MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“Think it, want it, work for it” is our theme for the year. Locked in this is the key to success for

the future.

• om te begin droom;

But what is it that we can do to turn this theme into reality? I believe that learners can do the fol-

lowing to turn their dreams into reality:

Start thinking what it is that you want to achieve (Set a goal).

Map the road to achieve the goal you have set (Decide what you can do to achieve your

goal).

Decide what you are prepared to give up to achieve your goal (Be prepared to give up

your own comfort and work through the pain to reach the goal)

Tog is

vernietig.

May God grant you the wisdom and the courage as well as the

perseverance to never settle for anything less than giving your

best to achieve your goals! Let us think about our dreams, let us

want to achieve our goals and let us work day-in and day-out to

reach our goals.

Mag 2019 jou ”jaar-van-drome-waar-maak” wees!

Groete/Regards

Francois van Heerden

MATRIC CLASS OF 2018

There were 35 candidates who wrote the matric exam and all of these candidates passed. Congratulations to all the

learners and thank you for your hard work and dedication.

Let me summarise the results:

The grade 12 class average was 54.23%.

The following subjects received recognition at the Motheo District prize giving ceremony for being under the top 3

performers in the Motheo district:

Tourism (Class average 66.67%) – Congratulations to Mrs. Janika Barker.

Computer Applications Technology (Class average 59.60%) – Congratulations to Mrs. Ria Venter and Mrs. Carlo van

Tonder.

Hospitality Studies (Class average 51.91%), Agricultural Technology (Class average 63.64%), Sesotho Home Lan-

guage (Class average 66.50%) and Engineering Graphics and Design (Class average 55.57%) were also part of the top

performing subjects, but because the classes had less than 15 learners, they did not qualify for district prizes.

13 Distinctions were obtained (4 in Mathematical Literacy, 3 in Tourism, 3 in Life Orientation, 2 in Agricultural

Technology and 1 in Engineering Graphics and Design).

Our learners also qualified to study at the following institutions:

20 Bachelors pass.

kwalifiseer.

2 Hoër Sertifikaat toelatings wat beteken hul kan by ‘n tegniese kollege of ekwivalente instelling studeer.

Such wonderful results cannot be possible without the hard work and dedication of our committed staff. They sacri-

fice their afternoons for extra classes and additional support to our learners to help the learners to perform on such a

high level. Thank you to all of you!

All the honour and glory to God!

Op 2 Februarie is alle Graad 7, asook nuwe leerders,

verwelkom by die skool met ons tradisionele

Kersseremonie.

A New Breeze at the Support Team!

We are so happy to welcome Soraya Moreira and Janetha Morgenroodt at the clinic

of Martie du Plessis School!

Soraya is the new psychologist, who is responsible for all the classes in the Preprima-

ry and Foundation Phase, as well as Gr 8.

Janetha is our new receptionist and secretary

at the clinic.

Both these two have proven themselves, in a

short while, to be invaluable team members,

bringing new and creative ideas to us.

This will ensure that we can continue deliver-

ing the best possible support to our primary

client- the learners at Martie!

YOUTH SUPPORT WORKER—MR. BLAISE BUKASA

Finding diamonds in often troubled hearts

Mr Blaise Bukasa, our Youth Support Worker and the gen-

tleman with the friendly face, is someone who under-

stands everything about how unfair life can be.

He was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

(DRC) and was one of nine children born from the mar-

riage between his mother and father. Subsequently his

parents got divorced and he had to experience the loss

of three of his siblings. Mr Blase experienced the hardship

of a war-torn country gripped in civil war. It is here where

he first followed his dream by establishing several prayer

groups in the DRC.

Mr Blaise married his sweetheart Joëlle in 2002 and be-

came an ordained Pastor in the Diamond capital of the DRC, Mbuji-Mayi. In 2010 after 7 years in

the ministry he left the DRC for the city of gold (Johannesburg). He established a security compa-

ny and got a contract to do security work in Bloemfontein in 2012. In 2014 the contract expired

and he had to look for alternatives.

It is here where he could so easily have given up hope, but God had something very special in

mind for Mr Blaise. He started to work as a household aid for a company that provided contract

workers to work in the kitchen. During this time, he took his off-days to continue the work God

had placed in his heart to minister voluntarily at Correctional Services.

