(Year 3)
I was glad to have a chance to go to
Germany for an exchange internship for a
cultural project in the summer of 2011. I
worked at a youth center and a summer
camp for almost 2 months, and my duty was
to help organize different activities about
Hong Kong’s culture and a Global Village
event. As I was travelling outside Asia for
the first time in my life, I was so excited. At
the same time, I was a bit nervous because I
was going all this way to Germany alone.
But I think it was a good time for me to
learn to be independent. So I said to myself,
‘If I think I can, I can!’ It’s an old saying but it
works when I dare to believe it. With that
trust in myself, I was able to take good care
of myself throughout the whole journey.
The project that I was working on was
another challenge, because I had to work
with 12 other interns from different
countries, including Brazil, Egypt, France,
Ghana, Hungary, India, Poland, Russia,
Taiwan, Turkey, U.S.A., Vietnam, and of
course Germany as well. By working with
each other, we developed a better
understanding of different cultures. What is
more, mutual trust and friendship was
fostered among us gradually. This gave me
an amazing opportunity for me to
experience how to work with people with
different cultural backgrounds in the real
world.
Compared to travelling, I think this exchange
internship gives me a longer time to
experience the local culture and to get along
with people from different countries. It is
not only a good chance for me to explore
the world, but it also has a positive impact
on my personal development. So I
encourage my fellow classmates to grasp
every opportunity to go for an exchange
program, no matter an academic or
internship one. I believe it will be a very
memorable and impactful experience for
you.
