Welcome Year 7 students and families toour final school Newsletter for term two.

At the end of this week you will receive yourchild’s SemesterSemester oneone reportreport cardcard. It isimportant to go over this report withstudents so that they can reflect and setgoals for next term, and prepare for ourparent-teacher interviews. Years 7-9

students will also receive their SemesterSemester twotwo timetablestimetables fromtheir MMM teacher this week. Students requesting electivechanges need to complete a subject change form (collectedfrom YLHOD, student foyer or X Block) and hand it in to thestudent foyer. Students will be notified of any changes via theiremails, and students will also receive an updated timetable viaemail before returning to school in Term 3.

Over the weekend we received communication from the DeadlyUnit here at Marsden SHS, informing us that NAIDOC Weekhas officially been postponed to a new date in the interest ofsafety for our communities. For further information regardingthe postponement and new date, please visit:https://www.naidoc.org.au/news/naidoc-week-2020-postponed

I’d like to go over a quick reminder on reporting incidents - Ifyour student comes home and reports a bullying incident toyou, please prompt them to come and see a teacher or theirYear Level Head of Department to report it. That way studentscan fill out a statement detailing what happened and we caninvestigate and issue consequences from there. This is thequickest way action can be taken and the issue resolved.

In weeks 9-10 in MMM our well-being focus is about showinggratitude, and centres around students creating somethingcalled a ‘Passion Project’. It's been great to see some of theprojects students have come up with, including writing positivepostcards for teachers, presenting posters thanking others, assisting as bus monitors, and tutoring other students attutorials. Students can access this PowerPoint on StudentSharePoint https://qedu.sharepoint.com/sites/2176/Students

It is with great pride that we celebrate the value award winnersfrom year 7 this week:

Welcome to week 10, which brings us tothe final week of the term, and what a term ithas been!

I know I’ve said this before, but thank youagain for all your hard work, persistence anddetermination that your have put in over theterm, during what has been one of thebiggest obstacles we have had to face in

the recent history of education. I appreciate yourcommunication to your children, the school and to me duringthis time. We stood together and we got through it.

Assessment is almost over for Sememster 1 and report cardswill be emailed out at the end of this week. It’s a greatopportunity to sit with your child and go through this reportwith them, discussing the goals that students have set in theirstudent planners during MMM.

Next term I will no longer be carrying on as Year 8 Head ofDepartment, and I hope you will join me in welcoming Mr SeanCurtis, who is returning to Marsden.

Thanks again for all of the support, you have given me this year.I have enjoyed my time with the Year 8 cohort and their families.

Have a wonderful Week 10, remembering we are still learningup until the end of the day on Friday with the @marsden.iexpectations. I wish students all the best in their futureendeavours and hope everyone has a lovely, well-deservedholiday break.

Stay safe and happy.

Year 9Year 9

What a first semester we have had. Wehave been confronted with a pandemic thathas affected us all in different ways. Forstudents, it has forced them to learn incompletely different ways to what they areused to. It has asked students to find theindividual determination within themselvesto achieve. Semester 1, 2020, will have a

little asterisk next to it, with the comment “learning the hardway” associated with it.

From the start of next term we move into a space where thepast has happened and we focus on making the best of oursituation moving forward. This is our last year of junior school. At the end of the year if students are passing majority of theirsubjects, they will be issued with a senior tie. More informationon this will be given early next term. We will be preparingourselves for our parent teacher interviews and our lead upwork into SET planning 2021, where students will choose theirpathway. Our MMM theme is “My Skills”. We will look at howour passions related to our talents and where this may take usin the future. There is a lot to look forward to for the Year 9cohort in Semester 2.

Over the holidays enjoy yourself and I look forward to seeing allstudents back first day of next term.

Mr Mitchell

Year 9 Head of Department

Year 10Year 10

On behalf all of our Marsden community, Iwould like to thank all parents, guardians, teachers and students for the effort andpersistence displayed over the past term. Inunprecedented times, we have all shown anadaptability to ensure that our students aresupported and will always continue to‘move forward’ in all aspects of their

schooling journey.

