Passing It On

Faith Formation

Although I wrote this reflection on last week’s Gospel, it seems appropriate for this First Communion Weekend. It is about what the Gospel calls the “Breaking of the Bread.” In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus is resolute about going to Jerusalem. The disciples in this post-Easter story are escaping from Jerusalem. The nature of Jesus’ journey is to accomplish his God-given mission. Because they feel God has abandoned them, the disciples have abandoned their mission as Jesus’ disciples. When Jesus himself comes walking along with them, their eyes are prevented from recognizing him. After they report their disappointment, his response is that they are “slow of heart to believe.” In biblical spirituality the heart is connected to the eyes. “When the heart burns, the fire pushes up through the chest and flows out the eyes. This allows the person to see. The eyes are like the headlights of a car. They are lit from within in order to peer out into the darkness outside.” (Shea, On Earth as It Is In Heaven, p. 170) When the fire in the heart dies down, the person’s spiritual sight dims and eventually goes out…This is true for us as much as it is true for these two disciples on the road to Emmaus. “When people are not in touch with their deepest center (the heart) they cannot see the events of life from a spiritual perspective. On the physical level, they may have 20/20 vision, but on a spiritual level, they are visually impaired.” (Shea, ibid., pp170-171) The path to spiritual sight is to stir the embers of the heart. This is Jesus’ strategy. Physically, our strongest senses for perception are hearing and seeing. At every Mass Jesus speaks to us through the Word. The most visible sign by which Jesus is recognized is when bread is blessed, broken, and given to us. These words and action can be heard and seen on the physical level, but sometimes we are “slow of heart to believe it.” The deeper meaning of the ritual that is repeated at every Mass escapes us. Jesus is present whenever and wherever he is remembered correctly. This is what the Gospel calls “The Breaking of Bread.” It is not referring only to a ritual act. There is also an interior change that occurs. It begins inside of us. The interior change has its starting point at our “slowness of heart to believe.” It culminates at a destination called “hearts burning within us” enkindled by God’s love. That journey begins from the inside out, but it does not end inside. Enflamed hearts result from hearing all that the Scriptures have to tell us. Enflamed hearts are accompanied by an explicit realization. The life and mission on which I am sent is broken open for me. My life and mission as Jesus’ disciple is completely united with Jesus’ life and mission. Although Jesus vanished from physical sight, He has not disappeared from his presence in my life nor has he disappeared from the mission of the church.

Fr. Jerry Gunderson

What Irish eyes see We have begun Mary’s month, which should hold a special place in our hearts here at MSW. As the perfect and first follower of Jesus, she always has much to teach us about how best to experience this life God has given us. In our Gospel, Jesus invites each of us to follow him in a personal way in order to “have life and have it more abundantly.” The Virgin Mary experienced this fullness of life and can teach us to do the same. May I make a recommendation for each of us? Do something special in honor of the Virgin Mary during this month. If you don’t have a statue or image of her in your house or garden, then perhaps you could get one; if you do have a statue or image, perhaps you could honor Jesus’ mother by placing or planting flowers in front of her (we think of our own beautiful Mary Garden next to the entrance to the Gathering Space); if you’re not used to praying the Rosary, then try to pray it each day in May; if you do pray the Rosary already, perhaps you could make a small local pilgrimage to a Marian Shrine such as Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines; you could come to Mass on May 13, the 100thanniversary of the Fatima apparitions; or May 31, which is the Feast of the Visitation. God has given us the Virgin Mary to remind us of how tender and loving God is. It is easy for us to forget that, due to our wounded human nature and experience, but God’s goodness and love are unlimited and unconditional. Sometimes it is easier for us to accept and welcome that love when we approach the simple woman from Nazareth, Mary, who is now Queen of Heaven. Let us approach her during this month of May, to become better disciples of Jesus and children of our Heavenly Father.

Fr. Tim Monahan

God and the World

The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers

into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2).

