Wrigley Field as “a unique, intimate stadi-um. There’s no parking lot, and people canwatch the game from houses across thestreet. It was surprising to see well-man-icured green grass in the middle of the city.

“Going to a game was a real treat becausebecause we didn’t do it very often. I got anautograph or two, al-though I don’t remem-ber whose. I never sawJackie Robinson play.I was 5 when he playedhis first major-leaguegame. But I knew abouthim because I grew upin a family very inter-ested in social justiceand politics.”

Ford’s family has afew athletes. His sonBen, 46, “went to USCand played baseball, buthe threw his arm out. Heand his younger brother(Willard, 43) were pret-ty involved in sports.”Another son, Malcolm,26, “is more like me,”the actor says.

Dodgers outfielder“Matt Kemp is one ofmy son’s (Liam’s) favor-ite players,” Ford says. “We had the plea-sure of meeting him two years ago at theDodgers Spring Training Camp. It had noth-ing to do with 42. I was there as the Trans-portation and Dad Department, but I got tosee backstage and talk to the coaches. I lovethe baseball environment — coming to

Dodger Stadium and watching games.”Ford and Boseman are sitting in one of

Dodger Stadium’s private suites, overlookingthe field. On one wall is a photograph taken atBrooklyn’s Ebbets Field on the Dodgers’Opening Day 1950. Second baseman Rob-inson, catcher Roy Campanella, shortstop Pee

Wee Reese and first base-man Gil Hodges arestanding behind a snow-man, and the captionreads “Snowed Out.”

“I’ve seen that picture,”says Boseman, who spentsix months researchingRobinson, training withprofessional players for

42’s baseball sequences and meeting withRobinson’s widow, Rachel. “We sat on a couchtogether at her office at the Jackie RobinsonFoundation. While she showed me pictures, she asked me why I thought I should playher husband.

“ ‘Sidney Poitier was supposed to play thisrole,’ she said. ‘Denzel Washington was sup-posed to play it. Why do you get to play it?’ ”

Boseman, who has been writing plays, directing and acting on stage and TV sincegraduating from Howard University, an-swered from his heart: “I told her I’d put myentire energy and life into the work.”

That’s what she wanted to hear. “She toldme how she helped Jackie to deal with theday-to-day pressure of crossing this (color)barrier and the responsibility he had,” Bose-man says. “She also told me little things, likewhat attracted her to him and what thecountry was like then.”

What surprised Boseman most aboutRobinson was how accomplished he was asan athlete, also playing football and basket-ball and running track. “His past was morestriking and informative than the (racial)stuff he put up with. He had a certain dis-cipline, part of which may have come frombeing in the military and his upbringing ingeneral,” Boseman says.

“Jackie Robinson played in the clutchevery single play. Every time the ball cameto him, every time he came to bat, he knewhe would be judged. He couldn’t get intotrouble in his personal life. Insults and in-juries didn’t happen just on the field. To liveand play in the clutch makes him a hero. ...It’s a sacrifice.”

Although Boseman, whose father owns anupholstery business and whose mother is anurse, considers basketball his real sport, henever aimed to be a professional athlete.

“I was recruited by colleges,” he says,“but I didn’t want to be that kid who thinkshe’s going to be in the NBA. My oldestbrother is a minister and my other brotherwas a dancer with Alvin Ailey, so I knew

games, too.”“It’s America. You’re

required to play ball,”Harrison Ford says.“I played Little Leaguefor two games, and then Iconvinced my parents that it wasn’tnecessary for my social develop-ment. I don’t remember anythinggood or bad happening on the field, but I didn’t much like the notion ofteam sports. I’m not competitive.I’m sort of a loner.”

Hollywood knows how to tapinto actors’ personal histories,so when Warner Bros. waslooking for someone to playbaseball legend Jackie Rob-inson, the virtually unknownBoseman, 36, got the call. And when the studio needed a bull-headed, gruff, forward-thinking Dodgers general managernamed Branch Rickey, who took it

upon himself to integrate MajorLeague Baseball, it turned to Ford, 70.

The end result, 42, recounts in riv-eting detail how in 1947 the sport was

forever changed when Robinson joinedthe Dodgers. His talent, combined

with both men’s courage tostand up to an unwritten col-

or barrier, brought a newvitality to the national pastime. The film, whosetitle refers to the numberon Robinson’s Dodger jersey, opens April 12.

Although both Fordand Boseman have hap-py memories of tossinga baseball around withtheir fathers, theirsports interests and

skills widely diverge.“I’m not an athlete,

but late in life I startedskiing and playing ten-nis,” Ford says. “I workout with a tennis pro anhour a day five days aweek. I watch baseball

more now because I havea 12-year-old son (Liam),

who has been playing everyseason. I throw a ball with him

and Calista (his third wife, actress Calista Flockhart), andI go to his games and some-times go to see the Dodgers.”

Here are afew simpleways to helpstinky spotssmell good:

Roll-onbefore bed.People tend tosweat less atnight, so usingantiperspirantbefore you hitthe sack allowsmore of thealuminum-based activeingredient to be pulled into pores, and block the sweateven better. Deodorant does nothing for perspiration, but it helps eliminate odors. It’s usually alcohol-based,which makes skin less appealing to bacteria. Prescrip-tion antiperspirants are available, if needed. Note: Youmay have heard ingredients in these products couldraise breast cancer risk, but experts say there’s noconclusive evidence of that.

