rid-

ers should keep behind the lead and ahead of the sweeper. The lead will set a pace that allows the

group to stay within easy visible range. We will have regular rest periods to allow slower riders and the sweep-er to catch up. The group will not restart until the slowest riders have also had a suitable break. Riders should be aware of basic group-ride etiquette and safety management, including NOT travelling directly behind another ski (in case it stops quickly), safe separation distances between skis, and avoiding sudden course changes, espe-

cially if others are behind you.

Fuel Requirements:

As noted above, extra fuel is required due to a travel distance of approx. 150km

will not be any BBQ supplied for this ride. .

Departure from boat ramp at 10.15 am. Route taken will be up river which is 18 klms long and down river is 9

klms long and then the same for return distance. Which way we go first will depend on the days weather fore-

cast.

This is a quick (usually Smooth) river ride… at the mouth of the river is the Pieman Heads. PEOPLE DROWN

All riders will be supplied with an orange hi-viz vest as this will make it easier to be seen by all on the water. Ride

leaders & sweepers will wear a yellow Hi-viz vest as a contrast for all riders to be visually aware of who to fol-

low.

Please understand that we are going to a remote place - Extra effort has been under taken by myself to ensure

this trip runs smoothly - I have had to advise the servo that we will be refueling as they don't stock much fuel

and us refueling our skis could run the town short for the rest of the week or they could run out with only 10

out of our 25 skis refueled.

Corinna Restaurant will need to purchase extra supplies for their restaurant as there has never been a group

booking like ours before etc...

THERE IS NO Mobile phone Coverage in Corinna at All. You are advised to

give family members this number incase your needed to be contacted in an

emergency 03 64461170
