MARITZBURG COLLEGE

Providing a balanced, internationally competitive education for each of our boys

Jacques Kallis popped in to see how his young protégés were getting on. Maritzburg College is one of four schools in South Africa that Jacques has identified as a leading cricket school. As a result, his Foundation provides an annual bursary to a promising young cricketer. Pictured with Jacques are recipients, Kurtlyn Mannikam, Sohail Mahmoud, Matthew Dicks (2012) and Randall Ramnarain. SA U19 cricketer, Calvin Savage, who is in matric, was writing exams.

The Form 5 Economics Tour to JohannesburgThe Form 5 Economics Tour to JohannesburgThe Form 5 Economics Tour to JohannesburgThe Form 5 Economics Tour to Johannesburg On Sunday 25 September a group of 21 form 5 young men accompanied by two members of the Economics Department left for Johannesburg to experience what the Gautengers would call “the economic hub of the country”. A very busy five days were spent in Johannesburg experiencing first-hand what makes the economy tick and the challenges facing those making it tick over. A number of Maritzburg College old boys were visited and they inspired the boys to reach for new heights. The group visited old boys at MICROmega Holdings (linking up with Stuart Hill and Andrew Hay), Rand Merchant Bank (Simon Fifield and the inimitable John Elliott), the Constitutional Court (hosted by Jon Buxton Forman), Nedbank (Mike Brown and George Kerby), Bridge Shipping Logistics (Colin Emanuel) and Kaelo Media (Kelvin Watt). Other highlights included a visit (non-tasting) to Halewood International (bottlers of Red Square), the Gautrain Head Office (Bombela Concessions), Chilli Bush Communications, the construction site of the additions to Marble Arch, the new concept eco-friendly/ low carbon footprint store Pick ‘n Pay on Nicol and Investment Cars where Mkhululi Bandezi experienced the adrenalin rush of a trip in a car most will only dream about! The last evening was spent in the great company of MICROmega at The Grill Room in Atholl. A weary (but definitely much more Afro-optimistic) group of young men returned to Maritzburg College on Thursday 29 Septmber with no doubt a few changes to their intended career options and their sights set firmly on greater things. JSE Prize giving Maritzburg College has once again left their (financial) mark in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange Liberty Schools Challenge with two teams being placed in the top 5 in the country. This is a huge achievement as close on 1 800 teams take part in this challenge every year. The teams, together with economics teachers Charles Coghlan and Jean van Heeswijk, flew up to Johannesburg to attend the awards ceremony on 28 October. The awards ceremony is always a wonderful experience and the group once again had a day to remember. Genius Investors, consisting of Yusuf Mahomed, Andries Hattingh, Vishaal Singh and Keyoolin Padayachee were placed second in the Equity game. Super Heroes in Training (Meshaylin Pillay, Haroon Asmall and Nadim Nyker) were placed fourth in the Equity game.

CRICKET 1st XI Match Report College vs Hilton (Away) (Limited to 50 overs) With the Hilton main oval in a state of disrepair, the game was moved up on to the Weightman-Smith field and a damp outfield greeted the teams. Hilton won the toss and predictably chose to bat first, something College would have chosen to do had they won the toss. The speed combination of Calvin Savage and Daryn Dupavillon up front, and capable backup bowlers in the form of Reegan Smith, Andy Charters and the spin of Grant Glutz would prove too much for the home side to handle. Savage struck in his second over (11/1) after which the Hilton second wicket put on 34 runs before Smith sent Mukansi packing for 21 scored off 44 balls.(45/2 after 14 overs). Charters then removed van Wymeersch and Fainsinger within three overs of one another to have Hilton on 71/4 after 21 overs. Hilton captain, Shield, in the mean time had been given a chance with his score on 30 but Curran at the other end was undone by Smith with the total on 97/5 after 28 overs. Savage back for a second spell was too quick for Morris who capitulated for 7 and shortly thereafter Shield was castled by Charters for a scratchy 50. (128/7 after 36 overs). Dupavillon re-entered the attack and knocked over Negri and Pfaff with consecutive deliveries to reduce Hilton to 137/9 after 40 overs. Savage then trapped Futshane in front with the second ball of his 9th over to see Hilton back in the pavilion for a paltry 143 after 42,2 overs. The College bowling had been outstanding and simply too good for Hilton to handle in conditions that favoured the batsmen! The College bowling figures are worth mentioning with Savage (8,2-1-20-3), Dupavillon (8-2-28-2), Smith (9-2-37-2) and Charters (7-2-24-3) having been the pick of the attack.

