Along with the longer days and warmer weather comes the end of yet another school year. We, at Mary Ward, can close our doors knowing that the 2009-10 school year was a good one. The stories and pictures within this Newsletter only capture some of the events that have taken place in the last third of the school year. As you can see, it has been as busy as usual. We are so fortunate to have such a dedicated staff who continuously search for various ways to allow our stu-dents to get involved. We are also fortunate to have a group of students who never hesitate to suggest new activities and events.

I invite all parents to enjoy this Newsletter with your children, and allow them to share their stories and re-live the events with you. I encourage you to do what you can to get your children, in whatever grade, to get involved in one or more of the many activities offered at Mary Ward. Their involvement will only positively add to their High School experience.

At graduation, we said farewell to over 200 students who will leave our school to pursue their post-secondary plans. We also bid farewell to the teachers who served our school in an occasional role throughout the year. Thank you to Tawnee Collymore, Anne Marie Davies, Sal Furnari, Patrick McAlpine, Rosanna Parise, Jerry Paterna, and Lisa Weathers. We thank you for your contributions, and hope to welcome you back to our community in the near future.

We celebrated, albeit reluctantly, with Ms. Cassibault and Mr. Cerre who have served our community for 20 + years, and who will be enjoying their Ward memories into their retirement. We thank you both for your dedication and commit-ment, and look forward to welcoming you back home for what we hope will be many visits.

We welcome back Anita De Oliveira who will be returning to Ward in September after her 3 year secondment to York University in the teacher training program.

Mr. Chen, Ms. Keenan, and I have enjoyed our first year together and appreciate the support given by students, staff, and parents. Our learning curve was steep, but your support made it worth the effort. We look forward to working with and learning from you in the future.

I would like to thank the members of our Catholic School Advisory Council, particularly our Co-Chairs, Mrs. Terry Pastore and Mr. Dennis Hastings. Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled for September 22, 2010, and we look forward to electing our new Council at that time. Please mark this date on your cal-endar and be sure to attend.

I hope the summer is an enjoyable one for all, and that you make the most of the longer days to spend quality time with your family and friends.

All God’s blessings.PATRICIA COBURN

Christmas arrived early at Mary Ward, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Tony Cabrio, Facilities Specialist at Nestlé Canada Inc. Nestlé underwent some re-structuring in their offices, and found they had no use for their old office furniture, including credenzas, 6 - foot wooden desks, chairs, filing cabinets, tables, and book cases. Mr. Cabrio thought these items could be put to use at our school, and he was right. Many departments were excited about the opportunity to renovate. When you have an opportunity, please stop by the business, special education, or math areas to see the final product. The picture below shows the newly furnished business area.Thank you, Mr. Cabrio, for thinking of us. It was a great year-end present!

The Friends of Mary Ward is a charitable organization that was set up several years ago to support and en-hance our students’ learning experiences. We are able to provide tax receipts for all personal and corporate donations. Your kind donations will allow us to help fund enrichment activities, such as the trips that our band students make to participate in international competitions, and the art students to New York. Besides raising the profile of our school on the international stage, students benefit by developing poise, confidence, and self-esteem. Please make cheques payable to “Friends of Mary Ward”. Thank you.

introducing the TC D S B enterprise portalThe Toronto Catholic District School Board is pleased to be moving forward with the development of an En-terprise Portal (EP) for the entire system in an effort to improve communication among parents, staff and students and provide a more positive experience for all visitors to the TCDSB public website.

how will parents/stakeholders stay informed about the portal?Regular updates will be available through local school communications and the board’s website at www.tcdsb.org.

how will a portal enhance the learning experience?Discussions will continue among the various stake-holders—students, parents, staff (teaching and non-teaching) and trustees about the possibilities. The portal will facilitate collaboration and communica-tion among teachers, parents and students.

