2 “Christ governs all things with love and justice. ” - Pope Francis November 25, 2018

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners, I hope you all had a Blessed Thanksgiving Holiday and are ready of the upcoming Advent Season and Christmas. Below I came across this alert from the Police Department with some valuable safety tips. I hope you find it helpful. Have a Blessed Week.

Fr. Harrigan - The Pastor Christmas Safety Tips from the Department

The following Holiday Safety Tips are recommended by the Police Department, to contribute to the safety and security of our residents during this Christmas season. The season is always a special time of year. It is also a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. We can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware.

When Driving * Avoid driving alone or at night. * Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti- theft device. * If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area. * Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows. * Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked. * Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside. * Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight. * Be sure to locate your keys prior to going to your car. * Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. * When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. * Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area. * Ask mall or store security for an escort before leaving your shopping location.

Automated Teller Machine (ATM) * If you must use an ATM, choose one that is located inside or a well-lighted location. Withdraw only the amount of cash you need. * Protect your PIN by shielding the ATM keypad from anyone who is standing near you.

When Shopping * Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member. * Avoid wearing expensive jewelry. * Even though you are rushed and thinking about a thousand things, stay alert to your surroundings. * Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. * Pay for purchases with a check or credit card when possible. * Keep cash in your front pocket. * Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home. * Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas, transportation terminals, bus stops, on buses and other rapid transit. * Avoid overloading yourself with packages. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps. * Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, "con-artists" may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

November 25, 2018 “Jesus Christ, Lord of all things!” - St. Agatha 3

While At Home * Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house, even for a few minutes. * When leaving home for an extended time, have a neighbor or family member watch your house and pick up your newspapers and mail. * Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer. * Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied. * Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home. * When setting up a Christmas tree or other holiday display, make sure doors and passageways are clear inside your home. * If you use lights on your Christmas tree ensure the wiring is not damaged or frayed. Frayed or damaged wiring can cause a fire. When Strangers are at Your Door * Be aware that criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts. * It is not uncommon for criminals to take advantage of the generosity of people during the holiday season by soliciting donations door-to- door for charitable causes although no charity is involved. * Ask for their identification, and find out how the donated funds will be used. If you are not satisfied, do not donate. * Donate to a recognized charitable organization. When Hosting a Party * Have non-alcoholic beverages available for party guests. * Arrange for an official designated driver for your party who will not drink at all. When Attending a Party * Know your safe limit. * Never drink and drive.

Your Safety is Our Priority.

Hotel safety tips for the holiday season.

Thanksgiving and Christmas are popular travel times, as people gather with family and friends to celebrate the holidays. For many people, that means trading in the routines and established safety practices of home for time spent in a hotel. If you and your children are staying in a hotel, take a few minutes to go over the escape route in the event of a fire or emergency. Show your children how to dial out from the room —to call 911.

Para obtener una copia del artículo completo de VIRTUS® “Family Travel and Vacation Safety (Are We There Yet?)” (Seguridad en viajes y vacaciones familiares ¿Ya llegamos?), visite http://www.la- archdiocese.org/ org/ protecting/Pages/VIRTUS- Current-Online- Articles.aspx.

November 25, 2018 “It is better to be a child of God than king of the whole world.” - St. Aloysius Gonzaga 5

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Community,

On October 3, 1789, President George Washington declared a day of national observance for “public thanksgiving and prayer” devoted to “the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.” Washington saw a nation tired and weary from war and strife, and he sought to guide their hearts toward what is right and rejuvenating for the benefit of all. It is truly our hope that this last Thursday, as you sat with family and friends, enjoying the time together, that a moment was taken to remind each other that God’s graces have been bestowed upon us as a nation, all people, and that is the true calling for Thanksgiving.

Each month, the children and faculty of MSSE focus on a single virtue from amongst the many taught within our curriculum. Throughout the month, teachers used a variety of strategies to weave that virtue throughout their daily lessons, always looking for the students that best model it for their peers. October’s Virtue of the Month was Work and the Virtue awards will be presented to those students at our 8:00 AM school assembly on Monday, Nov. 26, alongside our Trimester 1 academic awards. Please join us.

MSSE is accepting applications for our PreK thru 8th Grade classes. Financial Aid and sliding Tuition scale are possible with completed application; please call our Office (310.831.0875) to arrange for a tour and information.

God bless!

As we celebrate the end of the Liturgical Year and the Feast of Christ our King, let us pause and take time to thank God for all the blessings we have received during the past year. Many of those blessings were the simple, ordinary graces of each day that we often do not even notice.

Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be to our God forever and ever. Revelation 7:12

The Rite of Acceptance for RCIA will take place on Sunday, December 2 at the 9:00 am Mass.
