As they drove up to the dealership in the Turbo, they saw a beautiful sparkling white 2007 Bentley Arnage T sitting out front. Bob talked Wendy into looking at it and while sitting in it, they were sold. This car actually had cup holders! Not to mention seats front and back that massage you while you motor along. This was quite a change from the Cloud II and the Turbo. So they bought the Arnage and left the Turbo R to be sold by the dealer. Oh, and their friend bought a 2008 Bentley Continental GT convertible, not the Azure. Moral of the story: Beware of doing favors for friends; you may wind up with a new PMC.

Willy HugronChairman’s CornerI would like to thank everyone who participated in the Santa Anita Concours this year and contributed to its great success. It was very well organized and everything went smoothly due to our event hosts Diane and Gary Cerveny. Thanks also to our Chief Judge Tom Mercurio and his wife Terri for coordinating the awards. This year we introduced participation ribbons for our PMCs, which everyone enjoyed and which gave our cars a festive look. The weather was also perfect, not too hot nor cold. A huge thanks to Dr. David Morrison for opening up his private collection of Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts and race cars to our members. David provided us with several guided tours of his cars along with the stories that went with each car. He also narrated a slide presentation about the Ghosts that was very informative. This was a well-attended event that many of us were anxiously waiting to see and definitely surpassed our expectations.

On June 2nd our tech meet “How Did You Do It?” will feature Santos Guerra discussing the complete restoration of his award-winning Bentley. This is a great opportunity to learn what is involved in restoring a classic car from A-to-Z, so please plan on joining us at Tony Handler’s for this informative meet.

Save the date of June 10th for the San Marino Classic Concours. We encourage you to either enter your car or at least attend as a spectator. This event always has some very nice classics. Our club member, Aaron Weiss, is opening his private garage and collection to host a benefit dinner for the Petersen Automotive Museum the evening before the event. Visit the Concours website for more information.

The National RROC meet will be held June 18-24 in Louisville, Kentucky. Several of us are planning on going. If you have never attended a National Meet it is worth the experience and we encourage you to consider making the trip. Make sure you catch up with your local club members while at the meet. E-mail me if you plan on attending and we’ll gather together for some Kentucky bourbon at the meet hotel [email protected]

We have many more interesting events planned for the rest of the year. On July 14th we will be going to the Nethercutt Collection. We anticipate to be sold out for this event since it is so popular, so do not wait until the last minute to sign up or you will be left out.

For September Pierre Lemieux and Harry Clark are planning a Temecula wine tour, while October finds us enjoying a weekend in Santa Barbara. We are actively planning the Annual Fox Hunt for November 18. This is going to be a fun event that will test your driving and detective skills to track and find the fox.

Concours d’Elegance Hosted by Gary and Diane Cerveny, our prestigious Concours d’Elegance was held at Santa Anita Park on April 21st and was an extremely successful event. Forty beautiful cars graced the infield while 98 members, family members and friends enjoyed the sunshine. The delicious barbeque was also held in the infield and attendees sat under umbrellas while enjoying BBQ chicken, southwestern tacos, hot dogs, roast potatoes, various hot and cold salads and to-die-for cookies and cheesecake. The horses were running in fine form and hopefully some members were winners at the races also. Michael Cerveny again designed the car badges commemorating the Concours and they are a beautiful art deco design. Each PMC entered also received a yellow participation ribbon that was displayed on many of the cars. Haley Heerdt, the daughter of Terri and Tom Mercurio, designed the exquisite judging seminar certificates and the award certificates.

The judging teams, led by Chief Judge Tom Mercurio, meticulously inspected the beautiful cars on display and the competition was fierce. A 100 point judging format was used successfully again this year. There were ten judging teams, each led by an experienced judging captain. We want to acknowledge our volunteer judges, without whom the Concours could not be successful:

Pre-War Small HP, Pre-War Large HP, Silver Shadow II, T2 1977-1980 – Captain Ronnie Shaver with judge Steve Butler

Mark VI, R Type, Silver Dawn – Captain David Morrison with judges Dick Bell and Haley Heerdt

Silver Wraith, PIV, PV, PVI. Silver Cloud II, Bentley S2 – Captain Tom Warden with judges Greg Gill and Michael Cerveny

Silver Cloud I, Bentley S1 – Captain Willy Hugron with judge Benoit Gateau-Cumin

Silver Cloud III, Bentley S3 – Captain Bill Cronkhite with judges Tom Holland and Amy Cerveny

