In his inaugural address, the Principal Secretary said, Sustainable DevelopmentGoals (SDGs) cut across a wide variety of social, cultural contexts, economicdimensions and geographical divisions and the key to interconnectedness amongthese multiple dimensions, is the key to improving human welfare. The SDGs whichare now part of the national development agenda have been brought to the centrestage by the NITI Aayog, he said, adding that a mega conclave was held in the monthof August, 2019, which was participated by the Secretaries of the Planning Departmentof various States/ UTs in the country, during which the State Indicator Framework(SIF) and its contour were spelt. He also informed about the plan for ranking of the Districts on those StateIndicators and opined that it can be achieved with the help of MOSPI, as an effectiveguide and mentor, so as to complete the process of finalizing SIF and disintegrate thedata at the Block and District level for replication of the entire set of SustainableDevelopment Goal indices at the District level. He further informed that the UNDP in 2017-18 has conducted a scoping study ofthe possibilities which the A&N Islands has and had prepared a roadmap of SDGs forthe Islands. The findings of the study indicated that the schemes and programmes ofthe Centre and the UT initiatives, which are already in place in the Islands are goodbases and will be a spring broad for achieving the sustainable goals. He also statedthat the Base Line Index released by the NITI Aayog shows that the A&N Islandsrank among the best in UTs and some States in some of the goals which includegender equality. However, he said, there are certain inherent impediments, logisticalconstraints which are unique to our geographical location and we have a lot to do.Urging all the Line Departments to take effective ownership of the SDGs and drivethem forward, the Principal Secretary stressed on the need for keeping the capacitybuilding programme a continuous process, so as to achieve the SDG visions, muchahead of the target set. In his key note address, the Director General (Social Statistics), MOSPI, Shri AsitKumar Sadhu said, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as theGlobal Goals, were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universalcall to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace andprosperity by 2030. He said, the sustainable goals set by the UTs and States shouldbe a realistic one and should be achievable. He also elucidated the real life examplesof sustainable goal setting and how to achieve the target using the indicators. Hesaid, the targets and indicators for each State/UT would differ depending upon thegoals set. Earlier, welcoming the gathering, the Secretary (Planning), Smti. Anjail Sehrawatsaid, a total of 17 goals have been set as SDGs including quality education, cleanwater & sanitation, climate action etc. with each goal pre-defining the target formonitoring its realization. She further said that there are a total of 169 targets spanningacross these 17 SDGs and each target further quantified by indicators to measure theprogress towards realizing them. The A&N Administration is working in line to realizethese SDGs and in this spree, a 15 years vision document has been prepared alongwith 7 years strategy from 2017-24 besides 3 years action plan from 2017-20 which hasbeen approved by the State Planning Board, to achieve the targets, the Secretarysaid. A sensitization session on SDGs was presented by the Director, NSSTA duringwhich he briefed the participants about the understan ding on global framework,process of arriving at global framework, broad structures of goal/target and indicatorsand its special features like different tier system besides State Indicator Framework,District/Block Level, and importance of capturing data. This was followed by technicalsessions in which faculty from NSSTA imparted trainings.

As part of the event, a mock drill for shoreclean-up was conducted at Corbyn's cove beach by thePCC with support from Coast Guard Air Enclave, PortBlair and various stake holders including PBMC, Forest& Health Services Departments. The participation and cooperation provided by all stakeholders towards the conduct of the drill, is indicative ofIndian Coast Guard's resolve to combat pollution at seafor protecting the flora and fauna of A&N Islands.Indian Coast Guard is responsible for marine environmentprotection in the maritime zones of India and is the CentralCoordinating Authority for response to oil spills in Indianwaters.
