Marcy Elementary School is among 11 high-achieving schools in the state recognized through the Wisconsin Title I Schools of Recognition awards program. In addition to recog- nizing high-achieving schools, the state program honors schools for high-progress and beating the odds. Combined, a total of 107 Wisconsin schools were recognized in one of the three categories. As a high-achieving school, Marcy demonstrated high achievement at the school level and had achievement gaps less than three points between stu- dent groups or showed evidence of reducing gap. Data used to determine the awards are from the 2018-19 school year. Principal Michele Trawicki credited a dedicated staff and the school community for Marcy’s success. “Marcy educators are com- mitted to creating a nurturing sense of belonging for each student, and our families stand with us,” Trawicki said. “Together we do whatever it takes to help students succeed.” DPI cancelled the 2019-20 Schools of Recognition Ceremony which had been set for May. Awards will be mailed directly to recipients. Wisconsin Title I School of Recognition awards highlight schools that have demon- strated success in educating students from low-income families. To be eligible, schools must receive federal Title I funding to pro- vide services for economically disadvantaged children. Now more than ever I’ve found that people are pay-ing close attention to their immunity and overallhealth. While lifestyle changes can be quite difficult, especially during a pandemic, there is no better timethan now to work on your health and strive for opti-mal immunity. Having a strong immune system willhelp protect you from invaders such as viruses andbacteria, shorten the duration if you do get sick, keepyour energy high, help your body with detoxification, and can even help protect you against cancer. A strongimmune system is the key to optimal health. In thisarticle, I’d like to share some of the most practicalhealth tips to boost your immune system and to helpkeep you healthy.

A strong immune systemis the key to optimal health.

Two of the most powerful tools to stay healthy andkeep your immune system strong are optimal sleepand staying hydrated. Make sure you are prioritizingyour sleep every single night, and try sipping on fil-tered water every 15-20 minutes throughout the day. When your mouth becomes dry, it becomes acidic. Thisallows viruses and bacteria to take over, and makes itharder for your immune system to fight off infection.Sipping on organic green tea would be great duringthis particular pandemic, since green tea is anti-viral,and drinking anything hot helps to move a virus orbacteria down into the stomach, rather than in thelungs.

Two of the most powerful tools to stay healthyand keep your immune system strong are optimalsleep and staying hydrated.

Another powerful tool to boost your immune sys-tem is to optimize your diet and be mindful of what’son the end of your fork. Healthy foods such as veg-etables, fruits, and organic, pastured animal productsare going to help your body fight off infections andkeep your immune system strong. Now is the time toexperiment with recipes you’d normally not have timefor, and try to use this time to enhance your cookingskills. You may even want to consider meal preppingso you only have to go to the store once or twice dur-ing the week. Try to double or triple your recipes touse as leftovers, or to freeze for in the future. You mayeven want to consider intermittent fasting. Not onlyare there fewer meals you have to prepare when youintermittent fast, but you also receive tons of immuneboosting benefits from fasting!

Another powerful tool to boost your immune sys-tem is to optimize your diet and be mindful ofwhat’s on the end of your fork.

Along with diet, sleep and hydration, there aresome research backed nutrients that can help youfight off and/or prevent viral infections and supportoptimal immunity. These nutrients include vitamin C,zinc, turmeric, medicinal mushrooms, and quercetin. All of these nutrients can be found in supplementalform in our retail store. Please ask a store associate if

you have any questions onthese products. You may alsowant to consider diffusing orusing essential oils topically. Some of the best anti-viralessential oils include pepper-mint, tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, clove, thyme andoregano. We also carry a vari-ety of therapeutic and foodgrade essential oils in theretail store. Both our retailstore and clinic are open, andwe plan on remaining opento continue to serve our com-munity. I invite you to pleasegive the clinic a call for a free15 minute phone consulta-tion with myself to go over any health concerns, andto help keep you as healthy as possible. The clinic isoffering bothvirtual and in-person appointments. Thenumber you can reach us at is 262-251-2929. Stayhealthy!

