Market dynamics – European market, week 8

Markets are gloomy, with very high prices for pineapple and avocado and low prices for other most commonly traded products such as grapes, capsicum, strawberries and cherry-tomato. Asparagus – The offer from Peru is supposedly scarce as the number of registered occurrences has been very small in the last weeks; the product is often not quoted or quoted upon request and the price range for this origin showed unusually large. Asparagus from Mexico are on the market. Avocado – Available volumes are relatively low due to the problems caused by the weather in Israel and Spain but the demand has not been very active. Prices are high and firm in the hass segment where Kenya (prices in line with the other non-Mediterranean origins) and Peru (very small volumes and large price range) are on the market. Prices have continued to increase in the green segment where the season begins for fuerte from Brazil and is almost over for pinkerton from Israel and reed from Spain. The market is expected to remain balanced until mid-March. Berries – The blueberry season from Chile is quite advanced and the weekly shipments started to decrease in week 7; up to week 5, shipments from Chile reached a similar figure to the total volume sent during season 2013/14, campaign on which the volumes decreased due to frosts occurred in September 2013. Prices are relatively low but better than last year at this time of the season. Beans – Prices are relatively firm, with narrower price range for the West African product origins. Ginger – Prices remain above the average but lowered in comparison to the peaks registered in 2014; the price range is large particularly in the case of the Chinese product. Grapes – Low prices and low sales, helped by promotional activities. Quality and supply are pretty good, with large availabilities of Peruvian

and South African grapes, but volumes on the market are too big. The near early finish for South African grapes due to unprecedented early harvesting may nevertheless lead to a strong end of the season. Slightly better prices for white seedless varieties at the end of the month, still largely below those registered in 2014. The first Indian grapes are on the market.

Kaki – End of the marketing season for sharon fruits from Israel.

Kiwi – The season is likely to finish at 646.000 tons (+6%) with forecasts of a strong end of the season because only 30% of the European production rest to be sold. The Southern Hemisphere production will be below the full potential because of the damages caused by the weather in 2014 in Chile (170.000 tons expected instead of 200.000) as well as in New Zealand (hails last November and orchards conversion into new varieties, with expectations nevertheless favourable: 70 million boxes for green and 30 million boxes for gold kiwi fruits).

Lime – Prices remained low during the last weeks and the price range narrowed in comparison to the last mentioned occurrences. Volumes are expected to diminish as the supply from Brazil should decrease and arrivals from Mexico will finish in two weeks starting again in May.

Lychee – The season from the Indian Ocean region is practically over; the price for sea-freighted Madagascan lychees stabilised at 1,50 Euro/kg at the end of the season while the South African fruits, even though presenting a large price range, continued with considerably higher prices (2,00-3,00 Euro/kg). Small volumes from Honduras are on the market while the arrivals from Thailand are expected in April. Mango – Prices have been on average or above the average but got lower at the end of the month and does not prove firm. The volumes shipped by Peru have been small in

comparison to the last record year but at the same level of 2012-2013. The price range is sometimes unusually large, with mid sizes obtaining the highest quotations. Small number of registered occurrences for mangoes from Ecuador. Melons – Prices for cantaloupes and galia melons are oscillating frequently while for hdw and piel de sapo are stable; quotations for watermelons continue particularly high in comparison to last year. Papaya – Low prices because of big production volumes in Brazil. Passion fruit – Volumes from Kenya are small due to the lack of rains and arrivals from Zimbabwe are expected in the coming weeks; Israel is on the market with increasing volumes and higher prices in comparison to the other product origins. Pineapple – Arrivals have been very small in February, standing at about 20% the volumes sent last year in the same part of the year

(producers in Costa Rica practically stopped harvesting because of the very low prices obtained during the season). Prices are extremely high, also because of the delays of some vessels and strongly oscillating depending on customers. Volumes are forecasted to remain low until Easter. Pommegranate – First arrivals of air-freighted fruits from India and Peru.

Stone fruits – Small volumes allowed good sales of peaches and nectarines at the beginning of the month; sales lowered in week 7 but remained enough to move stocks even though prices are not exciting. Plums sales have been sufficient and consistent with the available volumes but the demand is quite limited and prices decreased in comparison to those registered in January; quality problems (internal browning) for some Chilean lots.

Mid-year holidays have not favoured sales in the second part of the month in Central European markets.
