We meet at the Grass Valley Charter School at 6:30.

It's also the month where we reveal our Guild Challenge for the year.

Guild Meeting Dates March 2018

March 2018 President’s Message Hello Quilters!

As I write this in mid-February, I have yet to start on my Guild Challenge due at the upcoming meeting.  I’ve endlessly changed my mind but have a plan now.  I just have to actually start! How many of you are in the same boat?  The upcoming Guild Challenge reveal and March Mixer is my favorite meeting of the year.  I joined the guild 3 years ago after coming to the March meeting and seeing all the fabulous challenge quilts.  And this year our Vice President, Lorna, sounds like she has a fun and exciting plan for the mixer. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there.

As always, if you have any questions or comments about this or anything guild related, feel free to contact me anytime.

The Home Workshop is a time for quilters to gather and enjoy each others' company. Most months, one of our own presents

a class. The teacher volunteers her expertise and time. The

students provide their own materials, machine, and tools. The guild provides cutting mats, ironing stations, and extension cord. It's a win-win situation and offers time for friends, both old and new, to meet for

great fellowship.

This month the Home Workshop is featuring a class for a Tote Bag. Oh no, not just any tote bag, but one that is large enough for a cutting mat and other equipment. It is being taught by Robi Holman. Unfortunately this month is full, but there is a waiting list for a later date. Be sure to look for the sign up sheet at the guild meeting.

Even though the class is full, do come and join us. There will be a group working on independent projects, in the corner of course, but the cutting mats and irons are available to everyone. This is a delightful time to meet with new and familiar friends. Have a quilting dilemma, this might just be the place to find help.

So, please, do join us at the Church of the Latter Day Saints on March 22, at the end of Hollow Way in Nevada City, just past the cemetery. We begin at 9:30 and end promptly at 3:00. Bring a lunch or buy one down the street. Bring a drink, but please, no coffee or tea out of respect for the beliefs of the church.

Questions? Please call Theresa at 521-7444 or Bonnie at 272-2469.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

ANNIVERSARY! ! ! Nancy Holtz became Community Service Co-Chair just one short year ago. She jumped in without hesitation - a huge commitment because CS is not just the third Thursday of the month, there are many aspects. When she saw the list of responsibilities and the time commitment she DID NOT RUN! Thank you Nancy – it is a pleasure working with you.

WHAT DOES CS NEED? Our support of the following agencies depleted our supply of baby, lap, and twin size quilts. We have quilts ready for quilting and binding. A great opportunity to hone your machine quilting skills – stitch in the ditch, meander, wavy lines top to bottom, side to side, or corner to corner. We also need help with sorting donations, making kits, preparing quilt tops and sandwiches, attaching labels, sewing up backs, and packaging the quilts for the agencies. Anyone can participate – members and non-members – bring a friend!

URGENT NEED by MAY! Graduating FOSTER YOUTH – 10 TWIN size to help these students make their way as they graduate high school and leave the foster care system.

WHO DO WE SUPPORT? The agencies and recipients are grateful for your generosity. CHILDREN served by CASA, CPS, and Domestic Violence. JUVENILE to TWIN size are needed.

FIRE LOSS – community members who have lost their homes to fire or other causes. We need every size – baby to queen/king – for families.

HOME BOUND SENIORS – Nevada County Adult Protective Services works to keep seniors at home and out of convalescent care. We try to give 10 LAP quilts each month.

HOSPITALITY HOUSE – clients are enrolled in training programs and moving out into their own housing. We try to give 10 TWIN quilts each month.

A NEW selection of kits and patterns is being prepared and new fabric is always being donated. If one of the kits does not excite you, we welcome you to come by and pick up a pattern, fabric, and thread or what you need to make up your favorite pattern.

Kits are available at Guild meetings or CS Thursday. If those days do not work for you, please call Nancy or me and we will arrange to meet you. Please let us know if you are aware of individuals, families, or other agencies we can help.

WHERE ARE WE LOCATED? The Nevada County Historical Society building, directly across from the CDF/Cal-Fire Department and next to Sierra Presbyterian Church. Take the Gold Flat exit, and go towards Ridge Road. At the stop sign, turn left. At the next stop sign, turn left again into the parking lot, then go to the back of the building. We meet 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., third Thursday of each month. Want to help but cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Contact Nancy or me for other arrangements.

Thank you, Marjorie and Nancy

Quilt Show Boutique The Boutique will again be a feature of our Quilt Show 2018. We hope you are all thinking (and maybe already

working) on ideas for items to sell. We are excited to see all of your clever creations!!! Sign ups will begin at our February Guild meeting. We also plan to have a meeting of interested vendors to discuss ways to make this year's shop even bigger and better than last year’s.