As we move closer to SET Planning for Year 10’s, an articlethat Forbes published caught my attention. It was titled, “8Things Every School Must Do To Prepare For the 4th IndustrialRevolution”.

The work landscape of the future will undoubtedly look differentthan that of today, just as ours looks different from that of thepast. Some of this will be the result of ever expanding digitaltechnologies, automation, globalisation, and collaboration.Whilst it was pleasing to see an ongoing promotion of STEM(science, tech, engineering, and math) - like subjects on thelist, it was equally comforting to see the words ‘develop humanpotential’.

Author Bernard Marr writes, “Even though machines aremastering many tasks typically performed by humans, peopleare still more adeptable at creative endeavours, imagination, critical thinking, social interaction, and physical proficiency. Theeducational system of the future needs to develop theseinherent abilities in our young humans, so they are equipped topartner with machines in the future rather than compete withthem.”

So how do we as schools develop these inherent skills in ouryoung men and women? I believe we need to recognise it as anissue, own its importance and develop ways of integrating themin to our current curriculum. We need to explicitly nominatecompetencies such as relationship skills, creativity, criticalthinking and self-awareness and we need to say and believe intheir importance.

Whilst is was once simply assumed that these skills wouldnaturally develop with maturity, current research would seem toindicate that these “soft skills” can be and should be explicitlytaught. This is why the Year 10’s will be explicitly taught theseenterprise skills throughout MMM moving forward, and willcontinue to gain and strengthen their knowledge on thesethroughout their senior schooling journey.

In MMM, Year 10’s are now starting to prepare for their SET(Senior Education and Training) Plans which will occur in Term3. The first part of this journey is selecting subjects thatstudents enjoy and are passionate about. Students have nowreceived their 2020 Subject Selection Handbook, whichcontains all of the relevant information students need to makethese informed choices. Why not ask your child what 6

subjects they’ll be selecting for Years 11/12? What

21stCentury skills are required to be successful in subjects?

Students have also begun to create job portfolios from theresearch that they have completed on the Myfuture website. Why not share your career journey with your child or click onthe following link here to explore some case studies? A greatconversation starter leading into students Future World of Work!

Throughout the term students have built productiverelationships with their Marsden Mako Mentors and areencouraged to also utilise them for direction and assistance ifthey require support throughout the rest of the year and intothe future. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday withfamily and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone back atschool, ready for another amazing term.

Mr Leong

Year 10 Head of Department

Year 11Year 11

Last week was the first session for our Year11 Leadership Program. Students listenedto a presentation from Mr Peach about whatit means to be a Mako Leader and a littleabout his journey to being our ExecutivePrincipal. Students will take part in a secondsession this term along with further sessionsin Term 3 with a combination of school and

external presenters.

Students have finalised their Unit 1 assessment in the lastweek and have commenced learning for Unit 2. Senior schooltimelines don’t quite match the term/semester timeline sostudents will continue unit learning across the break. Finally,I would like to pass on a big thank you to all the parentsand guardians who have supported their students through thislearning journey. It has thrown new challenges towards us alland our students and staff appreciate all of your help.

Students reflected on their learning journey across their firstsemester as a senior student in MMM this week. With acompletely unique start to the senior year, it is great to seestudents successfully complete Unit 1. Reflections includedacademic progress along with behaviour and effort both atschool and while learning online. Next term students will usethis information to reflect on their SET plans and QCE/ATARtrajectory before parent teacher interviews in week 5.

Students had their Academic coachingsession in week 9. They should have walkedaway from this session knowing where theycurrently sit in terms of their seniorschooling and have a plan in place toachieve their desired outcome byNovember. This session will be followed upin Week 5, Term 3 with parents/guardiansinvited to attend.

Student’s should have now completed Unit 3 and moving ontoUnit 4. Report cards will be sent out on Friday afternoon andthis will have Unit 3 grades, these updated grades were notavailable at the time of the coaching sessions, so were nottaken into consideration.

MMM in Term 3 will be used to narrow the focus of student’s toconcentrate on two things:

Congratulations for making the most out of a tough situationwith the interruptions to the school term. Ensure you rest upand relax over the holidays ready to hit the ground running Day1 of Term 3.
