Dear Parents, As we begin a new year, most people like to start with a New Year’s Resolution. Over the break, I thought that as a school, (collectively), we should do the same. Recently I was reading a new year’s resolution that Pope Francis listed and thought, how appropriate it would be for our school community to follow. When we discuss our code of Conduct, this Resolution flows in beautifully with this document. So, let us ALL try to adhere to this whole school ‘New Year’s Resolution” (The Pope Francis List)

Don’t gossip. Finish your meals. Make time for others. Choose the ‘more humble’ purchase. Meet the poor ‘in the flesh’. Stop judging others. Befriend those who disagree. Stick to your commitments. Make it a habit to ‘ask the Lord’. Be happy.

The commencement of the new school year has been a very smooth one. I was truly amazed at how many happy parents we had in the school grounds on the first day. I wonder why? The students seemed to be happy as well, but I think that their happiness and their parents’ happiness were on two different levels! Our students have certainly begun the year full of energy and seem to be fully focused on their class work. It’s been an encouraging start which I hope will continue throughout the year. BOARD For your knowledge our 2019 Board members are:

Fr Suresh (Parish Priest) Sandro Coniglio Quinton Hoffmann Sue Blair (Parish Rep) Andrea Martin Merrisa McDougall Jarod Avila Fay Valli Patrick Hanna Melanie Eleonora (P&F Rep to the Board) Dave Vallis Daniel Bersan

Mrs Loretta Hackner and Mr Christopher Smith (our Assistant Principals) also attend our meetings and add valuable insight into our discussions. I would again like to thank these wonderful people for their commitment and time to our school. I sincerely look forward to working with you all. At our first meeting later this month executive positions will be decided. Once this occurs I will inform the school community.

PARENT & FRIENDS Last week the executive members of the P&F met for a brief meeting to vote on executive positions. Hence, our P&F Executive Committee for 2019: Chairperson – Adrian Martin (Shared with VP) Vice President – Kate MacRae (Shared with Chair) Treasurer—Marina Raschella Secretary –Mellissa Antoine Board Representative – Melanie Eleonora Class Rep – Lourdes Sasidharan Again, I would like to thank these wonderful people for continuing the tradition of Mary’s Mount parents in building our school community. As per the School Board, I look forward to working with our P&F. PARENT TEACHER INFORMATION EVENINGS. On Wednesday night, this week, we held our annual parent teacher meeting. This, along with parent teacher evenings are very important meetings to attend so that parents are informed of what is planned and organised for their children for the year. As always it was pleasing to see a good number of parents take an interest in their child’s education and attend the evening. By attending the meeting this week, parents were informed of the school goals for the year, various strategies that are being implemented in the school and were made aware of individual class rules and teacher expectations. While it was pleasing to see a good number of parents there, I was a little disappointed that a third of our families didn’t attend nor give an apology. As educators we avail our time to our parents for the education needs of our children, therefore, I stress to all parents the importance of you as parents to show some interest in the education of your child. You do this by attending various meetings or help in the school in a variety of ways. The standards you set are the standards that will influence your children. WORK AROUND THE SCHOOL Over the holidays we had, our carpets cleaned in all rooms and all windows washed. We have also added a few more security cameras around the school, which allows us now to have most areas covered. Unfortunately, we were held up with the progress of the re-surfacing of the courts. The company that we are dealing with had some contractual issues and hence put us behind. We will not be too far off having the courts completed in the near future. The Board and P&F have a few more projects planned for the year. The school community will be informed of these projects in the coming weeks. WELCOME BACK AFTERNOON Please support our P&F this Saturday at our, ‘Welcome Back to School’ Fun Afternoon. This event is a free event for all our families and will be held on the School Oval from 3.00 pm – 6.00 pm. Bring your bathers! Many Blessings. Sandro Coniglio

Six years ago (2013) we kick started our school vegie garden with a $5000 grant from the Medibank Community Fund (MCF). This enabled us to purchase 5 new garden beds, plus soil to fill them and additional materials and supplies needed to start us off. Since then our school vegie garden has provided our school community with much pleasure, learning and fresh vegetables. There have been used in our canteen, sold to parents on market days and been consumed by many children sneaking a strawberry or tomato straight from the garden during their lunch and recess play times. Following on from the STEM program Mrs Branche led with her class last year, our classes this year have begun planning and preparation of their garden beds which is Stage 1 of our vegie gardens. Stay tuned for more updates on this and the progress of the planting which will commence in March. Waste Wise Committee

Cyber News @ MMPS

Last year we ramped up our Cyber Safety sessions and held workshops for students, staff and parents. The workshops were such a great success, and we received such great feedback that in 2019 we have decided to continue this important program and run another Cyber Information night for parents.

Week 4 Wednesday 27 February 2019.

Whether you have a child in Kindy or Year 6 - or you think you have heard it all before—the rapid changing pace of technology means you need to keep on top of technology and ensure you are continually educated and informed of new traps, tips and tools that will help you make navigating the Cyber World with your children easier. Over the past few years we have invested quite a bit in technology at school, and so it is imperative that at least one parent from each family attend this important evening. Jordan Foster from YSafe will once again be returning to host the session in 2019, plus there will be additional guest speakers from Family Zone. It will be an evening not to miss! Please register your attendance via the link here— https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/mmps-cyber-safety-evening-with-family-zone-ysafe-registration-56388468427?utm-medium=discovery&utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&aff=escb&utm-source=cp&utm-term=listing

“Just a note to say that I

attended last night's workshop

and it was really good - lots of

immediate actions to make our

internet usage safer.

Thanks for organising; I

would definitely recommend

and glad I attended.”

“Such a GREAT evening! I

learnt so much. I highly

recommend all parents attend

no matter the age of their

children.”

“So many tips and hints and

conversation starters to go

home and have with my

children. Every parent should

hear this.”

This will save us a lot of time by having everything recorded electronically rather than manually. Thank you to the

Club for helping us out.

Running Club

Our Running Club is now up and running and the feedback from the students who have

been attending has been very positive. We currently have 60 students from Years 1 to 6