Soak toes in tea. Black tea contains tannic acid, which kills bacteria and closes sweat pores. Just boiltwo teabags for 15 minutes, add two quarts of cold waterto cool it off, and soak your toes for 30 minutes a day fora week. More tips: Wash feet daily with antibacterialsoap and dry well; sprinkle cornstarch or antifungal

powder on your feet and bakingsoda in your shoes; and wearmoisture-wicking socks.

Brush your tongue. Its un-even surface is the perfect host to

trap odor-causing bacteria. So when you brush yourteeth (twice a day and after meals, if possible), give yourtongue a good scrubbing. If it’s coated with an over-growth of bacteria (from smoking or dry mouth, forexample), consider using a tongue scraper. Also: flossonce a day (to remove odor-causing food particles andplaque); drink lots of water or chew sugarless gum; andschedule regular dental checkups. 6

HERE’S A surprise: Sweat doesn’tactually smell. Most sweat glandssecrete a water-salt mixture. But

the glands in your underarms, groin andscalp are linked to hair follicles and re-lease a little oil, too. When bacteria onyour skin feasts on this fatty sweat, it’s thebyproducts that cause odor.

Loose SaggyNeck Skin –CanAnyCreamCureTurkeyNeck?DEAR DORRIS: I’m a woman who is 64 yearsyoung who suffers from really loose skin undermy chin and on my lower neck. I hate the term, but my grandkids say I have “turkey neck” andfrankly, I’ve had enough of it!

I have tried some creams designed to help tighten and firm that loose, saggy skin, butthey did not work. Is there any cream out there that can truly help my loose neck skin?

Turkey Neck, Houston, TX

DEAR TURKEY-NECK: In fact, there is a very potent cream on the market thatfirms, tightens and regenerates new skin cells on the neck area. It is called theDermagist Neck Restoration Cream®. This cream contains an instant lift ingredientthat tightens the skin naturally, as well as deep moisturizing ingredients to firm the skinand make it more supple. Amazingly, the Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® alsohas Stem Cells taken from Malus Domesticus, a special apple from Switzerland.

These stem cells are actually unprogrammed cells that can mimic those of young skinthat stays tight, firm and wrinkle free. As an alternative to the scary surgeries or facelifts that many people resort to, this cream really packs a big punch on the loose saggyskin of the neck.

The Dermagist Neck Restoration Cream® is available online at Dermagist.com oryou can order or learn more by calling toll-free, 888-771-5355. Oh, I almost forgot… Iwas given a promo code when I placed my order that gave me 11% off. The code was“REG5N16”. It’s worth a try to see if it still work.

As for the national pastime,Boseman says, “I’ve alwayswatched baseball for the fun ofthe game and the strategy.”Ford agrees: “I can watch agame and not root for eitherside. I’m just amazed by theskills.”

Both recognize how baseballcan be inspirational.

“It teaches you discipline andconfidence,”Ford says. “It’slike an invest-ment. You getout of it whatyou put into it.You work withwhatever oppor-tunity and talentyou have.”

“One of the greatest thingsbaseball teaches you is dealingwith failure,” Boseman adds.“.300 is a good batting average. That’s a good metaphor for anactor, when I think of how manyauditions I’ve been on and howmany parts I didn’t get.

“Being able to take awaysomething from the experiencebut let it go and make a newstab at the next one is an impor-tant lesson to learn,” Bosemansays. “Life is like that.” 6

THE GOOD THING aboutpotluck parties is that ifyou’re the host, you don’t

have to cook everything. Thebad thing about potlucks is thatif you’re a guest, you alwayshave to cook something. Still,it’s one of the best and mostpopular ways of entertainingthese days. Here’s how to throwa party like a pro:

Plan it online. Websitessuch as LuckyPotluck.com,SignUpGenius.com and PerfectPotluck.com will let a host offerher guests a fixed number ofslots for each type of dish. “Youcan create a meal plan whereyou need two appetizers, twomain dishes and two desserts,”says Adina Bailey, co-founderof PerfectPotluck.com. “Oncetwo people sign up for appetiz-ers, the next people who cometo your sign-up will have tochoose to bring either a maindish or dessert.”

Always make more. “I usu-ally bring enough of a dish tofeed at least twice as manypeople as I am bringing to thepotluck,” says Ben Robie, foun-der of LuckyPotluck.com. Thatusually winds up in the sameballpark as the recommended8 to 12 servings or a 9- by 13-inch pan’s worth of food.

Try a theme. “A themedpotluck works well if the hostchooses one that will add extraentertain-ment valuefor guests, but not extrawork,” saysAngel Rut-ledge of SignUpGenius.com.“Something like a breakfasttheme means easy-to-preparedishes that everyone willenjoy.”

Tools of the trade. Peoplewho frequent potluck partiesmay want to have on handan insulated casserole carrier(Anchor Hocking, $20), a hotpack (Vesture, $11.99) and per-haps a warming tray (Oster,$80). And for those who usuallybring dessert, tote the sweetsin a cupcake and cake carrier(Sur La Table, $29.95). 6
