MARCH 11, 2018 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT
A VIEW FROM THE PEW
For the Month of March, 2018 Month of Saint Joseph
That the Church may appreciate the urgency of formation in spiritual discernment, both on the
personal and communitarian levels.
Holy Father’s Intention Today’s Sunday Readings
First Reading: 2Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23
Second Reading: Ephesians 2:4-10 Gospel: John 3:14-21
Sunday, March 11, 2018 Reflection (4th Sunday of Lent - Laetare Sunday)
Second Scrutiny of the Elect
Be the Change
Having facts on hand is not equivalent to “getting it”: that is, really perceiving the ramifications of what we know. We all suffer from a rash of too much information. What are we supposed to do about famine, stranded refugees, all the humani-tarian crises of our era? What’s to be done about natural disasters, gun violence, global warming, and children neglected and abused in our own cities? Jesus comes to heal our blindness, and to bring us into the light. Once we see, we are called to do. “You were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.” (John 9:31)
Lenten Reflection Help Carry Our Cross
“Worship Him who was hung on the cross because of you, even if you are hanging there yourself.” Saint Gregory Nazianzen The cross is a great privilege for it blesses us with the assurance of what really matters in life-- what is REAL. The cross gives us the opportunity to encounter reality and to enter into reality like Christ and with Christ. Without the constant, daily experience of the cross, we would lose touch with this saving reality and become lax in our understanding and efforts. We ask the Lord to bless all our experiences of the cross this day and throughout the holy season of Lent.
Youth Challenge of the Week: Our Gospel reading today includes verse John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” We learn that all who live the truth come to the light. How can we live this out in our everyday life and week ahead? 1. Remember the truth is that God loves you. He wants you to live authentically in every aspect of your life, while you are at school, home, work, and extracurricular activities. When you wake up every morning this week or before you go to bed, read the verse John 3:16. 2. Meditate on it and come up with a tangible way to live your life as a reflection of Jesus love. For example, talk to someone who needs a friend, reach out to someone who is having a hard time, hold the door open for someone, greet someone with a smile.

Lenten Recollection
Tuesday, March 20, 2018
As part of our Lenten journey, please join us for an evening of Rec-ollection on Tuesday, March 20th, 6:30 pm in the Church. Feel free to bring your family and friends. It is such an honor and privilege to welcome, as our esteemed keynote speaker, the Very Reverend Mon-
signor Gary Secor, Vicar General/Moderator of the Curia and Pastor, Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace. Since most of us find that we often wander from God’s path, Lent becomes that second chance to “return to God with our whole heart.” Let’s journey together through this annual second chance by attending what promises to be an evening to remember. ___________________________________________
Scrutinies...For MSOS Elect and For All of Us
A special segment of Lent are the three Sundays prior to Easter (called Scrutinies) where both our Catechumens, also called Elect, (pictured at left) and each of us are given the opportunity to hear the gospel texts of the Samari-tan woman at the well (symbolizing water), the man born blind (symbolizing light), and the raising of Lazarus (symbolizing life). A better understanding of a “scrutiny” is a prayer prayed for our “Elect”...offering community support as they seek to be part of our Church here at MSOS. Catechumens preparing to receive the Sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and First Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil, March 31, 2018 include: JAN BOIVIN, SEAWOO AIDEN CHO, AMELIA MITSUE HOLLAR, HOLLY UILANI MORIKAMI and KIANI KEIKO MORIKAMI.
Lenten Penance Service Tuesday, March 13, 2018
“Renew Our Hearts, O Lord!”
Reconciliation is an experience of the gift of God’s boundless mercy. Not only does it free us from our sins, but it also challenges us to have the same kind of compassion and forgiveness for those who sin against us. We obtain new insight into the words of the Prayer of St. Francis: “It is in pardoning that we are pardoned.” A great way to grow in holiness is to receive the Sacrament of Confession (also known as Reconciliation or Penance). Please join us on Tuesday, March 13th at 6:15 pm in the Church.