Practical Ways to Stay Healthy and Keep Your Immune System Strong

BY DWD SECRETARY CALEB FROSTMANThe goal of the Unemployment

Insurance (UI) program, which providespartial wage replacement to workers outof work through no fault of their own,is to provide economic stability to notjust individuals and their families, butto support the entire state. UI benefitsensure bills are paid, families are fed,and local businesses are supported dur-ing times of economic contraction.

Governor Tony Evers, throughEmergency Order, has taken multiplesteps to provide direct assistance toindividuals out of work due to theCOVID-19 pandemic. He waived worksearch requirements to ensure individu-als stay attached to their previousemployers and loosened the "able andavailable to work requirement" toextend benefits to more workersimpacted by the virus.

The federal government has alsotaken multiple steps to assist theunemployed, and the Department ofWorkforce Development's (DWD) UIDivision staff are preparing to imple-ment the new requirements as soon asthey receive final guidance from theU.S. Department of Labor.

But the only way to get much need-ed financial assistance into the handsof Wisconsinites faster is to repeal theone-week waiting period for UI bene-fits. Under current state law, workers donot receive any benefits for the firstweek they are out of work. Prior to thepandemic, more than 40 states had a

one-week waiting period for benefits.According to recent reports, fewer thaneight states still have the requirementin place.

Wisconsin is one of those states, butwe don't have to be. While the one-week wait hurts our state's families andeconomy in a normal situation, it willhurt even more now. Once available toclaimants, the Federal government'sPandemic Unemployment Compensation(an additional $600 per week for thosereceiving unemployment benefits) willbe available for the first week of aclaim, but only if that state does nothave a one-week waiting period.Foregoing the first week of needed stateand Federal benefits can easily beavoided through legislative action. Thetime to act is now. Out-of-workWisconsinites don't have weeks to paytheir bills. Essential Wisconsin busi-nesses don't have weeks to make theirpayroll.

Gov. Evers called on the legislatureon March 17 to pass legislation torepeal the one-week waiting period. The governor and Democrats in the leg-islature have continued to championthis commonsense measure. I wasencouraged to see this proposal gainbipartisan support and now ask thatthe legislature act swiftly to guide thelaw change through both houses andget it on Governor Evers' desk as soonas possible. The stability of Wisconsinfamilies and our economy depends ontimely legislative action.

essential part of assisting Wisconsinites

A few generations ago, dining outwas an experience reserved for specialoccasions. However, until recently, whenrestaurants were shuttered in the wakeof the public health crisis prompted bythe spread of COVID-19, many peoplewere dining out multiple times a week.

Hospitality solutions provider Fourthsurveyed 1,000 American adults in 2019and 56 percent reported dining out atleast two to three times per week. Tenpercent said they ate out four to sixtimes each week, while 6 percent saidthey dined out everyday.

People accustomed to relying onrestaurant for meals multiple times perweek may be unaccustomed to cookingmany meals at home, which has become

the norm thanks to restrictions placedon restaurants and other food-relatedbusinesses as part of COVID-19 social dis-tancing precautions. Learning how toshop for food and prepare items by max-imizing available ingredients can reducetrips to the store and help people reducefood waste at a time when food is not asreadily available as it once was.

1. Plan meals/browse circulars.Meal planning and shopping lists arevital tools for people preparing meals athome. Without doing so, individuals canbe left floundering in the supermarket, spending more money than necessaryand making impulse purchases (all thewhile forgetting items they truly need).Use sales circulars to browse weekly dis-

counted items at stores. Build a week'sworth of meals off of these sale items -going so far as to write out a cursorymenu - then fill in any extra ingredientsor staples needed on a shopping list.Leave a day or two for leftovers. Tryorganizing the list to follow the naturallayout where items are arranged in thestore.

2. Shop smart. With paper and penin hand or a digital list compiled on yourphone, go aisle by aisle and check offitems as they are added to the cart. Ifyou are shopping for food you hope willlast a week or more, consider substitut-ing canned and frozen foods and othernonperishables for fresh items becausethey can be stored for longer periods of

time. "Club size" or "family size" pack-ages of foods may cost less per volumeand can be sub-divided and stored forlater use.

