1 Greetings Fellow AGA Members and Prospective Members: I hope you were able to attend the March chapter meeting where we heard from Andy Valentine, CFP, Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Mr. Valentine gave us a historical perspective on Volatility and the Long-term Investor. Since March is CGFM month, we were also honored to recognize all of the CGFMs who were in attendance. In the newsletter, we have included a list of our 166 chapter members who have the CGFM certification. I encourage each of you to attend the chapter meetings as often as you can. The meetings provide a great opportunity to network with colleagues and hear from professionals in various fields. We only have two more meetings for this program year, one of which will be our awards luncheon in May, but the chapter meetings will resume in September. The Community Service Committee has provided great opportunities for each chapter member to serve those in need with your time, your talents, and your resources. We had a great response to our fundraiser for the Elephant Sanctuary as member donations exceeded the chapter’s $500 match. On March 8, we assisted Nashville’s Public Television Station, Channel 8, with their fundraising efforts, and members were given the opportunity to donate during the station’s pledge drive. Watch for announcements from the Education Committee of additional audio conferences. You still have March and April in which to sponsor new members and be entered into the Membership Committee’s sponsorship March 2012 Volume 35, Number 7 President’s Message competition, with the possibility of winning $100 or $50. You will also receive a free lunch certificate for each two new members that you sponsor. For our April chapter meeting, we look forward to hearing from a representative of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. Please watch for the reservation announcement and invite friends and colleagues that you think might be interested in joining AGA to come to the April meeting. I look forward to greeting you and your guests at the meeting. If I can assist you in any way with your AGA membership or your interest in becoming an AGA member, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Your Chapter Leadership Team is shown on the last page of the newsletter. Please feel free to contact any of us with questions or concerns. If there is anything we can do to improve your membership experience or to encourage you to become a member, please let us know. Greetings Fellow AGA Members and Prospective Members:

I hope you were able to attend the March chapter meeting where we heard from Andy Valentine, CFP, Senior Vice President with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

On March 8, we assisted Nashville’s Public Television Station, Channel 8, with their fundraising efforts, and members were given the opportunity to donate during the station’s pledge drive.

competition, with the possibility of winning $100 or $50.

Dennis Dycus, Nashville Chapter Nominee, Wins National AGA Award

The Nashville Chapter nominated Dennis Dycus, CGFM, CPA, CFE, for the William R. Snodgrass Distinguished Leadership Award, which was established by AGA to formally recognize state government professionals who exemplify and promote excellence in government financial management and who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in enhancing sound financial management legislation, regulations, practices, policies, and systems. The award was presented to Dennis at AGA’s National Leadership Conference, which was held in Washington, DC in February.

Dennis, the Director of the Division of Municipal Audit and a career employee with Tennessee’s Office of the Comptroller of the Treasury, worked under the leadership of William R. Snodgrass, Comptroller, for many years. Dennis is a charter member and past president of the Nashville Chapter.

A portion of the chapter’s nomination form stated, “Dennis has made numerous contributions toward improvement of the accounting, auditing, and financial reporting for all forms of local governments in the State of Tennessee.” The nomination form also cited, “For over thirty years, Dennis has been very active in training local government officials as well as auditors of local governments. AGA has twice recognized his efforts with the presentation of their National Education Award in 1989 and 1997.”

In response to being congratulated on his selection for this award, Dennis said, “I have been fortunate to have received several awards during my 39 years with the Comptroller’s Office. However, this one has a very special significance for me in that I had the privilege of working for Mr. Snodgrass for 27 years. Being acknowledged that I have demonstrated leadership characteristics even remotely similar to those of Mr. Snodgrass is truly an honor.”

If someone were to have asked me 25 years ago if I thought I would still be living in the state of Tennessee, I would not have hesitated in saying, “There is no way.” I would never even have expected to have reached the 30-year mark as an employee of the Comptroller of the Treasury. This just goes to show that you never know what life may bring, but I am grateful.

My story began in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, in the Keystone State of Pennsylvania, where I was born, raised, and educated. I am the oldest of three children born to my parents, who are now in their 70’s and are still blessed to be alive and still blessed to have been married for over 50 years. I, along with my brother and sister, am grateful to them for the values they instilled in us and the great sacrifices they made in order to send all of us to college. It was because of this sacrifice that I was able to graduate from Temple University in May 1981 and receive the degree of Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.

My professional career began with the Comptroller of the Treasury, Department of Audit, Division of State Audit, in January 1982, where I started

as a Legislative Auditor I, and I am now a Legislative Audit Manager with the New Performance Audit Group. I am blessed to have earned several professional certifications and to be a member of several professional organizations, including this chapter, where I have also served as the Chapter Secretary and Chapter Treasurer. In 2011, I was honored to receive the President’s Award from our Immediate Past President, Melvin Jones, Jr. I also serve on the Board of Directors of the Southeast Financial Credit Union, where I currently chair the Audit Committee.

I acknowledge and profess God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit as the head of my life. I am a part of a strong prayer group made up of other employees of the Division of State Audit, as well as other state employees, who are well aware of the power of prayer. Having my spiritual foundation in the Church of God In Christ, I am an active member of The Temple Church, under the leadership of Pastor Darrell A. Drumwright. One of my favorite hymns of the church is “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” especially the portion of the verse that says, “All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me!”

While never having any children of my own, I am blessed to be the godmother of three wonderful young adults who have all graduated from college. I am also the proud aunt of one handsome nephew, who is in middle school; and two beautiful nieces, one who is in high school and the other who has taken her rest in the Lord.

CEC Member Spotlight – Scarlet Sneed Two-Year Director, Meetings and Attendance Co-Chair

It was on December 30, 2008, that our faith in the Lord was tested when my first niece was savagely murdered at 20 years old. The trial judge stated that in her 17 years of sitting on the bench, she had never seen “a more brutal crime.” My niece suffered more than 30 slashing and stab wounds at the hand of her ex-boyfriend. While I am not able to tell the whole story here, I included this detail so that others know that domestic violence is real. I also want to convey the message that it was our strong family faith and trust in the Lord that helped us in this extremely painful loss. And through all of this we still love and trust the Lord.

I have always been one that loved to take pictures, but this tragedy has motivated me to increase my interest and knowledge in photography and help others realize the story from generation to generation that pictures can tell. We all know the saying: “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

With all of that said, I would like to close by saying: always trust in the Lord; let your family and friends know that you love them while you can; and cherish, as well as keep alive, the memory of those who now take their rest in the Lord!
