About me

My name is Martin Rodriguez and I was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. My parents are from Mexico and migrated to the United States in 1979. I attended Denver Public Schools where I graduated from West High School in 2001. Soon after, I attended Metropolitan State College of Denver where I majored in Modern Languages (Spanish) and minored in Elementary Education. Two years later, I decided to enroll at the University of Phoenix for the Masters of Business Management/Public Administration and graduated in 2008. Currently, I am

completing my license in Elementary Education at Metropolitan State University and I am expecting to complete my program in May 2015. I have completed all requirements with the DPS, and able to begin applying for teaching positions.

Professional Experience

I have worked more than 10 years with at-risk youth and low-income families. My professional experience includes:

Serving as a Para-professional for Denver Public Schools, Youth Counselor for the Family Crisis Center, Educational Intervention Specialist for Adams 12 School District, Re-engagement Coordinator for JeffCo Public Schools Resource Navigator for Worklife Partnership & Data Management Specialist for Hospital Cooperative Laundry.

Philosophy of Education

My philosophy in education is to best serve youth through coaching, mentoring, and creating engaging opportunities. I have high behavioral and academic expectations for all of my students. I believe students will make mistakes and it is my responsibility, as a teacher, to learn from them and help them grow intellectually and emotionally. I believe in creating a safe and predictable teaching environment to insure students thrive in a fostering environment. More importantly, I believe it is crucial to develop a professional and healthy relationship with students. Building a rapport with students brings forth the opportunity to effectively engage, motivate, communicate, and equip students for academic success.

Professional Success Story

One of the biggest successful accomplishments was my position at Northglenn High School as an Educational Intervention Specialist. At the beginning of my semester, I had a caseload of 30 students, who had more than one failing grade. My goals and strategies to help these failing students was simple:

Communicate my high expectations to my students, Build rapport with them, Communicate with school faculty and staff, and Outreach and build relationships with the students and their parents.

In a six week period, I utilized these strategies to effectively change the outcome of the academic progress of my students. Out of the 30 students in my case load, 26 students jumped two grade letters and were on course to be on track. This experience has taught me the importance of utilizing these strategies and to effectively change the course of my students’ academic progress.
