CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE:

1. Ergonomic Health and Safety. Dr. Benden holds 21 US Patents for current ergonomic, health and industrial

products and have many US and Int’l patents pending in other fields. Many of my early designs were breakthroughs

in the field of ergonomics and are now industry standards that have been deployed in millions of units of products

sold that have helped countless people to be more comfortable, productive and safe while performing their work. The

estimated lifetime value of these inventions has been estimated to be over $1 Billion.

2. Stand-Biased Desk Interventions in Children. Since becoming a professor in 2008, Dr. Benden has focused his

academic research on his theory of Technology Induced Inactivity on both children and adults and the manner in

which our sedentary lifestyles are increasingly influencing poor health outcomes.

3. Stand-biased Desk Interventions in Adults. Dr. Benden’s work also focuses on addressing sedentarianism and the

impact on health among adults. Benden’s Paradox states: Adults naturally increase their BMI during their working

career and thereby their need for sustained physical activity to minimize the trajectory of that increase. Ironically,

they unnaturally are coerced to decrease their physical activity in the work environment via forced sedentarianism to

gain productivity, which results in reduced productivity and weight gain.

4. Technology Advancements in Physical Activity and Caloric Expenditure Measurement. Dr. Benden has

consistently pushed the field of wearable monitoring for Physical Activity to new methods, techniques and tools by

developing and testing new sensors in this space. His work with children in schools is considered seminal work in the

field.

5. Advances in Industry Standards. Dr. Benden’s research has resulted in the development of the ANSI/BIFMA

X6.1-2012 Educational Seating Standard, the improvement of the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2012 Seating Standard and the

creation of the ANSI/BIFMA X5.11 Large Occupant Office Seating Standard along with his contributions to the

ANSI/HFES 100 Computer Workstation Standard as a committee member. In simple terms, if you have sat in chair

at school or work, and/or used a desk in school or at work, you have been touched by products, influenced by,

patented by, cited in patents related to, influenced by policies determined through or tested to standards driven

by Dr. Benden’s research. This is a true measure of public health impact when nearly everyone you know has had

contact with the tangible results of products made better by your research.
