Case studies

Service: Marine electrical array architecture studyClient: ORE Catapult and The Carbon Trust

TNEI undertook a study into the future development of electrical architectures for multi device commercial arrays, involving extensive stakeholder engagement with manufacturers and developers. This study provided an extensive overview of the commercially available devices and those under development, as well as identifying a number of technology bottlenecks.

Service: Grid feasibility and connection studies Client: Wave Hub

TNEI provided engineering support for Wave Hub during the development of the project, including FEED and grid connection feasibility studies. TNEI also helped facilitate the connection of the project to the distribution grid. In addition, TNEI support was provided for companies connecting to Wave Hub with compliance studies.

Service: Scottish Islands Renewables StudyClient: The Department of Energy and Climate Change and The Scottish Government

This study considered the consenting risks, technology maturity, technology risks, grid connection options, required infrastructure, installation issues, potential and required revenue streams and maintenance requirements faced by the industry, comparing the Scottish Islands with other parts of the UK and worldwide. It involved consultation with both tidal device suppliers like Nova Innovation and Scotrenewables and tidal site developers like Scottish Power Renewables and SSE Renewables.

Steve DixonSpecialist Consultant

Steve is TNEI’s offshore renewables lead consultant and is a Chartered Electrical Engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the design, installation and commissioning of projects within the power industry. Steve ensures consistency and continuity across all offshore renewables projects (wind, wave and tidal) including concept design FEED, tender support or detailed design. He is responsible for keeping track of any potential future developments in offshore wind, including 66kV array design, medium and low

frequency option, medium voltage DC arrays and developments in HVDC technologies (circuit breaker and XLPE cable improvements). He also undertakes offshore technical due diligence including the UK transitional and enduring OFTO transmission assets and German HVDC assets.
