From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,

This morning a group of Year 10 students led a Holy Thursday Liturgy. As part of this liturgy Year 13 students prepared a powerpoint presentation with images and reflection points. I share a few of these with you here. The full presentation can be viewed at http://maristcollege.ultranet.school.nz/WebSpace/566/

I hope you all have a safe and blessed time with family this Easter period. Thank you all for your support throughout a very busy but productive term.

Ma te atua koutou e manaaki. May our God bless us all.

Mrs Monica Johnson, Principal

The glory of God on Easter SundayWe are at a very important time in our Lenten journey. It is the time when we prepare ourselves to walk more closely with Jesus, but, more importantly a time to witness the glory of God on Easter Sunday.

Follow this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HugMM_3FfnI to remind you of this great event or to get to know about Holy Week and Easter in two minutes.

A group of 10, Year 13 students attended a PILOT workshop, held at AIS Institute. This is a Leadership Programme dedicated to Pacific Youth in schools. The purpose of this programme is to help inspire, engage and develop Pacific students to make informed decisions about their future focus before they leave high school. Thank-you to Miss Siakumi for accompanying them and to the PILOT organisers for their continuous support into our Pasifika student’s lives. We appreciate their work.

PILOT – Pacific Island Leaders of Tomorrow

PASIFIKA MATTERSMENTORING FONO was held last Tuesday night where a few guest speakers ranging from 1998-2015 former Marist students shared their experiences of their days at Marist College and what they are currently doing. They were able to impart some good advice to our students and also to our parents. As well as that, a former Pasifika Board member and PTFA parent, Danny Liuliu-Afoa who has been mentoring at Marist for the last eight years shared his work of what it involves and the benefits it has for our students. We are fortunate to have him back, mentoring our Year 13 Pasifika students.

Sports Report

TennisMarist had two teams play their grand final last week. Marist Senior A were up against a very competitive Baradene. After beating them in the opening round of the season, Baradene were determined to get the win this time round. Unfortunately Baradene were too strong and won 7 – 2. The Junior team have finished the season top of the table and undefeated, with a very convincing 7 -0 win. Well done to all the players and supporters. You did a fantastic job this season.

Winter SportAll our winter sport trials are now finished and all teams should be training. Please check the school website for the training schedule. Thank you to everyone who helped out with trials. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help out this season. We are still looking for team managers. Please email [email protected] if you can help. I look forward to this upcoming winter season.

Year 12 Workchoice Day 2017This year’s Workchoice day is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 June. On this day all Year 12s are expected to spend the day at a workplace of interest to them, instead of attending regular classes. Students should use their networks – friends, family, church and club associates – to find a workplace to visit that is relevant to their career interests or ideas. The upcoming holidays are a good time for students to begin making enquiries for suitable placements. Permission slips will be sent home with Y12s soon, along with a letter of introduction they can present to potential host employers. All placements and permissions must be finalised with the school by Friday 9 June. Please encourage your daughter in this process and assist her to find a suitable workplace to visit. Any parents or whanau in the Marist College community who are able to host one or two Year 12 students in their workplace for the day on June 14 to learn about occupations in your industry, please contact Mrs Jenni Catley, Gateway Coordinator on [email protected]. Of particular interest to our current Year 12 students are occupations in the following fields: business, law, health, nutrition, computer/ IT services, cooking/chef, outdoor education, animal care, travel and tourism, and film/ media/ photography/ animation. Students who have a career or occupation in mind but are unable to find a suitable host workplace can contact Mrs Jenni Catley, Gateway Coordinator, who will assist with matching students to workplaces.

Careers EducationFollowing on from the Careers article of last week, we would like to alert you to an opportunity for Years 10 to 13 students to join our Careers Facebook page - Kate Marist. If your daughters would like to know about opportunities available to them, they should join the page (Kate will immediately unfollow – she doesn’t want all that detail!) and they can check in. On the page there will also be a link to a google doc to check out tertiary providers and gap year opportunities.

In Term 1 there have been already a number of speakers from tertiary institutes. For Year 13, these occur weekly in their study time in Period 4 so they can choose to attend and the speakers are available in break time to present to other levels.

There will be a careers bite each week in this newsletter to help you to keep in touch with the important area of your daughter’s education.

Counsellor’s Comment: Social Media SafetyUrge young people to question their content before they post. Once they hit send, post, etc…the message is no longer theirs and the receiver can do anything they want with the message.Urge them to ask themselves# It is TRUE or a rumour?# Is the post HELPFUL or harmful?# Is the post INFORMATIONAL or gossip?# Is the post NEEDED or irrelevant?# Is the post KIND or harsh? If the post is not any of these things, or you have to question it, you probably shouldn’t post it. Remind teens that NOTHING IS PRIVATE online. Deleted items can still live on servers. People can take screenshots of posts. Private accounts can be hacked. Nothing is one hundred percent private online.(Tim Elsmore and Johanna Ithier.)Mrs Helen McEwen, Counsellor

Sacramental Programme 2017The Sacramental Programme will begin in week 1 of Term Two. If you are interested in receiving the Sacraments of Initiation and would like to enrol or know more about the programme please contact Sister Seini at [email protected] or Mrs D’Souza at [email protected]. The Sacraments will be conferred on the 15th of August at the Marist Day Mass.
