Passing It On

Faith Formation

As I was preparing for the virtual May Crowning ceremony that will be posted this coming week, I was reminded of a collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Throughout its history the Church has shown a special love and devotion to Mary. The collection of Masses focuses attention on various titles Mary has been given by believers from many lands in different ages.

Among the many titles under which Mary is venerated is the title “Health of the Sick.” In Mary, God has provided a patron for the sick – she shines as a sign of health, healing, and hope. At the same time, she is for the sick, and for all, a model of acceptance of God’s will and cooperation with God’s plan. In this time of COVID-19, we sorely need a model and an intercessor.

This is the opening prayer for the Mass of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Health of the Sick:

Lord our God, in answer to the prayers of the blessed and ever-virgin Mary in her glory, grant to us your servants, unfailing health in body and mind, freedom from sorrow in this life and everlasting joy in heaven, We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen

When we consider Mary, we must do so in the context of her relationship to Jesus. Mary is a model, not because of the great things that she did, but because she heard and responded to God’s call in Jesus. Mary points to Jesus the healer.

Because we cannot achieve absolute and perfect healing on our own, God sent Jesus as physician of body and soul. Moved by compassion, Jesus healed sick people and forgave sins. Therefore, the healing that Jesus offers affects our entire human nature: body, mind, and spirit. Through Jesus’ resurrection, the human condition is totally changed: oppression becomes liberation, ignorance gives way to truth, sickness yields to health, death succumbs to life, and slavery to sin becomes a share in the divine nature.

Sick people in our world today flock to Mary in great numbers, often going to shrines where the sick have been healed. One such example is Lourdes in France, where Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette. Many sick and infirm are among the pilgrims who journey to Lourdes for prayer.

Of all the moments in Mary’s life, one stands out as a paradox. At the foot of the cross, Mary stood with the disciple John. Jesus said to the disciple, “Behold your mother.” And to his mother he said, “Behold your Son.” Because of that moment, Mary is honored as Mother of the Church. Today the Church’s ministry is challenged, but not thwarted, by COVID-19 with Mary as patron.

In still another image, the gospel tells of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. There was no social distancing in this scene. That visit should remind us of the courage of all those who minister to COVID-19 patients. It also serves as a reminder that we should continue to pray for the sick and, when it is safe to do so, we should visit them, practicing the Corporal Works of Mercy.

Fr. Jerry Gunderson

Musings of a New Priest In the Beginning

Reflections from Father Derek Best. News. Ever. Since we can’t physically attend Mass, found just the thing... The Liturgical Institute on the campus of Mundelein Seminary has a FREE 5- part course entitled, “An Introduction to the Sacred Liturgy.” Over the coming weeks, I’ll share a reflection on each part in hopes of bringing to light the beauty of the Mass. Here are instructions how to sign up. 1. Go to https://liturgy.teachable.com/ 2. Scroll down and click on the picture with

the caption “An Introduction to the Sacred Liturgy.”

3. Enter your name, email, create a password and re-enter it.

4. Agree to Terms of Use and Sign up. 5. An email will be sent to you with a

button “Access Course.” 6. Input your email and password and

you’re ready for Class #1! This will be a truly excellent opportunity. Dr. Carstens is a gifted speaker and you’ll feel like you’re actually in seminary. (Not sure if you consider that a good thing…I do!)

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Derek

Happy Easter Everyone!!! Yes…that’s right…it’s still Easter…50 days of Easter celebration! And to remind us all that we don’t have to be afraid to continue to celebrate the resurrection, here is an Easter playlist for y’all. You can find all these sweet tunes on YouTube or Spotify. Enjoy! In Christ Alone sung by Keith & Kristyn Getty A great Easter praise and worship song to get your feet wet before diving into the classics. Alleluia, Sing to Jesus sung by King’s College Choir Truly lifts the soul to the heights…but not too much. Crown Him With Many Crowns sung by Westminster Abbey A hymn truly deserving of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. My Redeemer Lives sung by Hillsong Raise the banner and blast this song for all of The Ridge to hear. Easter Oratio by Johann Sebastian Bach For a true Easter hipster, loving traditional Easter music before it was it was cool. Resurrection Day sung by Matt Maher Two Words: Matt. Maher. Fr. Tim

All is secure. Mr. Pete checks the doors. Mr. Alex comes Tuesdays, To check all the floors. The heat turned way down, The building is cold. Where has everyone gone? Who could have foretold? But school is indeed open! The teachers are there, Zooming with students, Their faces “On Air.”

Make a Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if you were already

there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Regarding the Sacrament of Reconciliation When penitents’ access to the sacrament is restricted, they can be assured that their sins are forgiven if they make an Act of Contrition with a firm resolve to approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation after the stay-at-home order is lifted.

Act of Contrition (Traditional)

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin.

Amen.

Act of Contrition ( Alternate Version)

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong, and failing to do good, I have sinned against you, whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy.

The Reason for Our Hope “What is the reason for your hope?” Imagine somebody coming up to you and asking you that question. Not “What are you hoping for?” or “What are you hoping to do?” No, this isn’t about our desires for possessions or aspirations for life, it’s “Why do you hope?” Peter today tells us that we ought to be ready to give an answer to this question. Truth be told, few of us spend much time thinking about why we hope. Luckily, the scriptures today give us our answers. We hope because Christ suffered for us, in order that we might come to God. We hope because we know that, in the Spirit, God grants us another Advocate through Christ to remain with us always. No matter what we might hope for, whatever we might hope to do, we must always first know and proclaim the reason for our hope: the presence of God in Christ, with us through the power of the Spirit.