why a portal? From a user perspective, the portal will allow indi-viduals to quickly access up-to-date and relevant in-formation online, with the ability to customize the type of information that they wish to receive. It will also eliminate the clutter of information sent out in so many different formats. No matter what your role within the TCDSB community, the portal will provide one-stop, self-service shopping for the in-formation and data you need to perform your role. A portal will integrate electronic communica-tions such as monthly calendars, newsletters, photographs and memos easily without hav-ing to worry about the format of the various files. The portal is an environmentally friendly Green initiative which will reduce the amount of paper consumed within the Board for communications such as newsletters to the home, Director’s Bulle-tins, pay statements, and other forms and reports. In summary, portal technology will combine com-munications, collaboration, document management, structured data from HR, student, financial and facili-ties applications, calendars, news and events into one simple web interface that will engage all our users, whether they are school staff, parents or students.

what is a portal?A portal is a web-based point of entry to an orga-nization’s collection of information, resources and tools. Members of a portal have access to resources based on their credentials and role (as staff, parent, student etc.). Consider how you enter a large office building, check in with security, and proceed to ac-cess physical resources such as meeting rooms, doc-uments and tools. In much the same way, you will have access to digital resources when logging in to the TCDSB portal. Your login will provide you with ac-cess to the resources you need, all in a self-service environment.

It was an exciting spring term in the French Department. Alfred Chen, having placed first in the TCDSB French Public Speaking Contest, went on to compete in the Provincial Speech Competition at Glen-don College and placed third in the Province winning the Bronze Medal and 250$ prize. Bravo, Al-fred! He was also honoured with a certificate of recognition from the TCDSB for his second place fin-ish last year! There was more profit to be had as Yulenka Rebello and Alexander De Pompa both placed first for their poetry submissions to Prix Jeunes Ecrivains, OECTA’s French writing competition. They re-ceived certificates and 100$ each for their efforts and their entries went on to the Provincial level as well.

Other exciting events include the very successful French Pavillion for International Day where an exciting performance of Can-Can dancers and various chanteurs wowed the crowd. After each performance, guests were invited into our charming French Bistro, complete with a crepe cooking station and other treats.

Both Junior and Senior French students had the opportunity to attend French plays in the spring term, both by the French master Molière. A small group of Senior French students also participated in Le Français pour l’avenir, a forum of workshops promoting the French language, and had the opportunity to meet with Olympic athletes, actors, activists among other fascinating presenters. Finally, our Grade 12 students had a delicious luncheon and culinary presentation at the very elegant Auberge du Pommier to celebrate their four years of studies en français.

new ‘health ward’ at mary ward

On May 14, Grade 11 Physics students spent a day at Buttonville Airport learning about the Physics of Flight. The highlights of the trip included flying a simulator at Seneca College's school of Avia-tion, a visit to the weather station, and a short flight in a Cessna 172 airplane by their Physics teacher Mr Cuschieri.

While you were busy rushing to write tests and complete late units, the Science Department at Mary Ward was under construction! Originally the idea of Mrs.Poole, designed by Miss Collymore, and finished by Sher-een Harris, Christina Chong, Princess Cabrera and Kadeen Lawson, a NEW area in Science; the ‘Health Ward’ is now available for use. This room is located in the Science Seminar room and features a biology-inspired mural of the circulatory system, an electrocardiograph, and just some of the fundamentals of both Chemistry and Physics! There is also a bulletin board which will be reserved for articles and pamphlets of new cutting edge scientific research and ideas in all disciplines of Science and Health!

As Science is a high-traffic area, the Health Ward is perfect for those who need a quiet space to study, an area to discuss or plan a major group presentation, watch a course film, or simply to read. Now hold on just a minute! The Health Ward is NOT available freely. There are sign up sheets and the teacher on the floor MUST provide their signature upon entrance and exit.

