Stalking

I go down to the creek again and lead a creek life. I watch and stalk. In the cool of the evening I take to the bridges over the creek. I am prying into secrets again and taking my chances. I might not see anything happen. I might see nothing but light on the water. I walk home exhilarated or calmed, but always changed, alive. In summer I stalk. Summer leaves obscure and heat dazzles and the creatures hide from the red-eyed sun and me. I have to seek things out. The creatures I seek have several senses and free will. It becomes apparent that they do not wish to be seen. I can stalk them in either of two ways. The first is not what you think of as true stalking, but it is the “via negativa” and as fruitful as actual pursuit. When I stalk this way, I take my stand on a bridge and wait—empty. I put myself in the way of the creatures’ passage, something might come, and something might go, I am mutant under the apple tree… Stalking the other way, I forge my own passage seeking the creature. I wander the banks. And what I find I follow doggedly. Fish are hard to see either way.

From A Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard What Annie Dillard calls “stalking” is a spiritual practice. Someone from our parish recently shared with me a book of poetry. Some of the poems are based upon photographic images. The poet spent time gazing at an image till it spoke to her heart. There are barriers to seeing imposed by COVID-19. In normal times, a huge crowd proudly gazes as graduates accept a diploma. In normal times, we would not have to have a screen imposed between student and teacher, between shopkeeper and customer. In normal times, masks would not be covering the smile on your face. In normal times, family members would be able to see for a last time the patients dying of the virus. Annie Dillard’s thoughts about stalking hit home during this week between Ascension and Pentecost. When Jesus gathered his disciples for the last time on the Mt. of Olives, He was taken from their sight. No longer could he be seen with physical eyes. But when the Spirit came upon the disciples at Pentecost “their faith did not fail, their hope was not shaken, and their love did not grow cold,” as St. Augustine said in an ancient sermon. They could not see that strong wind that blew through the house. But its effects were apparent. The Holy Spirit cannot be seen, but the effect of the Holy Spirit on people’s lives is most apparent in the life of the church. St. Augustine says that Jesus’ visible presence has passed into the sacraments. He says, “our faith is nobler and stronger because sight has been replaced by a doctrine whose authority is accepted by believing hearts, enlightened on high. This faith of ours was increased by the Lord’s Ascension and strengthened by the gift of the Spirit.” That increased faith will be needed as we go forward slowly to return to the celebration of sacraments in which water, oil, light, bread and wine are tangible realities that reveal the unseen.

PARISH REOPENING PLAN COVID-19 RESPONSE

Phase I of the Archdiocesan Plan for Reopening allows parishes to reopen for Baptism, Reconciliation, weddings, and funerals with a limit of 10 attendees. During Phase I, parishes are not allowed to offer daily or Sunday Mass, even with 10 or fewer attendees. The resumption of public Mass, regardless of the number of attendees, is a more complex process. We will be able to inform and improve that process by gathering lessons learned in Phase I. Our entire leadership team, including Co-leaders Mary Hermanson and Seminarian Andy Matijevic, our three captains, Julie Costa, John Ciprian, and Tom D’Ambrosio; our Compliance Manager, Brenda Hickey and I, participated in a training webinar prior to our being certified for reopening. On Saturday, May 23 and Tuesday, May 26 we conducted training for the over 25 volunteers for greeting, set-up, and clean-up roles to maintain safety and prevent transmission. Beginning the week of June 1, we begin scheduling for the celebrations now permitted.

Reflections from Father Derek A Reflection on An Introduction to the Sacred Liturgy- Class #2: Rite I hope you’ve gotten an opportunity to enjoy learning about the Liturgy. The only thing better than Dr. Carstens’ knowledge and humor might be his facial hair! This second class explains what rites are and why we have them. Rituals are not only indispensable to the Liturgy but indispensable to human life. He explains we have rituals when we wake up, how we travel to work, how we go to bed, etc. I like his explanation of introducing his son to his boss. He must dress up, stand up, look him in his eyes, extend his hand, say hello and tell him his name. While it may all seem unnecessary, these gestures communicate to his boss a level of respect and a desire to be known. As it pertains to the Liturgy, we have rituals because we want to express the same when we communicate with God. This includes the words and actions, gestures and postures used to signify the coming together of humanity and God. Additionally, bowing, processing, wearing sacred vestments, and kissing books, when done outside of the Liturgy, look very strange but when done within it, affectionately and reverently communicate a desire within us to give praise and glory to God. Furthermore, when done in an ordered and united way, rites emphasize our desire to be one family—God’s children. Though rites are intrinsically non-utilitarian, they do preserve this unity. For many non-Catholics, rites are immediately off-putting. They do not understand them and therefore, feel unwelcome. Class #2 was not meant to explain each sign or symbol (that’s covered in class #3), but rather set a foundation beforehand of why we maintain rites, have ritual books, common words and gestures in the Liturgy at all.

