Courvoisier launches luxury fragrances
Courvoisier is the latest spirits brand to turn drinking into a multi-sensory experience, with the launch of two luxury gift packs containing two
bespoke fragrances designed to evoke the Paris of the Belle Époque.
The scents are called ‘Brise de Vincennes’ (the breeze from Vincennes) and ‘Nuit Debordante’ (heady night), and are intended to conjure the
aromas of the French capital during the daytime and night-time respectively at the turn of the twentieth century.
Each of the two Celebration Sensorielle gift boxes contains a 70cl teardrop-shaped bottle of Courvoisier, either XO or Initiale Extra, and a
Courvoisier brand book with tasting notes and historical information. The XO version (rsp: £190) contains 20 miniature fragranced aroma cones, 10
of each flavour, while the Initiale Extra version (rsp: £397) has two fragranced candles.

Food sales fall for the first time this year
UK food sales fell for the first time this year during July, according to the latest figures from the BRC-
KPMG Retail sales monitor.
While it will not reveal the specific figures for July, overall for the three month from May to July total
food sales were up just 0.1%.
Overall UK retail sales increased 1.2% on a like-for-like basis from July 2014, when they had decreased 0.3% on the preceding year. On a total basis, sales
were up 2.2% on July 2014.
Non-food sales grew 3.7% over the same period.
“July began with a heatwave and strong food sales but the rest of the month was colder and wetter than average and July’s overall performance disappointed after a run of more encouraging months,” said IGD
chief executive Joanne Denney-Finch.

Morrisons launches ‘Milk for Farmers’ premium line
Morrisons will launch a new milk brand this autumn which will guarantee that 10 pence per litre of the retail price will go directly to
dairy farmers.
The new ‘Morrisons Milk for Farmers’ brand will go on sale at a premium of around 23.7p per SKU (based on today’s retail price of 89p for a four-pinter) or around £1.13, and will sit alongside standard-price
Morrisons own-brand milk in the dairy aisle.
The announcement comes on the back of a turbulent week for the retailer, which has borne the brunt of farmer protests over a collapse in
farmgate and retail prices for milk with a wave of ‘milk trolley challenges’ – where farmers cleared milk aisles and gave away milk to
shoppers.

VAT row sees customers refuse to show boarding passes
Treasury ministers have called for shops at airports to pass on VAT savings to customers.
Passengers are asked to hand over their boarding passes so retailers can identify who is flying to non-EU
countries and avoid paying 20% VAT on customers’ purchases.
It was reported by The Independent that stores including Boots and WH Smiths were failing to pass on
the VAT savings.

Action on Consumer Choice launches anti-regulation website
Consumers demanding the right to eat, drink, smoke and vape without excessive interference from politicians and
public health campaigners have set up a website defending their rights.
The Action on Consumer Choice online platform aims to raise awareness around legislation and proposals that restrict
people’s right to consumer.
Launched by Simon Clark, director of the smokers’ group Forest which manages the Action on Consumer Choice
campaign, the website will also feature news and commentary.
Clark insisted it was time to put consumer choice and personal responsibility back on the political agenda.

Supermarkets manufacturing food is ‘a real threat’
Food and drink business failures are on the increase and supermarket plans to bring more manufacturing in-house could
make the food industry even more cut-throat.
Some of the leading supermarkets are considering establishing or acquiring their own manufacturing facilities, in order to
further increase their control of the supply chain, according to Grant Thornton.
“This is a model that Morrisons has led the way on to date, and could be the nail in the coffin for many food manufacturers,
particularly the more vulnerable smaller players,” Trefor Griffith, head of food and beverage at the accountancy firm, told
FoodManufacture.co.uk.
This would compound the pressure food manufacturers were already under from the supermarkets, which were squeezing
margins in order to win back customers from the discounters, he said.

Biodegradable and recyclable bags should be free, shoppers say
Almost two thirds of shoppers believe that biodegradable and recyclable bags should be provided free of charge and therefore become exempt from the
plastic bag levy, a YouGov survey had discovered.
Of more than 2,000 polled, 98% reuse their plastic carriers either as bin liners or for other uses around the
home, the findings showed.
And 59% declared they would prefer to shop at supermarkets which provide biodegradable and recyclable plastic bags, according to Symphony
Environmental Technologies which commissioned the research.
