Each day, Director of Marketing & Communications Dotty Karkheck guides the many methods that Jackson College communicates with its communities. For her commitment, Karkheck was recently recognized by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations as the 2018 Petrizzo Career Service Award Winner!
Karkheck began her career at Jackson College in 2002, bringing years of experience in marketing, publishing and graphic design. Jets softball team ranked among top 20 nationallyMarch 21, 2018
Coming off a strong spring break trip to Florida last week, the Jackson College Jets women’s softball team is nationally ranked in the top 20 of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Softball Rankings, at no. 18.
The Jets went 9-1 on their Florida trip, with the offense scoring 93 runs including 11 home runs by seven different players. The team beat the currently ranked Madison College. The offense was led by freshman Brooke Garbarino, a catcher and outfielder from Livonia, who hit .484 on the trip with three home runs, a grand slam and 20 runs batted in. Jets pitching was stellar all around and was led by the freshman Allison LaPoint (6-0), from Holland, Ohio, who left Florida on a 12-inning scoreless streak. In LaPoint’s last four games of the trip, she threw 21 scoreless innings out of 23.
“I knew going into Florida that we would do well and win some games, but I did not expect us to be 9-1,) said Jamie Vandenburgh, head coach. ‘We played better competition this year than we have in the past, but the girls were ready for it and played hard. The best part of the trip was seeing the team play or each other and support one another. Our

centerfielder made a diving catch to end a game that had been a little back and forth, and the entire team sprinted to the outfield! They were excited about their teammate. It was something awesome to see!”
This year’s team is a unique group of only four sophomores and 14 freshmen.
“The sophomores have stepped up and filled an upperclassmen role,” Vandenburgh said. “They keep the team engaged and focused both on and off the field. All sophomores are filling starting roles and proving why they should be on the field.”
After working out hard over the winter with a new strength coach and being focused during hitting sessions, the team has set some high goals for the season. “I am excited to see this season play out and hope that we can continue rolling forward,” Vandenburgh said.
(Note: The home opener that had been set for Thursday, March 22 has been canceled.). _________________________________

Local graduate Daniels to coach bowling teamsMarch 8, 2018
Jackson College is pleased to announce Corey Daniels is the bowling coach for the new men’s and women’s bowling teams.
Daniels, a veteran bowler of over 17 years, is a graduate of Northwest High School where he bowled for four years. He continued his studies at Grand Valley State University for business administration, and also bowled there and was vice president of the bowling club. He returned to Northwest to coach varsity bowling for the past four years. Today he manages Suburban Lanes bowling alley on Ann Arbor Road, owned by his parents, Ron and Cindy Daniels.
Jackson College Athletic Director Heather Bateman had approached Daniels about Suburban Lanes being the host site for the new College bowling program. He became interested in the position through their discussion and applied for the post. “I’m very excited,” he said. “It’s been difficult to stay quiet about it! It’s been an exciting time.”
Jackson is a popular bowling community, and the State of Michigan is the number one state for high school bowlers in the nation. So, it’s very fitting that Jackson College offer a bowling program, Daniels said. There is a great deal of talent in Jackson and the surrounding areas.
“The talent level here in Jackson is very good, and in the surrounding areas, a 30- to 45-mile radius, there are several champions and team state champions. I think we can be really competitive on a college level. With the talent that is around here, I feel we can be competitive our first year.”
The bowling season runs through the winter, from December to March. The College will also be hiring an assistant coach, and Daniels will begin recruiting for the teams soon._________________________________

