Public Broadcasting has long been one of the primary media for our community here in Southern Colorado; the Rocky Mountain Public Broadcasting System has been a part of our community for 56 years and has always been free to the public. Being a non-profit organization, RMPBS depends on donations and government support to stay in operation, and earlier this year, RMPBS received the largest gift in their 56-year history; a building located in Colorado Springs, worth around $1.3 million, which was donated by the Gill Foundation. It will be renamed Tim Gill Center for Public Media, and will be used as a community meeting place and office by Rocky Mountain PBS.

Historically the building was built as two separate structures, one being a horse barn from the end of the 19th century and the other being a tire station built in 1925. In 1986, real estate developer Tom Hudson bought the whole complex and planned to rent it out as an office and retail space. Over the years, the building ended up being used for public community meetings and as a space for 21 non-profit organizations throughout Colorado.

Rocky Mountain PBS intends to keep the Tim Gill Center for Public Media as a space for community meetings and public activism, and is free to use Monday through Friday from 8am-5pm. If youd like to support the new Center, you can become a member of your community radio station or donate to Rocky Mountain PBS here.

The commitment by Rocky Mountain PBS to maintain free public meeting space for non-profits was also compelling. We knew what this space has meant to the community as a place to gather, have dialogue, and work together to build a better Colorado Springs and a better Colorado, said Tim Sweeney, Gill Foundation President and CEO.

Caspian Caf: Even the Mushrooms are Good!

A few weeks ago, my husband Karl and I celebrated our fourth anniversary by treating ourselves to a dinner at Caspian Caf. It was our first visit to the restaurant. It will definitely not be the last.

Mo, the owner of Caspian Caf, greeted us at the door, giving us each a hug and, to my delight, an Old World-style kiss on the cheek. now, dont get me wrong: I dont typically enjoy unsolic-ited affection from strangers. When an exuberant gent from the Mediterranean welcomes you to his establishment as if youre part of the family, however, you cannot help but be utterly charmed.

The atmosphere of Caspian Caf invites intimate conversation with friends or lovers. Our waiter was unfailingly polite and at-tentive without being intrusive. I was very impressed with the wait staff in general. They circulated through the room quietly, taking care to avoid interrupting conversations.

Our food (falafel for me; spicy shrimp linguine with mushrooms and eggplant for the hubby) was incredible. I have had an intense hatred for mushrooms my whole life, but Karl talked me into eating one. And I liked it. I actually ate, and enjoyed, a mushroom for the first time in my existence.

By the end of the evening, Caspian Caf had earned two more longtime customers. Try it yourselfyoull become one, too.

It has been one year since I sat in the witness box testifying on behalf of my older sister. My sister, always happy, generous, spiritual, and caring, is now an incapacitated adult and I am her legal guardian.

Like so many aging adults, my sister struggled through failing mental health while living hundreds of miles from her support systemchildren, sisters, nephews and nieces. The distance clouded the families understanding of the mental and physical decline of our matriarch. Because we only spoke on the phone every couple of weeks, we didnt catch the problems that were surfacingloneliness, isola-tion, inability to manage financial decisions, and her outreach to strangers who became friends. Looking back at the past few years, I now can piece together these abuse signals that I didnt recognize along the way.

Elder abuse is something that most of us believe occurs in families who are impoverished and un-educatedcertainly not our family! My discover-ies around decisions that my sister made have raised my awareness on what easy prey seniors are. Abusive relationships are manifested by the global mobility of our families in todays society. Without oversight of those who love us most, we turn to complete strangers for validation and support. This was my sisters story.

Having traveled out of state for a legal matter, she experienced a traumatic head injury which triggered a grand mal seizure. Rushed to an out of town hos-pital, she spent several days in intensive care and when released, had a heart pacemaker with a defi-brillator. She was warned not to drive or live alone until the ramifications of this device were better known. It was autumn in Indiana and she decided to visit friends for a few weeks before returning to southern Florida for the winter.

Weeks turned into months and friends changed until I heard she was staying with new friends who she just met. My skeptical nature engaged immediately! Few new friends invite a fairly unwell, older woman to stay indefinitely with them. It turned out these folks were classic perpetrators who entangled my sister into their lives, isolating her from her family and friends. By late springtime, I discovered that the new friend was now her Power of Attorney and Temporary Guardian. He had legal oversight over her finances, lawsuits, even had begun new suits against her ex-husband and his family business. This evil man stood to become very wealthy off my sister as her health deteriorated!