Catholic Charities Collection on Mother’s Day In the impoverished and violent neighborhoods that need us most, Catholic Charities is often the only place where people can go for help. Our doors are open to all. Families in crisis find new strength and the courage to build a better future. Your Mother’s Day gift will feed, comfort, shelter, and care for the poor

and vulnerable. Catholic Charities has provided hope for 100 years. Learn more at www.catholiccharities.net.

The Call of the Good Shepherd The Twenty-third Psalm, today’s responsorial psalm, is arguably the best known of all the psalms. The line that reads

“Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff

that give me courage” (Psalm 23:4) connects this week’s scriptures to the wonderful story of the road to Emmaus, which we heard last week. The Lord Jesus, our Good Shepherd, is constantly at our side. He calls us each by name, beckoning us into a deeper relationship with him. That call, issued to each of us at the moment of our baptism, carries with it the promise of the Good Shepherd: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). Our Parish School Highlights

Before the week-long Easter break, the school community gathered to celebrate the Triduum in a Prayer Service hosted by the 5th Grade. Afterwards, the 5th graders assembled for a photograph in church.

Fourth graders study Illinois fossils Did you know we have our very own paleontologists at Mary, Seat of Wisdom School? Mrs. Alippo's 4th graders have been learning all about our planet Earth, including how fossils are made. They concluded by learning about the Mazon Creek area, here in Illinois, and creating their very own cast model of various shells. To make their faux fossils really come to life, they "painted" the castings with a slurry of dirty, muddy water to make them look authentic. Science brought to life in the classroom is always a great way to learn!

Sixth graders take on STEM challenge Recently, Mrs. Alippo's 6th grade Science class participated in a STEM competition within their grade. They were given a secret bag of materials and a mission: to create a working catapult using only those items in the bag. They were given one class period to create then started the competition the next class period. The competition was to propel a 20gm clay ball the furthest. After the first round of trials, the students gathered their data and analyzed as a team what worked and what did not. They were then given the chance to redesign and re-engineer their catapults, still only using materials originally given. The results were astounding! It looks like there are some budding mechanical engineers in our midst!

National Catholic Youth Conference Returns to Indy The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) is a young adult conference

open to high schoolers that offers a unique experience for teens to come closer

to Christ through worship, education, prayer and fellowship.

The conference is a biannual event that will take place from Thursday, November 16 through Sunday, November 19, 2017 at Lucas Oil Stadium in

Indianapolis. This year’s theme is “Called.” Once again, our CRUX Youth

Ministry will send a delegation to NCYC.

A past participant shares, “The most significant part of the weekend was

when all 25,000 people got on their knees, in complete silence, for time of adoration. Love seemed to be overflowing from the stadium and there was a

reverence present that I had never felt before. God was definitely there. NCYC

strengthened my faith and gave me a deeper appreciation for the Catholic

Church .”

Teens and adults interested in

being part of the MSW Delegation to NCYC should contact Helen Megally

Stewardship Corner

The word “repent” means to turn from sin, to change actions. When it comes to change, do we take responsibility for change or do we think that others have to change instead? Change that is permanent comes from within, we must take control and be disciplined. Remember though that we are not alone, Jesus is there to help lighten the load.

Rose for Life A MSW Respect Life Ministry Activity This week’s Rose for Life at Mary’s shrine is donated by Yolanda & Frank DePaul in celebration of Anne & Joseph Egan’s 23rd Wedding Anniversary. This week’s Rose for Life at St. Joseph’s shrine is donated by the DePaul Family invoking St. Joseph’s blessing for spiritual and physical health. To honor Mary, Seat of Wisdom, our parish patroness and St. Joseph, Protector of the Holy Family, single long-stemmed roses will be placed at both shrines each week before the weekend liturgies. The roses symbolize the Church’s respect for life at all stages and the hope that abortion will soon be a thing of the past. Each week, two roses are dedicated to loved ones by families or members of our parish. If you wish to donate a rose, please call Becky Roller at (847)825-1353. A donation of $5 is requested per rose.