Smiles all around! New dental hygiene program approvedMarch 7, 2018
Jackson College is pleased to announce that a new dental hygiene program has received approval from the Commission on Dental Accreditation to launch this fall semester, 2018!
Plans for a new dental hygiene program began after concerns were raised about a shortage of registered dental hygienists to fill present and future job openings in the tri-county area. Dental hygiene is a growing field with great career opportunities. Also, local students pursuing the dental program through the Career Centers now have the opportunity to stay in our community to pursue their associate degree in dental hygiene.
“I am excited about the launching of Jackson College’s first dental hygiene program which is designed to better serve our community and our students,” said Dr. Daniel J. Phelan, Jackson College president. “Special thanks go to our Board of Trustees and Dr. Ed Mathein in particular, as well as Program Director Pat Guenther, for making this program and its accreditation possible. We are also excited about our ability to equip the lab with funding from The Community College Skilled Trades Equipment Program (CCSTEP). We are thrilled to welcome students to yet another career program at Jackson College.”
Dental hygienists clean teeth, examine patients for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis and provide other preventive dental care. Employment is expected to grow 10.7 percent nationally, so this in-demand career promises a bright future. Ongoing research linking oral health to general health spurs demand for preventive dental services, which dental hygienists provide. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health.

“Our students will be graduating with an Associate in Applied Science degree in dental hygiene, which permits them to sit for all board exams necessary to get their dental hygiene license in Michigan or any state,” said Guenther. “I’ve had many students come to see me about enrolling in the program; there’s a lot of interest.”
Jackson College has been developing the program and curriculum for about a year now, and in October 2017 submitted a self-study for consideration of accreditation. The Commission sent site visitors to the College to assess the program’s compliance with the accreditation standards. The associate degree program will be a second-admit program, similar to nursing and other health careers, where students begin with prerequisites and then apply for admission to the dental hygiene program. Enrollment is limited to 10 students.
“For the College and community, we will have a dental hygiene clinic offering preventive services will be open to the public, with students as the clinicians. That will start in 2019,” Guenther said, referring to the lab in Justin Whiting Hall. “We’re looking forward to partnering with the dental community, especially the Center for Family Health, and getting out there in the community. This will be a great addition to the College.”

New Countywide Jackson County Early College Launches with Kickoff on March 8March 1, 2018
JACKSON, Michigan — The community is invited to celebrate the launch of an exciting new educational opportunity for Jackson County students: The Jackson County Early College (JCEC). The brief kickoff event will be held on Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Bert Walker Hall, rooms 144 & 145, on the Central campus of Jackson College.
The new JCEC is open to students in every public high school in Jackson County and is designed to guide students beyond traditional dual enrollment (in which students select their own college courses) toward a career path and formal program of study. As early as ninth grade, students can begin taking classes on campus at Jackson College and get a head start on working towards an associate degree, certification, or credential.
JCEC students will see significant cost savings for their education compared to most traditional college students, with much of the expense covered by the home district.
“The Jackson County Early College (JCEC) program represents a transformational shift in education for the children of Jackson County,” said Jeff Beal, superintendent of Jackson Public Schools. “This shift moves from a traditional K-12 approach to a much more robust K-14 pathway that will be tailored for every child to find their way from the classroom to a career.”
JCEC is designed as a Universal Entry/Universal Exit model whereby students can begin their college education as early as their freshman year and stay all the way through year 13. This offers a maximum of 60 credits at a small fraction of the cost.
The concept of Universal Exit allows students the flexibility to leave the program at any time up to or before the end of their 13th year, provided they are meeting State of Michigan high school graduation requirements. Students can choose how intensive their pathway will be, as some will begin with just a few exploratory courses, while others can choose a more robust pathway which can yield a completed associate degree by the end of year 13.
“This is an inclusive program designed to encourage students from all backgrounds to earn college credits, a degree, or a certification; and be prepared for a meaningful and successful career in the community,” said Jean Logan, Jackson County Early College Administrator. “One of our desired outcomes is ‘community retention’ – creating a workforce that will remain in the area to support the growing economic base. The potential to impact Jackson County’s business community in meeting its workforce needs is substantial.”
Under the guidance of counselors and dedicated program director, Logan, students can apply now to the program, and begin planning to attend Jackson College classes in the fall of 2018.
For more information on the JCEC, please contact [email protected] or speak with your local high school counselor._________________________________