CANOEING The Maritzburg College Canoeing Club participated in the 10 lap Enduro held at Blue Lagoon on Saturday. This was the final event of the inter-schools canoeing season and saw approximately fifty four-man teams competing in a relay format in Durban. The College u18a team of D. Wewege, M. Dundas-Starr, J. Speed and M. Haw led from start to finish, winning by a comfortable margin over the next schools team which was the College u16a crew of L. Hattingh, A. Woodgate, D. Stamp and D. Spies. The event was followed by the final prize giving ceremony of the season: D. Wewege was announced as the u18 Victor Ludorum and L. Hattingh the u16 Victor Ludorum - a commendable performance considering these boys both have another year in their respective age groups. College were also announced as the inter-schools champions for 2011 for the sixth consecutive year, comfortably ahead of second placed Michaelhouse.

After lunch Kewan Harries and Josh Rencken opened the innings for College and added 36 runs in 10 overs before Rencken (15 off 31 balls) walked past a Pfaff delivery to be bowled by the off spin bowler. Gareth Orr joined Harries and the two College men then proceeded to entertain the sprinkling of spectators with some sublime stroke play against everything that Hilton could offer in the form of an attack. Harries (67* off 77 balls including 10 fours) and Orr (53* off 44 balls including 8 fours) dispatched balls to the boundary with gay abandon to see their team home, by 9 wickets, in the 26th over! An interesting statistic would reflect that in two games against Hilton in 2011, College had scored 403 runs in 75 overs for the loss of just two wickets! In the two encounters, Harries (126* and 67*) and Orr (104* and 53*) had been thorns in the Hilton side. Hilton 143/10 in42.2 overs (C.Savage 3/20; A.Charters 3/24) College 144/1 in 25.2 overs (K.Harries 67*; G.Orr 53*) College won by 9 wickets

MCOBA Hi Linda, thanks for setting things up for me to contact and meet with Craig, what a lovely natured guy. He graciously found time to fit us in for a "College Old Boys in NZ "photo shoot before going off to watch the Bronze Final. He suggested meeting at the Auckland Viaduct which has been RWC 2011 Party Central for festivities around the World Rugby Cup. We met outside the Soul Bar, Harbour View Avenue, Auckland Harbour ,Viaduct which was also the setting for the America's Cup some years ago. Kind regards Athol Potterill (NZ) Photo courtesy of Stacey Potterill (NZ)

BOARDER FUND RAISING EVENT What a wonderful response we had to the boarder fundraiser held on Tuesday evening at the Barnyard Theatre in Durban! With close to a sell out crowd at the performance of “The Final Countdown” we surpassed our expectations and our target for the event. A huge thank you to the enthusiastic parents, friends and family of Maritzburg College who all partied for the benefit of our boarders. We have managed to raise over R25 000.00 which will go a long way in assisting us with the completion of new curtains and soft furnishings for Hudson and Clarke House. Special thanks to Karen Yeoman of SURE AQUABAY TRAVEL who donated a 7 day break to Paradise Beach Lodge, Pomene, Mozambique. The lucky winner of this prize was Heather Tallis – a guest at the Rencken table. Megan Hendrie donated a gorgeous L’Oreal hamper that was won by Lee Dixie. Our prize winners were delighted with their prizes! An extra special thanks also to Shellee and Dave Commons who kindly donated the fabric that will be used for the new curtaining in the boarding houses.
