A FINAL NOTE

FROM THE EDITORS Doris & Duane Burke Dear MONTREUX neighbors,

It has been a pleasure living here and working with volunteer board members to benefit our community but the time has arrived for us to resign from the MONTREUX HOA Board as we move on in life. This is a lovely community and your Board and past board members have done a great job of keeping it that way. Our thanks to you all for helping to make it a pleasure to live here. Now that the housing market has improved, we will be listing our home for sale, probably in April. So, if you want to choose your new neighbor, this is the time to do it. Also, this March edition of the quarterly MONTREUX News will be the last one that we will edit and distribute. So, if you would like to consider volunteering to be the editor of the MONTREUX News, please contact Judy Fenyk-Melody, Board President. She can be reached at email address: [email protected]. What are we going to do next? Probably become vagabonds spending time in our favorite places in Washington, Southern California, Hawaii and a place or two in Western Europe. And we will always remember MONTREUX as one of our favorite places. Best wishes to you all.

Montreux Waterfalls

and Lakes Newsletter Report Jerry Lilly, Chairman (206) 972-6919 (cell)

Lakes There have been no recent report of problems with the lakes, so all should be in good shape. Waterfalls Both the large falls and the small falls continue to work normally. We are still having a few occasional minor problems with the remote monitoring system. I can remotely monitor water levels in both ponds separately, the current draw for each pump separately, air temperature, and the water usage of each pond separately. For some strange reason the monitoring system transmits bad water use data every once in a while. Last winter the ultrasonic water level sensor reading went bad. We are working on this and hope to have it working with fewer failures in the near future. Over the last 6 months water usage has averaged $41.96 per month.

At-The-Doors - Dealing With Sales People Regarding magazine sales Alert: This sounds like the magazine sales people who are imported from far off places (like Baltimore and Indianapolis), where inner-city recovering crime youth are brought in vans to communities like ours to sell magazines. The sales pitch is that they are selling the magazines to pay for rehab camp, or to "return to the community" etc. I wrote a discussion of this in our Montreux newsletter a couple years ago. These people are being used by their parent organizations as free sales labor. It is important that our residents do not buy anything from these traveling sales teams, because it encourages them to come back year after year. The police know about these organizations (some of them sell paintings or artwork, too), and want to be informed of them immediately. In the past the police have come and questioned them, found that they do not have a permit, and then their support van whisks them away (to some other unsuspecting neighborhood). It is best to politely say "No thank you and get rid of them quickly." If you engage them in a discussion, be prepared for an escalating confrontation about how hard-hearted you are. Then call the police. They want to know about these incidents and they will come to investigate. Usually, by the time I call, the police have received a couple of calls, which means we, as a community, are doing our "block watch" jobs to protect our community.

Another Incident There was another recent solicitation incident with a different twist. A political action group was canvassing our neighborhood about a month ago. I believe their goal was to get signatures regarding the Affordable Healthcare Act. I never figured out whether they were for or against it. A motley young man came to our house in the dark about 8 pm and evaded my question as to whether he was soliciting. When I asked to see his solicitation permit, he became very defensive, stating that he didn't need a permit. When I insisted that he does need a permit, he said he was a member of a non-profit organization and, therefore, has a constitutional right of free speech. He declined to show any identification or proof of his claims, and then walked off. I called the police. The police had already received calls regarding these people and had questioned them. Apparently, the constitution does protect a nonprofit group's right to solicitation for political (and religious) purposes, so the police were not able to directly stop their activity on lack-of-permit grounds. The unwanted attention did, however, cause them to give up their quest, and they were not seen again. The police officer told me that we do have the right to ask them to leave, and we do have the right to ask them to verify their non-profit status. The police want to be called anyway, because they want to check out all persons who are canvassing our neighborhood. Again, the actions of several homeowners who (1) told these people to go away and (2) called the police resulted in an end to the activity. Apart from the potential crime aspect, I just don't want to be bothered at home after a long day at work. Comments courtesy of neighbor, Gary Stimac, [email protected]

WHY THE WATERFALLS? By Doris & Duane Burke

Now that we have completed this, our last MONTREUX News, we thought we would give you an explanation of why a picture of MONTREUX waterfalls are always on the cover of the News for the issues that we have published.

The answer is simply that the falls at the entrance to our community symbolize the quality of MONTREUX! The pictures on the cover have been a quarterly reminder of that quality. But even more than that, the beauty of waterfalls, whether natural or artificial, is mesmerizing wherever they are. People drive and hike for miles to see waterfalls. You have the opportunity to enjoy MONTREUX Falls every day. Although you may drive by our Falls regularly, how often do you stop in that parking area in front of the Falls, turn on your safety blinkers, and enjoy the relaxing beauty of our Falls? We encourage you to do it, you will find the experience both enjoyable and revitalizing.