Are you curious yet? Drop by and check out the new Science Health Ward and give us your feedback!

canadian and world studies

The Canadian and World Studies Fair featured grade 9 Geography students’ board game creations. The students had fun learning about Canada’s role in international organizations, while playing the amazing games they created. The Fair also hosted the grade 10 History debates and presentations. In May, the students in grade 11 Travel and Tourism went to the Metro Toronto Zoo. The gorillas and the polar bears were definitely a highlight of the day! Grade 11 Law students put their knowledge of trial proceedings to the test during their Mock Trial presentations. Senior Canadian and World Studies students taking Politics, International Law, World History and World Issues showed off their debating skills in the Senior Pro-Con Forum Debate in May. Looking ahead to next school year, our department is excited about our new course offering, which is an interdisciplin-ary Genocide Studies course! Also, preparations are under way for our first ever grade 10 Canadian History Ottawa trip for November, 2010. Students will earn 3 units while participating in the trip activities which include participating in the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Capital Hill on November 11!We are also planning for our spring 2011 Senior Canadian and World Studies trip to Washington, D.C., which will include highlights such as a tour of Gettysburg and the Holocaust Museum.

UN trip: new york MARCH 28TH - APRIL 2ND 2010

This year the Loretto Sisters have been celebrating the 400th anniversary of their founder, Mary Ward. As a part of these celebrations, an amazing opportunity became available for our students. Twelve students were invited to travel to New York and participate in a series of seminars by the Partnership for Global Justice. These seminars examined issues around the Millennium Development Goals. Some of the topics included the United Nations, Sustainable Development, Indigenous Peoples, and Poverty and Homelessness. In addition, students were able to tour the United Nations and meet with members from the Swaziland, Hungary or Zaimbian missions to the United Nations. Students learned about the issues these countries are facing (with a focus on the Millennium Development Goals) and were able to ask ques-tions and engage in a discussion with the representatives of these countries. Students also had the opportunity to see a Broadway Play, tour the city, and visit “Top of the Rock.”

english department A dramatic start to the school year began with students from Grade 9 through to 12 participating in trips to Stratford, Ontario, to view several plays. Students particularly enjoyed the wit of Oscar Wilde and saw theatre in a way they hadn’t expected with The Importance of Being Ernest. The Shakespearean tragedy of Macbeth, and the modern tragedy of West Side Story allowed for an appreciation of more intense drama. Later in the year, students went to a production of Romeo and Juliet, at Marshall Mc Luhan C.S.S., and a production of Hamlet, at the Classical Theatre Project, in downtown Toronto. Later in the year, Tracy Ampofoh won second place in the TCDSB speech competition.

The English Department proudly announced the birth of Ms. Natasha Patel’s son, Luca, in October, and wel-comed Ms. Lisa Weathers, a Mary Ward graduate, as the replacement for her leave. As well, we were fortunate to have Mr. Patrick Mc Alpine and Ms. Anne-Marie Davies join the department for the year. We thank Ms. Su-sanna Mak for all of her contributions to the English Department over the past 11 years, and wish her well as she begins a half year sabbatical until next February.

ward artists ‘storm’ the basementOnce again, Mary Ward Artists in virtually every creative dis-cipline are to be congratulated for their amazing multi-me-dia exhibition, Tempest. Large crowds of art lovers from our school community and far beyond enjoyed the labryinth of installations as the 'storm' of creativity spilled into virtually every corner of the basement. From compelling videos and photographs, to incredible drawings and paintings, Tempest certainly made its mark. Future fashion stars displayed their garments while the expert carpenters of our Tech program exhibited their finely crafted constructions. The show also welcomed several hundred visiting elementary schools who were given expert tours by teams of artists. Congratulations to all participating artists and in particular, a word of thanks goes to our excellent 'Arts Administration' Team for a very smoothly run show. We look forward to next year's 'word' and the show that will grow around it!