Stay tuned for more information.

Joan Mosley and Barbara Ceresa Boutique Co-Chairs 2018

Quilt Show Raffle Baskets The Raffle Basket Committee encourages you to consider sponsoring a basket. Baskets can be sponsored by individuals, a small group of friends, or mini-groups. It can be a fun way to work together collecting items with a specific theme. To help us plan on how many baskets we will feature, there will be Basket Sponsor Commitment forms available to pick up at the March meeting. The baskets are a very popular attraction at the show, and virtually 100% of the funds generated will go to the guild. We hope you will use this opportunity to take part. We will also accept individual donations at the March meeting to be placed in like-themed baskets.

Thank you, Ginny Lee & Nancy Holz Basket Co-chairs

QUILT SHOW NEWS “America the Beautiful”

It has been a busy couple of months for the Quilt Show committee.  Sharon Alves has resigned as Chair.  Barbara Ceresa has graciously volunteered to replace her.  There has been a lot of discussion around ways to make up for an unexpected increase for the use of the fairgrounds.  The Guild Board and the Quilt Show Board has voted to increase the gate fee by $1 to offset some of this expense.  At this time

the Guild percentage income from the Country Store and Boutique will remain at 15%.  After completion of the 2018 Quilt Show, the Guild Board and the Quilt Show Board will review whether these percentages will increase in 2019.  The Guild will be notified of any increase in the months following the 2018 Quilt Show.

More hands help make the job easier.  The following areas still need volunteers:Gate, Banners, Hospitality, Hall of Honor, Country Store, Awards and Ballots Props, Programs, Equipment, Quilt Entries, Volunteer Coordinator, Cleanup

Look for the sign up sheets at the Guild Meeting.  With so many choices, surely one will be a good fit for you.

Thanks!Sophia

All mini groups are groups of quilters who choose their own meeting dates, times, and how they will operate. I’m here to guide or give suggestions and to either add you to an existing one or to help form a new one. It’s a great opportunity to get to know other quilters, learn from each other and form friendships.

New Member: RITA BEHR I have lived in the area since 1961 and graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1976.  Attended some junior college courses and I have been an Income Tax Preparer under a C.P.A. for many years.  I work in the Yuba City area and commute there with my husband of over twenty years.

My Mother, Cynthia (Bertie) Brem is one of the founding members of this Guild.  I am relatively new to quilting myself.  A late starter, but having some fun with it.  I have some artsyness to me, or at least I think I do.  Being a beginner I like to stay with basic quilt designs for now, and practice good 1/4" seams and color combinations.

I bought a long arm Tin Lizzy 18" that is very old.  It and I have been doing pretty well, it was a trade-in at one of the Quilt shops in Yuba City.  Could use some coaching some time with it, but not right now.  We are going into our crazy long hours work season.  So in May I will come up for air again.

I hope to learn numerous things from the Guild and meet really nice people.  May even help with the donated quilts also.  Oh, I really like one of my Mom's good friends, Lorna Tiller.  I find her to be very nice and real good with advice.  I do miss my Mom's good knowledge on this subject and other subject, but Alzheimer's steals it away.  But she still gives us a good kick once in a while.  She has liked my quilts so far, but hey, I'm her kid!

New Member: PAVANA BOHEGIANI moved here about 5 years ago from Marin County. I have been married to the most wonderful man for 30 years. We raised 3 children in Marin County. 2 have followed us up here and live in Nevada City. My youngest is a Cpl. in the Marine Corps. I pray every day

for his safety and hope he will live up here when he finishes his contract in March of 2019.

My grandmother was a professional seamstress with the Singer Co. in Atlanta, GA in the early 1920’s-1950’s. I grew up around sewing but never learned myself. I was too much of a tomboy outside climbing trees. When my mother died in 2015 I got inspired to learn so I could make a tribute quilt. She was my best friend and I still miss her every day. It took me 6 months to make this piece and I had sewing lessons in my home to teach me how to construct it. There isn’t a straight line in the whole thing.Since then I have been taking every class and workshop I can find. I am hooked to say the least. I volunteer several hours each week with Hospice of the Foothills. I work in the office one day a week, am an active part of the Dying Vigil team and have 2 patients at any given time for friendly or respite visits. I have volunteered to take over the Treasure Table from Sheron and look forward to making lots of new friends at the guild. I need help with everything so I would really like to join a mini group.