Musings of a New Priest In the Beginning

After much consultation with Fr. Derek (and when I say “consultation” I mean being yelled at by Fr. Derek telling me I look like a homeless vagabond), I decided to cut my hair and trim my beard. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but for me it was an outward manifestation of an inward reality of my heart during this quarantine. A lot of negative feelings of guilt, fear, and anxiety built up over time and I just needed to surrender all of it to the Lord. With a fresh cut and trim, I had that outward feeling of being clean and “made new.” In the same way, when the sacrament of Confession will be made available soon, we can give all of that sin, fear, and anxiety to Jesus and be MADE NEW!

Pondering Priesthood

A Seminarian’s Thoughts Today we celebrate Pentecost, the coming of the promised Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Mary in the upper room. This feast is a cornerstone of the life of the Church, for after the Apostles and Mary received the Holy Spirit, they went out and proclaimed the Risen Lord. They went to all the corners of the world. The feast of Pentecost shows us here today that God keeps his promises. Throughout the latter part of John’s gospel, beginning in Chapter 13, Jesus promises He will send an Advocate. After Jesus ascended into heaven, the Apostles could have assumed it was over. They would return to their former lives of being fishermen, tax collectors, zealots, and sinners. But, our God keeps his promises. God’s plan of salvation was not over. The Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and they went out and proclaimed the Risen Christ. Last week I reflected on the visible realities becoming invisible with the Ascension. Now, the invisible becomes visible again through the Spirit. The first Pentecost is very similar to the one we are celebrating in 2020. Throughout this unusual Easter season, Jesus has appeared to us in our homes through online Masses, intentional prayer time, and a deepening of a connection with those we live with, and those we connect with over video chats. The invisible faith that we have received from God, we put into visible action. Today the Spirit comes upon each of us, as it did at our baptism, to empower us to be bold and proclaim the Risen Christ here and now, wherever we find ourselves. As our churches are beginning to reopen for funerals, weddings, confession, and baptism, and as the state moves into Phase 3 of the Restore Illinois Plan, let us be inspired by the Holy Spirit to tell others what God has done for us in this time of quarantine. How opportune for these moments in reopening to fall on the weekend of Pentecost. Let us go to the corners of the earth, to outdoor patio seating at restaurants, to parks, to Mariano’s, to nail salons and barber shops, all the while wearing a face mask and social distancing, and tell others what Christ has done, and what he will continue to do. We have a God who keeps his promises and who is with us to the end of the age. Let us boldly proclaim Jesus and his message of peace, love, and mercy, rooted in the Resurrection as we emerge from our homes and our tombs, and live in the newness of the life in Christ and His Church.

The Richness of the Spirit Students, and most adults recalling their school days,

are familiar with the phrase “compare and contrast” that

shows up from time to time on tests. Today we hear two different accounts of the giving of the Holy Spirit to the

church. Let’s contrast, then compare. Luke’s account

from Acts is filled with arresting details: the mighty wind

from heaven, the tongues of flame, the miracle of

different languages. John’s account seems timid: fearful

disciples, the wounded Christ, the expelling of breath from his risen body, not from the sky. Our literal, modern

minds wonder which way it happened; our noisy culture

probably makes us prefer the former. But if we compare

the two, we find that the dazzling richness of the Spirit

fills both accounts, for it is the very breath of the risen Christ, ascended to the sky in Luke, that appears to his

disciples in John and sends his followers forth to carry on

his mission of forgiving sin and proclaiming the mighty