3. Minimize waste. Cook only asmuch as is needed for the household.Generally speaking, a meat or poultryserving of three to four ounces per per-son is adequate. That means a roast orsteak of 1-1/2 to two pounds is fine fora family of four. Use up older frozen orperishable foods first. Store foods prop-erly and use them before the use-bydate. Wrap up leftovers and turn theminto new meals.

With proper planning and smartthinking, homecooking can be more effi-cient and less wasteful.

Any children in my new home should be 12years or older because I am a mature and debonair guy who likes things to be calm andtranquil. I have extraordinary manners with my food bowl and other valuable resources;I also accept treats gently. I do enjoy being outside and think a nice stroll with you everyday would be a wonderful way to spend time together. My joints get a bit stiff so tend tomeander rather than sprint. It is important for me to get daily low-impact exercise tohelp me stay happy and healthy; plus it will help me maintain my 67 pound boyishfigure. I find joy in so many things like the ecstasy of wiggling on my back in the grass, the warmth of the sun on my face or a tender scratch on my neck. I am a friendly boyand hope you will take some time to get to know me outside my kennel.I am quiteintelligent and do like to keep my brain active; perhaps we can play games or I can bechallenged by mentally stimulating toys. I am a handsome gentleman who is looking fora quiet family and would love hanging out with you by the TV while I munch on a bone.

Lawns and gardens can often benefitfrom the laying of mulch. Mulch servesvarious purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and gardenenthusiasts lay mulch to ensure theirproperties make it through spring, sum-mer and fall unscathed.

First-time homeowners with little orno landscaping experience may notunderstand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soiland protect properties from the ele-ments.

What is mulch?Mulch refers to a material spread

around or over a plant to enrich and/orinsulate its soil. Many homeowners pre-

fer mulch made of wood chips, which isboth effective and readily available. TheU.S. Environmental Protection Agencynotes that organic mulches, whichinclude leaves, wood chips, compost orgrass clippings, can be used by home-owners who want to develop eco-friend-ly landscapes.

Why mulch?Mulching can benefit plants around

a property in various ways. Many peoplelay mulch because the mulch helps soilretain moisture in the summer, whentemperatures tend to be at theirhottest. This can help plants survivesummer heat waves.

The arrival of spring is a welcomeoccurrence for many people. Buddingflowers are among the harbingers ofspring. Spring flowers can revitalizewinter-weary people just when theyneed it most — and provide reassurancethat brighter, warmer and longer hoursof sunlight are just around the corner.

Cold-tolerant flowers are hardyenough to start blooming before thelast frosts have dissipated. Other flow-ers will begin to fill in as days warm alittle bit more, according to BetterHomes and Gardens. Home gardenerslooking to warm up their gardens withearly blooms can use these flowers intheir early-season containers, windowboxes and planting beds.

• Pansy: Pansies prefer cool weather, which can make them one of the bestflowers to plant in early spring and latefall. Pansies come in a variety of colors,so there’s bound to be an offering thatwill blend with any homeowners’ land-scape design.

• Creeping phlox: Also known “mossphlox,” creeping phlox is a shortground-cover that is a herbaceous

perennial. Phlox produces small, fra-grant flowers in dense clusters, whichcan attract wildlife, such as butterflies,to their mats across the soil surface.

• Snowdrops: Snowdrops can peekout even when there is snow still on theground — sometimes as early asJanuary and February. But their name isactually a reference to their appearance,as snowdrops have three white petalsthat hang down like drops dripping offthe stem.

• Violets: These flowers are closelyrelated to pansies and, as a result, pre-fer cool seasons. Violets are generallyslightly smaller than pansy blooms, butthey can be just as beautiful. But aswith pansies, violets will start to fadewhen the heat arrives.

• Crocus: Crocus plants are relativelysmall, only reaching three to six inchesin height. However, their grass-likeleaves are some of the first sprouts thatcan be seen among bulb and corm plant-ings. Preferring full to partial sun, thesegold, purple, lavender, white, or yellowflowers can be enjoyed during the earli-est days of spring.

• Daffodil: Daffodil bulbs producecheerful, yellow flowers in early spring. They’re one of the most recognizableflowers thanks to their familiar shapeand fragrant aroma.