June 24th wrapped up our end of the year activities with a farewell barbe-cue with all the staff who have been so helpful with us over this past school year. This June we spent two weeks travelling the GTA, visiting Fairview Mall, the Toronto Fire Hall on Harbourfront, the Zoo, Milliken Park and the YMCA Cedar Glen Camp in Schomberg for our annual overnight adventure. Us-ing the TTC, cars, school buses and good ol’fashioned walking, the students spent hours outdoors. Thanks to Mrs Hagarty, on Wednesday June 16th, we were able to receive a tour of the Harbourfront FireHall and EMS station. Captain Mike Hagarty showed the gang the EMS truck and how to use the fire extinguisher just before taking us on the Fireboat docked outside. As has been our tradition for the past four years, we ended our year on an over-night to celebrate and put our skills into action. At the YMCA Cedar Glen we faced torrential rain (while playing games indoors), built shelters in the woods, fought our fears by climbing the high ropes and put on our talent show by the campfire. We had amazing experiences and look forward to a safe and restful summer. See you all in September!!

skills canadaOn Monday, May 17, a bus carrying Team TCDSB headed to Waterloo, Ontario for the Ontario Technological Skills Competition held at RIM Park. On that bus were six Mary Ward students participating in five very different competi-tions, all determined to do well for their school board, their school and, of course, themselves. Kyan D’Angelo was the youngest from Mary Ward, only in grade 10, he was compet-ing in the IT Office Software Application competition. Hazel Llanes and Sasha Soraine, both grade 11 students, compet-ed in the Website Development and Job Interview competi-tions respectively. Raymond Fung, Filip Kapera and Arthur Kurek rounded out Mary Ward’s competitors with Raymond competing in Cabinetmaking and Filip and Arthur in Team Carpentry. Making it to the provincial level was already an accomplishment in itself as everyone had to win within the TCDSB before moving on. Tuesday, May 18 was an eventful day for all as students participated in over 60 different skilled trades competi-tions. Thousands of spectators watched as competitors performed a variety of different tasks from cooking to woodworking, 3D animation to landscaping. By day’s end, everyone looked back at what they had accomplished, anx-iously awaiting the results that wouldn’t come until the next day. Wednesday, May 19 saw competitors, teachers and parents alike file into the Waterloo Memorial Sports Complex for the closing ceremonies and awards presentations. Team TCDSB racked up a total of nine medals; three Gold, three Silver and three Bronze. From Mary Ward, Filip Kapera and Arthur Kurek won Gold in Team carpentry and Kyan D’Angelo won Silver in IT Office Software Application. Hazel and Sasha both finished in the Top 10 in their competitions and Ray-mond Fung finished in the Top 20 in Cabinetmaking. All in all, it was a very successful year for the TCDSB as well as for Mary Ward. In an email sent to everyone in the TCDSB, Luciano Di Lore-to, OYAP Project Leader, congratulated all the teachers and competitors saying, “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the TCDSB Skills Canada participants for their outstanding achievement in this year's Skills Canada Com-petitions at RIM Park in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario. With three Gold Medal winners, three Silver Medal winners, and three Bronze Medal winners, one could say that the TCDSB "owned the podium"! All students in all the competitions excelled with grace and dignity and represented the TCDSB in a fashion that every educator in our Board would have been extremely proud of.”His words couldn’t be more accurate as Team TCDSB stole the show in Waterloo.

