•He is known as the “Father of cell phones” as he made the first cell phone in 1973
Career
In 1950, Cooper graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology. He went from there to join the Naval Reserves and worked with destroyers and submarines.
He joined Motorola in 1954
Earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering in 1957 at Illinois Institute of Technology
Inspiration… Star Trek??
Believe it or not, the show Star Trek inspired his whole “individual phone” idea with Captain James T. Kirk and his communicator.
The call that
started it all
Standing on the corner off of 53rd Street in
Manhattan, Martin Cooper dialed his leading
competitor’s number who worked for Bell Labs, Joel S. Engel. He told him the race was over… He had made the first ever call
over a cell phone.

with his wife and business partner, known as the “First Lady of Wireless”
Law of Spectral Efficiency
Cooper formulated a law that stating that the “maximum number of voice conversation, or equivalent data transactions that can be conducted in all of the useful radio spectrum over a given area, double every 30 months.”
Martin Cooper TodayApril 3rd of this year was the 40th anniversary of being able to make phone calls. He is now 84 years old and works in the
Silicon Valley.
