1 …………Get Lost Amidst the Splendour and Beauty of Sagar Island Sagar Island, popularly known as Gangasagar is an island in the Ganges delta, lying on the continental shelf of Bay of Bengal about 100 km (54 nautical miles) south of Kolkata, capital city of West Bengal. Sagar island is a part of Sundarban natural area but it does not have any tiger habitation. It has small patches of mangrove forests and small river tributaries as is the characteristic of the overall Sunderban delta. Unforgettable Sagar Island ensures a unique opportunity to watch and feel the serene beauty of the island surrounded by the sea and rivers dotted with several small creeks. Kolkata Port Trust has a pilot station and a light house at Beguakhali beckons the tourists. A short weekend trip to the island is a must for the nature lovers. Gangasagar or Sagardwip, is a place of Hindu pilgrimage. Every year on the day of Makar Sankranti (14 January), hundreds of thousands of Hindus gather to take a holy dip at the confluence of river Ganges and Bay of Bengal and offer prayers (puja) in the Kapil Muni Temple. Makar Sankranti marks the date in the Indian winter solstice when the sun enters Capricorn, heads north - always auspicious—and the days begin to get longer. It’s also the last day of the Bengali month of Poush Makar Sankranti is the only Indian festival that is celebrated according to the solar, as opposed to the lunar calendar.