Seven issues later, and now, it is my time to pass on the torch as Editor-in-Chief. Working with the newspaper through-out my entire high school career has been a very rewarding and incredible experience. The quantity of work that I have seen published still manages to amaze me, and for this, I am truly grateful to have taken part in all twelve of the publica-tions Mary Ward’s award-winning newspaper has produced within the past four years. The dedication that I have witnessed from the members of the Planet proves that Mary Ward’s tri-annual publication is one to credit and respect. I have never encountered a group of people so committed to ensuring that the success of the paper improves within the distribution of our publications. The long and late nights spent in Comm. Tech dem-onstrate the dedication and devotion of the Planet members who volunteer their personal time to contribute to their school community. It was a privilege and an honour to work with individuals of such high talent and commitment to an extra-curricular activity of this sort. And of course, the prestigious results from the Toronto Star High School Newspaper Awards were rewarding as well. The newspaper has definitely helped me in more ways than one. Surely, my writing and editing skills have improved. However, it is my skills gained from this leadership experience that have helped me to become a better person and most importantly, impact others on their journey of becoming leaders as well. I will take the knowledge I have attained from this spectacular publication, and use it during the next chapter of my life throughout my future endeavours.I have a great deal of confidence that the newspaper staff will continue to produce exceptional articles, creative layouts, intriguing graphic designs, and high quality photographs. I am honoured to pass on the responsibilities of the Planet to Future Editor-in-Chief, Alex De Pompa, and Future Co-Editor, Michael Chen. I am positive that these two individuals will steer the Mary Ward Planet in the right direction and continue the legacy this publication is known for.Readers, it is your job to contribute to this newspaper to allow for great success in the future. Publish your work and continue to make an impact on others through your talents. Provide your opinions on the newspaper and express sug-gestions for improvement for future publications. Without your work, the Mary Ward Planet would not have been as successful as it is today.Thank you, Mary Ward Planet, for an unforgettable and memorable experience. I wish you the best of luck in the future, and don’t worry, I will be the first to tackle those “impossible” Sudokus.

SACThe Student Council closed off the school year with two important events. A twist was placed on the tradi-tional end-of-the-year bbq, as council members organized a talent show for everyone to enjoy. Students from all grades auditioned to have their talents showcased to the student body. The entertaining event closed with a thrilling performance from our very own dance team 'Adrenalyn'. The Student Council elections were a wonderful success, as many students took the initiative to create innovative and successful campaigns. This year's council delighted the audience at the end of the elections with an upbeat performance, introducing themselves and ceremoniously passing the torch to our new president, Christina Chong.Staff advisors Mrs. Pezzetta, Ms. Arturi and Ms. Albert would like to commend all students who had the cour-age to run for next year's student council. To the new council winners, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and look forward to working with you in the new year. Finally, we would like to recognize and bid a fond farewell to our SAC graduates: grade 12reps Tracy and Cynthia, External Affairs Chesca, Vice President Rhea Rebello and President Filipe D'Souza. Your leadership and energy was incredible this year. You were excellent role models to the younger SAC members and your presence will definitely be missed. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

ward deca goes to kentuckyFor the first time since we began our chapter at Mary Ward, the DECA@WARD Chapter qualified for the Inter-national Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Louisville, Kentucky. On April 22-29th, Sele Akioyamen and Ann de Sequeira along with staff advisor, Ms. Morra, joined over 400 delegates from across Ontario to participate in this year’s ICDC. Each year, ICDC hosts thousands of students across North America and the world to compete on an International level in their categories relating to business and marketing. Ann and Sele made Mary Ward history by being the first to qualify at the International level. Although, they did not take home any hardware, the experience of competing at that level was invaluable and energizing for our fu-ture DECA@WARD Chapter. We look forward to beginning again in September with our new exec team – new members are always welcome.

reachThe School Reach Team enjoyed an exciting season this past winter and spring. Sadly, despite reaching second place by the semi-finals, the team slipped to a disappoint-ing fourth place. Still, the team should be proud of their accomplishments.

Congratulations to the competitive team of: Michael Chiu; Anthony Duen; Anne de Sequeira; Jacob Fiorino; Maggie Keenan; Dorothy Kuczyunski; Cindy Liang; Samson Ma, and Tiffany Yeung, and coaches: Mrs. Carol Holmes and Mr. David Simone.