• Lenten rose: Hellebores, also calledthe Lenten rose or Christmas rose, can

tolerate light frosts. These blooms gettheir name from the time of year whenthey bloom, which is typically aroundthe Christian Lenten season. Despitetheir name, these delicate flowers arenot actually related to roses, however.

Homeowners can employ many differ-ent design techniques to create one-of-a-kind properties. Adding a water feature toa landscape is one such technique.

Water gardens, koi ponds or fountainshave been home landscaping trends forthe past several years. Although waterfeatures can add an element of relaxationto landscapes, such features require main-tenance to keep them attractive and run-ning properly.

The right designHomeowners should create a water

feature design that is fitting with thescale and style of their homes while alsokeeping their lifestyles in mind. Ponds arepopular water features and, like pools, come in both inground and above-groundstyles. Above-ground ponds are easier andfaster to build than inground ponds andmay be safer options for parents of youngchildren. Streams and waterfalls also arepopular and can make use of natural vari-

ations in property grading. Fountains canbe freestanding structures or a compo-nent of a pond or another body of water.

Recognize that the location of thewater feature can impact its maintenance. For example, a fountain or pond locateddirectly under deciduous trees will requiremore frequent cleaning to remove leafand tree debris. Ponds that receive directsunlight may have more pronouncedalgae growth. Homeowners should workwith a skilled water garden expert inplanning the feature’s design and locationwith safety and upkeep in mind.

Maintain pumps Water features require the constant

flow of water to prevent stagnation andproliferation of mosquito and other insectlarvae. That requires a pump to push thewater around. According to GroundsMaintenance, a green industry profession-als resource, the pump should be securelysituated on level ground so that vibra-tions will not cause the pump to movearound and eventually loosen fittings.

Even pumps protected by an intakefilter or screen can become clogged withdebris. It’s necessary to routinely inspectthe screen and the pump filter andremove any obstructions. Otherwise, thepump motor can overheat and malfunc-tion. Keep in mind that debris also mayinclude animal life, such as frogs, snakes,

turtles — anything that may be drawn tothe water feature.

Finding balanceThe wrong balance of conditions in

the water can cause problems. Accordingto the experts at This Old House, whichoffers ideas and advice for old houseenthusiasts, algae can be the root of allevil in garden features. Controlling nutri-ents, which may involve watching thelevels of nitrogen compounds and phos-phorous, will help control the algae.

Avoid locating the water featurewhere lawn and garden runoff will find itsway into the water. Filtration and routinetesting of water levels also can help.Water features that are not meant tobecome wildlife habitats may benefit froma mild sanitizer to keep algae at bay. Athorough cleaning of liners at the end ofthe season to eliminate materials thatbuild up on the bottom can help, too.

Winter preparationWhen colder weather arrives, home-

owners must decide if they want to keepthe water feature running or shut itdown. Many experts say smaller pondsshould be drained, cleaned and left emptyuntil spring. This is also a time to cutback the dead plant material and removeany tropicals from the water. Removepumps and drain water feature lines sothey can overwinter without freezing.

Mulch also can be used to suppressweeds. Weeds, which steal moistureplants need to build strong roots andsurvive summer, need light to grow. When laid correctly, mulch deprivesweeds of the light they need to grow.Organic mulches can even providehomes for crickets and a type of beetlethat feed on weed seeds.

Mulch also can deter harmful pestsdepending on the type of mulch home-owners choose. When purchasingmulch, homeowners will have to choosebetween the aforementioned organicmulch or man-made mulches, whichmay be made of plastic or rubber. Whileman-made mulches may repel pests, they also can have adverse effects.Plastic, for example, can heat up in thesummer and cause plants to burn.Certain organic mulches can repelinsects that can threaten plants. That’sbecause the majority of organic mulches

increase the amount of beneficial bacte-ria in the soil, and they also increasethe presence of helpful insects that donot pose a threat to plant life. Thosehelpful insects help keep harmfulinsects at bay. Compost is a type oforganic mulch that may attract harmfulinsects. While that does not meanhomeowners should shy away fromusing compost as mulch, they shouldknow that they may need to employorganic insecticides to combat theirunwanted guests.
