A few less than in recent weeks with butchers’ type cattle selling extremely well. More commercial cattle continue to sell well and are in demand. A trio of cattle all hitting the top mark this week at 218p/kg, a Charolais heifer from Mr. W.J.P. Julian of Summercourt selling to Chris Dale, Butcher of Helston; and a Limousin x steer and heifer from Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth bought by Trevarthens of Roskrow & Peter Morris Butchers of St. Columb respectively.

Just a handful of OTMs saw a premium of 168p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus x steer from Mr. W.C. Bottrell of Sancreed bought by Roger Eddy of Tehidy. Also for Mr. Bottrell, a Friesian steer selling well at 162p/kg and £1,019 to David Ellis of Lelant.

Cull cow numbers remain short but buyers are looking for cows which has improved prices and overall averages. Both beef and dairy in demand, especially well-covered cows, topping at 119p/kg and £946 for a South Devon x cow for Messrs. D. Trewern & Son of St. Levan. On the dairy side, a nice entry from S.D. James & Co. of Summercourt including a Swedish Red & White x alongside the Friesians saw two sell away at 98p/kg.

This first “Orange” Market in the New Year saw a fair entry which met a strong trade for all on offer.

A good entry of big, well-covered Friesian cows, including a super run from Messrs. D.C. & W.A. Thomas of Tresillian with many 800kg+ sold to a premium of 109p/kg, and a top value of £885 for an 894kg cow, both bought by Trevarthens of Roskrow. A Hereford bull from the same farm selling well at 97p/kg and £1,064 to David Ellis of Lelant.

A light entry of store cattle this week which sold to a strong trade to a good contingent of buyers in attendance. Leading at £975 was an 18mo Limousin x steer for Mr. R.P. Forway of Threemilestone who also had top heifer at £865, with a younger pair from the same farm including a 13 month old steer at £790. An entry of young 6/7 month old British Blue crosses for Messrs. W.J.A. & S.J. Hain of Four Lanes with the trio of heifers selling at £435 and steer £535.

A similar entry of calves to recent weeks met a continued firm trade for all on offer. Topping at £250 was a cracking 23 day old Limousin x bull calf from Mr. M.J. Brown of Scorrier. A super bunch of 5-week old dairy calves from Mr. P. Johns of North Cliffs met a whopping trade with a Swedish Red x and pair of Friesian bulls all at £200, also leading the heifers with a British Blue x at £245, and Aberdeen Angus x heifer £200.

A mixed entry of finished hogs saw a two-tier trade. Strong demand and lively prices for the well-covered hogs, in contrast to the under-finished types which were more difficult to place. Topping at £92 was a smart pen of 46.6kg Charollais x hogs from Mr. S.C.R. Brake of Mawgan Porth purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Half a dozen pens realising over £2/kg with a top of 205p/kg for two producers, firstly for handyweight Texel x hogs from P.C.J. Farming of Breage selling to J.V. Richards Ltd. Also achieving top average and purchased by Trevarthens were 42.2kg hogs from one of three good pens for Messrs. P.T.R. & P.E. Jones & Son of Crantock.

FARM DISPERSAL SALE REPORT
Lodge & Thomas carried out a farm machinery dispersal sale on Wednesday 23rd January at Truro Livestock Market on behalf of the late Peter Sidebotham. The items were removed to Truro Market for security and ease of sale. For the first sale of the year there was a large crowd in attendance with the sale laid out partly in the Sale Room and partly outdoors.
The highlight of the sale was a 1960 Massey Ferguson 35 3-cylinder tractor (above) which had not been off the farm from new and realised £3,075. The other International Harvester 434 2wd tractor with loader which was a non-runner realised £1,175.
Other notable items were 7’ car trailer £270, 5’ topper £210, GP Engineering linkbox £235, Massey Ferguson cultivator £130, Stihl petrol disc cutter £310, IAE feed bin £120, granite mushroom £105 and field gates to £65.