This year our group decided to focus on raising money and awareness about Kenya. The group leaders prepared presentations about some of the social justice issues in Kenya. This included looking at poverty levels and access to water and education. The students raised over $2,000 through a civvies day, selling baked goods and freezies, and participating in a vow of silence. The money will be given to Free The Children in support of initiatives in Ke-nya. Students also created awareness about some local issues in Toronto. In the fall, Free The Children members led a school wide canned food drive called Halloween for Hunger. Our school community collected 1,560 lbs of food for The Daily Bread food bank. In addition, students organized a successful warm clothing drive this winter for the Out of the Cold program. These students are choosing to take action about both local and global issues and are learning to become active global citizens in the process.

The members of OKOF have had a fabulous year! The focus of their education and awareness campaign for the 2009-2010 school year was The Children of Rwan-da-15 years after the Genocide. OKOF raised aware-ness through morning reflections, a guest speaker and the showing of the film Shake Hands with the Devil. In addition, approximately $1500 was raised through a civvies day to be donated to the Hope for Rwanda’s Children Fund. As well, OKOF collected eight large boxes of school supplies and two large boxes of stuffed toys to be sent to the King Faisal Children’s Hospital in Rwanda. OKOF also organized and hosted “A Rumble in the Den” a student versus teacher basketball game to raise money to cover the cost of shipping the boxes to Rwanda. Congratulations OKOF!

Green Quest pulled out all of the stops during Earth Week 2010, unveiling a new bike rack and a new recycling station for batteries, compact fluorescent light bulbs, cell phones, toner cartridges and pop tabs. Printers capable of dedicated double-sided printing were installed in the science and English departments. "Earth" was shown at lunch with cupcakes and organic goodies to eat. Buttons, with earth-saving messages designed by students, were sold to raise money for Ontario Nature. The civvies day earned money for the water and tree-planting organizations that the school supported in the advent service projects. The week was capped by a highly attended 20 minute make-over. Our message was cer-tainly heard during Earth Week, and our group was very pleased with the enthusiasm shown by the school community. Krystiana Garde-Lyn, the Chair of Earth Week events, is to be commended for her organization and enthusiasm, which contributed greatly to the success of the week.

Early May found Green Quest students, along with many science students, earning quest units by cleaning the shores of Petticoat Creek Conservation area. One group of students weeded, designed and planted the gardens around the Conservation Area's new sign at the entrance. Our efforts will live on!

On May 11, we welcomed a team of inspectors from the school board and Ontario Ecoschools for a tour of our school. Our students proudly displayed their efforts this year, discussed their plans for next year, and described the many "green" procedures in place in our school. As a result of their hard work, Mary Ward has again been awarded the Silver level of the Ontario EcoSchools program.

On May 19 a small group of Green Quest students went to Ryerson University to participate in a Youth Water Symposium where they learned of the many environmental problems and social justice issues related to the bottled water industry. They learned a great deal, were inspired by the activities, and are keen to focus on this issue next year.

We thank the students for their dedication throughout the school year, and we welcome all students that wish to join our group. Next year promises to be busy...the Great Canadian Shoreline clean-up in our own backyard in September, and Waste Reduction Week in October will kick-start our efforts to make Mary Ward a greener place to learn and work.

Have a wonderful, safe, and environmentally-friendly summer!Louise Chaput-Ross, Christa Hall, Karen Heisz and Kathy Saran

orienteering clubEvery year the Mary Ward Orienteering club attracts students with a thirst for adventure racing. The sport of orienteering in-volves searching for hidden markers spread out throughout a park while using a contour map and magnetic compass. The club meets at various parks in the GTA and is coached by Mr Cuschieri. Congratulations to this year's participants: Jarrid Datu, Roselle Reyes and Reginald Aparato who participated in the GTA School Orienteering Invitational on Wed, May 19 at Sunny Brook Park.