Silver Shadow I, Bentley TI, 1965-1976 – Captain Tom Dolan with judge Paul Dailey

Corniche, MPW, Camargue 1966-1995 – Captain Bob Ratinoff with judges Red Tetina and Craig Roberts

Silver Spirit, Spur, Bentley 1980-1989 – Captain Bob Ratinoff with judge Red Tetina

Silver Spirit II, Spur II, Bentley 1990-1999 – Captain Craig Roberts with judge John Luma

Rolls-Royce, Bentley Current 2000-2012 – Captain Karen Perrault with judges Dori Olsen and Joan Hugron

We want to express our sincerest thanks for the generous sponsorship by Ronny’s Garage (that donated a $300 gift certificate for work), Mothers® Polishes, Waxes and Cleaners, Hagerty Classic Car Insurance and Adam Martin for helping to make our Concours a special day.

And now – the Winners! Please see the facing page for a complete listing of the winners.

The Lyon Air Museum Join hosts Robert and Nancy Ratinoff on August 26th for a day of cars, cockpits and camaraderie. We will be visiting the Lyon Air Museum that was established by Major General William Lyon. The Lyon Air Museum captures the remarkable history of World II aviation. The Museum features an operational fleet of historically significant aircraft and authentic exhibits hosted by knowledgeable docents.

After a delicious lunch, we will be visiting the Crevier Classic Cars collection. For nearly 60 years, the Creviers have been involved in the world of automobiles and recognize the importance of preserving them for future generations to enjoy. You can travel back in time at this museum-quality facility and visit car collectors’ treasures. We are looking forward to seeing you at this fascinating event.

The Nethercutt Collection There are car museums and car museums and then there’s the Nethercutt. Starting with the restoration of just two cars in the 1950’s, the Nethercutt collection now showcases more than 130 of the world’s greatest antique, vintage and classic automobiles.

Please plan on joining us July 14th for a fabulous visit to this jewel followed by a lavish buffet brunch at the well-known Odyssey restaurant.

The Nethercutt family founded Merle Norman Cosmetics, and in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the company, have recently opened a cosmetic boutique on site.

Come early at 9 a.m. and stroll through the car museum on your own or browse the cosmetics and get a makeover. Our docent-led tour of the Nethercutt Collection begins at 9:45. Across the street from the museum, the collection features two grand salons displaying the finest examples of cars of their day in showroom settings. Our tour continues with the Nethercutt’s extensive collection of hood ornaments and antique furniture. The top floor of the collection houses mechanical musical instruments ranging from nickelodeons to music boxes and a Wurlitzer organ.

Just outside are a perfectly restored 1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson steam locomotive and a 1912 Pullman Private Car, owned by the eldest daughter of Santa Anita Racetrack founder E.J. “Lucky” Baldwin. Having one’s own rail car would be the equivalent of owning a private jet today.

Following our tour we will lunch at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills, just a few miles from the Nethercutt Collection, where we will enjoy an amazing panoramic view of the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles. The ample buffet is sure to satisfy everyone.

Please mark your calendars and join us for a tour of the Nethercutt Collection followed by an elegant brunch at the Odyssey Restaurant on Saturday, July 14th. We do need to RSVP sooner than our usual meets, so please send your check for $48 per person today! RSVP deadline: July 2nd

San Marino Motor Classic Be sure to mark your calendar for the 2nd annual San Marino Motor Classic on Sunday June 10th at Lacy Park in San Marino. This is a great opportunity to support a worthwhile charity while giving you the opportunity to see a wide range of beautiful cars. Last year, almost 200 cars graced the field. Proceeds from the SMMC benefit the Pasadena Humane Society and the San Marino Rotary. Member Aaron Weiss, who co-founded the SMMC, is also hosting a dinner party at his Flying A Garage in Pasadena to benefit the Petersen Automotive Museum. If you haven’t seen this fabulous collection, don’t miss out. For complete information and advance ticket sales, please go to www.sanmarinomotorclassic.com Parking is free on the beautiful tree-lined streets of San Marino and shuttle service is available that will drop you at the entrance to the park.

This is a non-RROC sponsored event.

