Year 7Year 7

Welcome Year 7 students and families toour latest School Newsletter. I hope thatyour students have settled back in toon-campus learning and that you have hada chance to celebrate their successes alongthe way.

As we head in to the assessment end of theterm, it is more important than ever that

students continue to demonstrate the high expectations atMarsden so that they can focus and achieve success. Werecognise there have been many challenges along the way thissemester, but as long as students try their best and work withtheir teachers, I am sure they will be happy with themselves andtheir results. Marsden SHS has a school culture based on highexpectations, including: appropriate behaviour, correct uniformand dress code, respecting the grounds and others, engagingin class and assessment, and good attendance andpunctuality. As such, the following behaviour will not betolerated at Marsden: physical violence, bullying and verbalmisconduct, refusing instructions, and truancy or lateness.Every student deserves to come to school and feel safe andsupported, and staff have reiterated the above expectationsagain with Year 7 students in MMM time this week.

During MMM time in week 7, students spent Monday morning’slesson revisiting expectations here at Marsden SHS so that theycan keep themselves and others safe. Tuesday’s lesson then

went through the process on how to complete subject selectionfor Year 8 2021 (please note: subject selections are not openfor students yet, however they will be receiving their subjectselection booklets at the end of this term in preparation for themto open online early next term).

In week 8 in MMM our well-being focus is about showinggratitude, and centres around students creating somethingcalled a ‘Passion Project’. This could include things such as:volunteering around school or at home, writing a positive letterto a teacher or another adult, or even making a gift for someoneto show your appreciation as examples. Students can accessthis PowerPoint on Student SharePointhttps://qedu.sharepoint.com/sites/2176/Students

Finally, another massive thank you to all staff, students, andparents/guardians for the extensive work you have undertakenthroughout the semester as we have managed the changingresponse to COVID-19.

Have a great weekend and stay safe!

Mr Cooke

Year 7 Head of Department

Year 8Year 8

Welcome to week 8, I hope your child hassettled well into being back on campus andcontinuing their learning.

As we head in to the assessment end of theterm, it is more important than ever thatstudents continue to demonstrate [email protected]@marsden.i high expectations so that theyare able to focus and achieve success. We

understand there have been many challenges along the waythis semester, and students and families have had to dig deepand show strength and resilience in the face of uncertainty, however this has made us stronger and we know we are able totackle any task if we put effort in and try our very best.

Here at Marsden, we have a school culture based on highexpectations, including being respectful to staff, students andthe grounds and displaying appropriate behaviours at schooland into the community.

Wearing the correct uniform and following the school’s dresscode is one of our school expectations, and this information canbe found at the back of the student planner on page 1B-3B.As the temperature drops, we are seeing some non-Marsdenjumpers and beanies creep in. If students choose to wear theincorrect items, students will be asked to remove them andthey may even be confiscated. This process also applies forincorrect jewellery.

I have also noticed that there are some coloured socks andsocks with markings also creeping in. A reminder that socksneed to be visible around the ankle and above the shoe line, they need to be plain white with no markings or logos. Shoesmust be black leather and lace up. If students have theincorrect uniform, they will be sent to the second hand uniformshop and will need to borrow a replacement for the day.

Page 3: Marsden State High School eNewsletter · In week 8 in MMM our well-being focus is about showing gratitude, and centres around students creating something calleda‘PassionProject’.Thiscouldincludethingssuchas:

Remember, to get the most from schooling, students needto put their best in. This includes engaging in class andassessment (active learning), maintain good attendance, whichmeans being present every day and being on time to classes. Ifstudents arrive late for class, the student will need to make upthis time as part of a detention, issued either by the Teacher orby the Year Level Head of Department.

Following our school policy, particular behaviours are nottolerated at Marsden. These include physical violence, bullyingand verbal misconduct, refusing instructions, and truancy.Every student deserves to come to school and feel safe andsupported, and staff reiterate these expectations with studentsevery day.

In MMM lessons this week, students have looked at positiveemotions and applying this to their assessment. We havelooked in to the ‘glass half full’ mentality, which also helps tocreate a ‘growth mindset’. We explored research to suggestthat a positive mindset and positive emotions can set us upfor success, and that we will ultimately face challenges anddisappointments (and this is a natural occurrence in life),however, over time, positive emotions help us to build theresources that lead to happier lives, such as friends, knowledge, better problem solving and even better health.

What's more, positive emotions can act as a buffer againststress and help us cope when we face difficulties. There isalso evidence that positive emotions can help us recover morerapidly from, or even undo, the effects of negative emotions.