dragonboat

The Mary Ward Dragon Boat team has come a long way since its humble begin-nings as a crew that consisted of 19 students and 2 coaches six years ago. Now in 2010, dragon boat at Mary Ward has become a full-fledged program with 5 crews involving 102 students from all grades and a coaching staff of 12 commited indi-viduals, made up of teachers and alumni. The team had great showings at both the Pickering and Centre Island regattaas, making Mary Ward a household name amoung students and coaches from other competing schools. Congratulation to all crews - Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase and Interphase - on a great season. Coach Wong and all the coaches are very proud of you.

boys’ rugbyThe Mary Ward Boys' Rugby team completed their second season recently, playing as a varsity team in the se-nior league. With hopes to soon have separate junior and senior teams, the team continues to develop their skills and knowledge of the game. This year's group saw some progress through their hard fought season, with a win against Vanier and advancing to the semi finals, where they lost to JPII. Their amazing ability to pull through and demonstrate some excellent rugby playing despite low numbers and much inexperience is admirable. As the number of players grows, there can only be more success in this team's future. Good luck to the graduating players. We hope you continue to stay involved in the game!!

girls ’ rugbyNow done their third season, the Mary Ward Girls' Rugby team had a rough start but quickly improved to chal-lenge some of the top teams in the league. Though they beat St. Basil's, they missed the playoffs by one spot. As new players entered, the veterans showed clearly that they have really taken to the sport and enhanced their understanding in such a way as to lead newcomers to feel comfortable playing a game that was previ-ously completely unfamiliar to them. Well done to the team and a sad farewell to the graduating "originals" and all other players that will not be back at Ward next year!!

senior boys’ soccerThis year, a young team came together with some seasoned veterans to make a spectacular team. Their tal-ents gelled well together and they hope to intensify their level of play next year. This year’s team was a little too green, and fell short of the playoffs, but they show a lot of potential to be serious competitors in the years to come. Special mention goes out to the team captains Michael Borowski, who commanded the defensive line, Cormac McGee, who coordinated the midfield, and Renaldo Rommeral, who created offensive opportu-nities. Also contributing to the team’s offense was Arthur Kurek and Hozan Dylan, who scored 2 goals apiece. Congratulations on a successful year boys, and best of luck for the years to come.

Mr. Morra and Mr. Vecchiarelli

After a slow start, the varsity girls’ softball team finished strong with a win in their final game of the season, qualifying them for the playoffs. The girls found their stride in the post season and played like true Mary Ward athletes, upsetting two heavily favoured teams to advance to the Tier II finals. There, the team's Cinderella story came to an end with the girls taking home silver medals. With a strong core of returning athletes, the team promises to be competitive next year as well.

Senior badminton team members Raymond Fung, Eric Wong, Judy Tan, and Iris Fok represented the TDCAA at the OFSAA Badminton Championship in Stratford, Ontario. Over 2 days, the boys faced stiff competition, played well, and won 1 game in the C draw. Iris and Judy made it to the quarter fi-nals in the A draw, the highest level of competition, and won 2 of their 4 games. This was the largest contingent of Mary Ward badminton players to participate in OFSAA, Judy and Iris being the first females to represent our school at this ma-jor provincial championship. Congratulations to the players on this important Wolverine achievement and special thanks to alumni and volunteer coaches Aaron Vaz and Daryl Lee, and Jason Li for his support.

Last May 21 was the 2nd Annual Ontario Youth Canoe Marathon championship, held on the canal in the Holland Marsh. The event had 30 paddlers from Mary Ward and Bishop Allen High Schools and two paddlers traveled from Parry Sound for the event. Mary Ward did extremely well considering they only entered 8 students to Bishop Al-len's 22 students. The weather was spectacular and the racers put on an extremely enjoyable event. Only three canoes ended upside down, Chanel blaming Jordan for her swim. It is now your turn to shine. Strive to perform to the best of your abilities. To our senior, graduating athletes, we thank you for representing us well and wearing the MW proudly in competition. Continue to be fine young men and women. We will miss you.