Alfred Charles (Al) Bremer On Tuesday May 15th, Alfred Charles Bremer (Al) passed away peacefully at his home in Laguna Woods, California on the morning of his 94th birthday. Al and his dear wife Joan were members of the club for 38 years. Al served as Chairman in 1990. He also served as Vice Chairman, was elected to the Board on several occasions, served as concours chairman

and chief judge and was instrumental in bringing the RROC So Cal Concours to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. He was an esteemed show judge for many events including the Muckenthaller, Huntington Beach and Dana Point shows to name just a few. Al is survived by his wife Joan, their three daughters, Rachel, Sally and Angel, grandchildren and one great grandchild. Al was a highly decorated World War II veteran and was a Major in the British Army. Extremely patriotic, he always displayed both the British and American flags on his home. An avid Rolls-Royce enthusiast, Al owned several including his acquisition of the Shadow formerly owned by Rowen and Martin of “Laugh-In” television series fame. His pride in his Silver Spur was evident and his dedication to the club standards and his genuine affection for the members made him a friend to all. One of his favorite hobbies was polishing and decorating a Rolls-Royce to chauffeur brides for weddings as well as to drive family and friends to anniversary celebrations and other events.

A resident of Long Beach for 36 years, Al participated weekly as a Deacon at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church near his home. As an enterprising entrepreneur, Al captained successful businesses until his retirement.

A celebration of Al’s life was held on May 21st at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church with his son-in law the Reverend Stephan Williams performing the service.

Al, a gentleman and generous man, will be greatly missed.

Why are Rolls-Royce Motorcars “Supernatural?”

Thanks to the members who responded to last month’s questions “Why are Rolls-Royce vehicles named for spirits or ghosts?” and “Why is the color silver so prevalent in the naming?”

From our 42 year member Dr. Patrick Mauer: It all started with AX201 – the famous 40/50 HP which was nicknamed “The Silver Ghost” due to (1) its paint color and (2) its silence. The model was referred to as the 40/50 (horsepower rating). The name stuck but it was quite a while before it was used as a general term for the Silver Ghost that we know. Starting with Ghost; Phantom, Wraith and the like follow.”

From David O’Steen: “In answer to the question as to why Rolls-Royce uses Ghost, Phantom, Spirit, etc. and the color silver is so prevalent in their models (to the best of my knowledge) it started with the Silver Ghost (AX201) that was displayed at the Paris (or Earl’s Court depending on the source) Auto Show of 1906 or 1907. The chassis and body were painted silver and the hardware was nickel plated. Reportedly, the car was so quiet that it was “as silent as a ghost”, at least that’s the story I have read. Since Rolls-Royce cars have always been next to silent, I’m guessing that is where the otherworldly names come from. As for the “Silver” in the names, your guess is as good as mine.”

From John Holden: “I think it is because silver shines and Clouds, Ghosts, Shadows are quiet.”

By Ronny Shaver, Technical Chairman

Pre-event Safety and Function Test List

During the Judging Tech meet, we covered many items and procedures for the annual RROC So Cal Santa Anita Concours event. Among those was a pre-event safety check list. It is important to remember to check a car over before attending a concours or any other event. Most Rolls-Royces and Bentleys are secondary cars and do not get exercised often enough. Nothing is worse than “failing to proceed” during an event, especially a concours event! I have compiled a checklist that has three sections (pre-road test, road test, post-road test), I recommend performing these steps at least two weeks before and the day before any event. The reason to do this two weeks before is in case anything needs attention, then there will be enough time to correct any faults.

Pre-road test checks: Check and charge battery if needed Tire pressures including spare, inspect for damage Engine oil level and condition Coolant level and condition Steering fluid level (if appl.) Bijur system level (if appl.) Pump once or twice. Brake fluid level and condition Inspect hoses and belts for cracks and leaks Look for leaks under car Exterior lamp operation and condition Walk around car and check for loose parts and such Start car and listen for abnormal noises and leaks Check transmission fluid level while running except manual Check brake fluid levels while engine running (if appl.) Wiper blade condition and operation (all speeds if appl.) Wiper washer level and operation (if appl.) Road test checks: Brake pedal feel and performance Engine performance (power, abnormal noises or smoke) Transmission engagement and operation Steering feel and noises (growling, shimmy, looseness) Suspension performance and noises (rattles, bouncing, clunking) Exhaust system sound (excessive noise, rattles) Horn operation Air conditioning and heater operation (if appl.) Window operation Seat operation Post road test checks: Leaks under car Recheck fluid levels (except coolant) After car cools, recheck coolant level

This list covers most safety and functional items on most cars. Make sure to check these yourself or have a professional look the car over before any event to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience at the next event.
