Due to the many misconceptions regarding the Catholic Church

and marriage, please note that a Catholic may marry a non-

Catholic in the Catholic Church, without his or her conversion to

the faith. In some instances, a person, who has been previously

married, can also be married in the Catholic Church after

consultation with the priest. If as a Catholic you’re married

outside of the Catholic Church without the permission of the

Church, we respectfully ask that you refrain from receiving the

Eucharist until your marriage has been validated

(“sacramentalized”) by a Catholic priest or deacon. To remedy

this situation, please call one of the priests to make an

appointment to have your marriage validated. We are very happy

to bring back to the couple, the graces necessary to live out their

marriage, and to reconcile them with the graces of the Eucharist.

REFLECTION

This week we continue to look at the Infancy Narrative in St.

Matthew’s gospel.

We look at the episode of the Magi, the first Gentiles to visit

Christ. Their visit brings to mind of an Old Testament (OT)

story when the Israelites were wandering the desert for 38

years under the leadership of Moses. In the OT, Balak was

the king of Moab who feared the Israelites so much that he

called upon a pagan prophet from the east named Balaam to

put a curse on the Israelites. However, whenever Balaam

tried to curse Israel, words of blessing mysteriously came out

of his mouth. Three times Balaam attempted to cast a spell

on the Israelites but each time God intervened to cause him

to utter blessings (see Numbers 22-24). In Balaam’s last

attempt to curse the Israelites, the Spirit of God came upon

Balaam and he spoke in prophecy (Numbers 24:17-18):

I see him, but not now;

I behold him, but not nigh:

a star shall come forth out of Jacob

and a scepter shall rise out of Israel;

it shall crush the forehead of Moab,

and break down all the sons of Sheth.

Edom shall be dispossessed…

while Israel does valiantly…

The image of a scepter indicates that this person would be a

king and that the scepter should “…rise out of Israel.,”

indicating that this would be a great king born in the land of

the Jews. This king’s coming would be accompanied by a

star that would rise out of the land of Jacob (Israel) and when

he arrives, this Israelite king will defeat Israel’s enemies,

including Edom, who would be dispossessed.

Just as the wicked King Balak wanted to use a pagan from

the East to destroy Israel, so the wicked King Herod tries to

use the Magi from the East in his plot to kill Israel’s new born

Messiah. Balaam prefigures the Magi, and just as Balaam did

not cooperate with Balak’s plan to harm Israel but ended up

blessing God’s people, so do the Magi refuse to cooperate

with Herod. Instead, the Magi end up paying homage to Jesus

and bringing Him gifts fit for a king. Another significant

point in Balaam’s prophecy is that it mentions that when the

new king arrives, he will dispossess Israel’s enemies,

especially Edom. King Herod was not a Jewish King, but a

pagan, more particularly an Edomite who was appointed by

Rome to rule over the land of the Israelites. Herod dies as

stated in 2:19.

Who is Rachel and what is Ramah?

“A voice was heard in Ramah,

wailing and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children;

she refused to be consoled,

because they were no more” (2:16-18)

St. Matthew draws our attention to Jeremiah 31:15 from the

OT. Ramah is a city of sorrow in the OT. In the eight century

B.C. the Assyrians attacked it and in the sixth century B.C.

(Reflection cont’d)

the Babylonians established Ramah as the assembly point for

leading the Jewish captives away to exile. Rachel is the

wife of the patriarch Jacob, thereby making her the matriarch

of all Israel. She is portrayed as weeping bitterly in her grave

for her descendants who are being killed and sent off into the

land of slavery.

In light of Herod’s massacre, St. Matthew looks upon

Bethlehem as the new Ramah, a new city of suffering and

brings to mind of Rachel weeping for her children. This time

it is the Holy Innocents who are being slaughtered. This time,

the Holy Family heads off to Egypt, seen traditionally by the

Israelites as the land of slavery.

For the past six weeks, the bulk of the information regarding

the Infancy Narratives of Sts. Matthew and Luke were taken

from: Sri, Edward. Dawn of the Messiah. Cincinnati, Ohio:

Servant Books, 2005.