One day Mr van Heerden saw Blaise preparing his message for the inmates during his lunch time

in the kitchen and a conversation followed about the story of Daniel. Mr van Heerden was highly

impressed with the dedication and kind-heartedness of this gentleman who was ministering peo-

ple in need. It left a lasting impression on him realising that this gentleman had a message that

must be heard. Mr van Heerden was further impressed with the fact that although Mr Blaise was

at that stage only a household aid cleaning and helping in the kitchen, he always kept his digni-

ty and kept believing that his self-worth was not defined by his

occupation but by what God has invested in him and kept alive

since the early days in the DRC. Later that year, Mr Blaise was

asked to come and inspire the staff, as well as the learners with

his message of Hope.

In 2018 Mr Blaise got the opportunity to start working full time as

the first Youth Support Worker at Martie du Plessis. This fine gen-

tleman from the Diamond capital in the DRC is now helping

learners to understand that they can also find the diamonds

from within.

Just like Mr Blaise has inspired the people he met along his often

difficult and troublesome journey, we believe that the learners

he touches with his dedication will continue to shine like dia-

monds and also become an inspiration to others.

GAME CHANGER PROGRAMME

According to the Collins dictionary, a game changer is “a

person (or thing) that significantly affects the outcome

of something”.

We understand that time is a scarce commodity in mod-

ern time as parents and children have a lot of activities

and responsibilities to attend to and do not always have

time to spend on instilling life skills. There are a lot of learners who have enormous poten-

tial but are unsure of themselves and we have therefore developed the “Game Changer”

programme to assist a parent/guardian in instilling important life principles/skills.

The aim of the programme is to teach and equip learners with life-lessons in a fun-filled

way. Principles/skills included in the programme are, amongst others:

• Goal setting and how to stay focussed

• Good decision making

• How to behave with consistency in life

• The importance of team work

• Engagement of rules and being disciplined

• How to do things differently

• Handling relationships and anger management

We implemented the first two programmes in the first term. From the feedback we got

from parents and what we can see, we are excited to report that learners who attended

this programme have acquired these skills and are successfully implementing them. Their

self-worth is already increasing, they are making better choices and they are excited and

willing to ensure that their lives have a positive/successful outcome.

The next programme will take place 2 – 5 April and would be exclusively for the grade 12

learners. We invite any other learner who would like to participate in this programme to

give their names to Mr. Blaise Bukasa or Mrs. Celéste Klopper who is overseeing this pro-

gramme.

In die Grondslagfase speel ons “Telefoontjie Tele-

foontjie”

The Foundation Phase im-

plemented a new reading

series this year for the

Afrikaans as well as the

English learners.

Elke kind het ‘n leesboekie

ontvang waarin hulle by die

huis kan oefen terwyl ons in

die klas in die “Groot

Boeke” werk.

Uitslae: Dian en Anrique het elkeen 2 van die 4 wedstryde gewen ;

Fichardtpark Sportdag

4 Leerders naamlik Ruben Klopper, Heinrich Van

Leerders sal ‘n uitnodiging ontvang.

GROEP LEERDERS!!

The learners divided into two groups. In these groups they did all the activities together, which included “boeresport”, an obstacle course, swimming, and building a shelter on the mountain. They also had a concert where they had to perform a song and an act.

wedge”, “disc seats”, “therapy bean bag chair”,

The Intermediate Phase started this year with a

brand-new reward system. Learners are rewarded

with “smarties” which they can in return exchange

for privileges. The highest privilege is 50 smarties to

wear civvies for a whole day. Part of this reward sys-

tem is also a greywater project whereby learners can

obtain “smarties” on a Friday by bringing their grey-

water to the school to be used for the gardens.

A Big thank you to everyone that already brought

water and also to the learners for cooperating so

well in the project.

Aspekte rondom doelwitfor-

mulering, luistervaardighede, impulskontrole en

samewerking as ‘n groep is hanteer. Die seuns het

baie entoesiasties deelgeneem en aspekte is

oorgedra na praktiese situasies in hulle daaglikse

lewe.

samewerking.

Die VCSV van die Vrystaat het op Vrydag 1 Feb-

ruarie 2019, ‘n tak by Martie du Plessis Skool

gestig.

GLOW IN THE DARK

Die graad 4-6 leerders het ‘n valentynsdans gehou. They hopped, skipped and jumped and enjoyed it very much.

There were Zumba instructors who helped them with dance

sequences.

It was a lot of fun.

Entrepreneurial day

On the 1st of March the grade

7 learners visited Sand du

Plessis High School’s entre-

preneurial day. The learners

enjoyed it very much and

they used it as a positive

learning experience. As al-

ways our Martie learners

took the limelight, with Ole tak-

ing part in the talent show

and by dancing his way into

everyone’s heart.