Week 9 in MMM, we will be looking through the process on howto complete subject selection for Year 9 in 2021 (please note:subject selections are not open for students yet, however theywill be receiving their subject selection booklets at the end ofthis term in preparation for them to open online early next term).

If students need to do some catching up, filling in some gapsor require some additional Teacher support, we will be holdingJunior Study Group face-to-face again every Monday afternoonfrom 2:45pm to 3:45pm in the Marsden SHS Library.

Enjoy your week and please continue to stay safe and look afterone another.

Year 10Year 10

We are now well into assessment time asthis end of the term fast approaches. Ask ifyour child needs help with their assignmentsor preparing for an exam. Addingassessment monitoring and due dates toyour home calendar is a valuable supporttool. Every student now has an assessmentplanner outlining upcoming assessments.

Helping your child work out when they have to start, reach acertain point or even finish their assessments is a really powerfulway of keeping them on track. Get your child motivated andprepared early to avoid the night before rush!

Year 10’s are now starting to prepare for their SET Plans whichwill occur in Term 3. The first part of this journey is selectingsubjects that students are passionate about. Over the next2 weeks, students will explore subject offerings for Years 11and 12. Students have all received their 2021 subject selectionbooks, which contains all of the relevant information they needto make these informed choices. Why not ask your child what

6 subjects they’ll be selecting for Years 11/12? What 21st

Century skills are required to be successful in subjects?

Year 10 SET Plan UpdateYear 10 SET Plan Update

In Year 10, all students in school or other learning providersacross Queensland develop their Senior Education and Training(SET) Plan. The completion of this plan is a compulsoryrequirement before entering Year 11.

This plan:

The SET Plan Interviews for Year 10 students at Marsden SHSin 2020 will be held in Term 3 on Wednesday 12th of August.

On Wednesday 12th August there won't be a regulartimetabled day for the Year 10 cohort. Students only have toattend the school grounds on this day with a parent/guardian tocomplete their SET Plan during their allocated time slot.

SOBS will be set up shortly, and an email will be sent to confirmonce this has been completed so that parents/guardians canstart to book in their SET Plan meeting.

Once completed, the SET Plan is to be signed and dated bythe key people involved in its development, including parents/guardians and students, to show their commitment andagreement to the plan. For this reason a SET Plan Interviewwhich involves the student, their parent or guardian and theschool, is imperative.

If you have any questions or queries in relation to anything youhave read in this email, please do not hesitate to contact myselfat [email protected] or 32990555.

All students and families have received theirupdated Unit 3 and 4 assessment schedulefor the remainder of this year. As you areaware due to 'learning at home' for a periodof time, QCAA made the decision to removeone piece of internal assessment for eachsubject. This updated schedule shouldallow all students to adequately prepare upuntil the end this Term on a positive note

and begin Term 3 well prepared and sufficiently organised. Now that students are back into the swing of things, Iencourage Year 12 students and families to keepcommunicating with the school as the year progresses toensure they have the support required to achieve their potentialin 2020.

ReThink Sustainability Index (RTSI) for schools online SurveyReThink Sustainability Index (RTSI) for schools online Survey

ReThink Sustainability has developed a sustainability indexbased on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The RTSI identifies opportunities for commercial entities – smalland large, government agencies and communities, such asschools, to identify opportunities for improved performanceacross all areas of an organisation.

The RTSI is an online behavioural, awareness and attitudinalinsights gathering platform that surpasses the traditionalmonitoring and evaluation tools such as quantitative surveys, qualitative interviews, performance reviews or analysis ofcomplaints handling systems by providing real time insights toimprove sustainability impact.

The RTSI for schools has been developed with both the UNSDGs and the sustainability cross curriculum priority within theAustralian Curriculum at its core. The measurement andbase-lining of the existing mindset, performance andbehaviours through the RTSI for schools will identify theindividual perspective of students, teachers, parents, operational staff and the broader community that arecontributing to the success of the school as well as identifyareas for future focus. The perspective of each of theseparticipating groups enables a profile to be established foreach group. This group categorisation or profiling is then crossreferenced to understand the dynamics that may be at playhowever invisible.

The RTSI for schools is underpinned by a sophisticatedanalytics and insight engine however, the online interface issimple and engaging for each participant. The interactivecomponent of the platform allows the individual to be profiledwhile their identity remains confidential and de-identified.

The real time analysis combined with the use of multiple datareference points within the platform enables the school tocheck, verify and understand the true motives and beliefs heldby each group regarding the actions they take and providefeedback in a meaningful and timely manner.