It has taken over two years of legal battling, thou-sands of personal dollars, and the support of hundreds of co-workers, Adult Protective Services, family members, and friends to reach the safe place my sister is currently in. It literally required a cast of hundreds to fight one bad man! Our society understands child abuse and domestic abuse, but not abuse against our aging population. I promise to spend whatever time I have left to live educating communities on the insidious nature of elder abuse. none of us are exempt!

If a loved one begins to show signs of changing personality traits, develops new relationships or behaviors unlike lifelong ones, please reach out for help. In Colorado Springs, agencies like the De-partment of Human Services and Adult Protective Services can help assess a seniors situation. The Colorado Springs Police Department can be called in an emergency. Ask for help dont let a perpetra-tor victimize your family!

Q: When should my child use toothpaste and how much should they really use? A: Start your child off with non-fluoridated toothpaste as soon as they can use a brush. After they learn to spit out the toothpaste, usually around 3 years of age, they can be switched to toothpaste with fluoride. Only the tops of the bristles should be covered with paste.

Q: Im interested in changing the shapes of my teeth. What options are available? A: Several options are available, and depend on what kind of change you are trying to make, as well as how long the procedure will take and cost. Dental bonding: a durable resin is applied to the tooths surface and a special light used to harden it. Crowns: a cap placed over the entire tooth and cemented into place. Veneers: wafer-thin, custom-made shell placed over the front of the tooth and cemented into place. Recontouring: reshapes the tooth by removing bits of enamel.

Q: Ive been thinking about starting Invisalign but Im not sure if I understand how the process works. A: Over the course of the treatment, you are supplied with a series of plastic aligners. Each aligner is custom made to gradually change the position of your teeth. They are made for your specific situation and mapped out by your doctor.

Bucket Lists and Bo JanglesBy andrea Jones

During a recent visit to Scales n Tails Exotic Reptile Pet Shop, I had the opportunity to cross off one of the items on my bucket list (things I want to do in my lifetime). But first, let me tell you a little about this fascinating store.

Scales n Tails has everything from tiny geckos to largish turtles, snakes and even pythons. The store also has frogs for all the amphibian fans out there. And of course, Scales n Tails carries all the supplies your scaly friends require.

One of the best things about the store is Mr. Bo Jangles, a Black-Throated Monitor Lizard who was wandering around the store during my visit. The 4-foot long reptilian behe-moth is surprisingly docile, even in the arms of a child.

But it was the snakes that interested me the most. Snakes are unique creatures. Their skins are smooth, shimmery and cool to the touch. Theyre great, low-maintenance petsbeautiful to look at and interesting to watch. Which brings me to my bucket list: Thanks to my visit to Scales n Tails, I had the unique and strangely exhilarating experi-ence of having a python draped around my neck. (It was like wearing a heavy, lazy scarf that doesnt collect lint.)

Scales n Tails is worth a visit just to see the incredible animals and Mr. Bo Jangles. You may even find your new best friend there.

Draft snakes: The u.S. Department of Energy estimates that drafts caused by gaps between your door and door frame can waste 5% to 30% of your energy use. There is an easy fix, though: Roll up a towel and place it at the bottom of the door.

Change your furnace filters: Dirty filters restrict airflow and force you to crank up the heat. Replace your filters at the beginning of the cold season and once a month throughout. People who suffer from allergies will discover an added benefit: Clean filters catch allergens, pollen and pet dander, so be sure to replace them regularly for wheeze-free respiration.

Reverse your ceiling fans: Warm air rises, and cold air sinks, so the heat coming from your heater vents will drift upwards and stay there. Luckily, ceiling fans are equipped with a handy little switch to reverse the blade rotation, forcing warm air back down where you want it. A fireplace with a blower and a ceiling fan running in reverse can heat large living areas, not to mention giving your pets a cozy spot to curl up on the floor.

Install storm windows and doors: Colorado Springs is famous (or infamous if you prefer) for year-round high winds that turn downright frigid in the winter. Storm

doors and windows are specifically designed to seal drafts and reduce leaks. Remember what your parents always used to say and quit paying to heat the outdoors!

Plastic wrapnot just for leftovers: A cheap alternative to storm windows can be found at your local hardware store. For just a few bucks, you can pick up a window insulation kit. The plastic sheets are easily installed with a hair dryer, and boosts your homes ability to retain heat.

Turn the heat down: Theres no reason to keep your furnace running at a comfortable 72 degrees when no one is home. If you cant remember to turn down the temperature on your way out the door, spend a few bucks on a programmable thermostat.

Turn down your water heater temp: Lowering your water heater temperature from 140 degrees F to 120 degrees F can reduce your water heating energy costs by 6%-10%. Youll feel the difference in your wallet, but not your daily hot shower.
