From the President…
Happy New Year to all! We started 2008 with our 50th Anniversary Conference, which was a rousing success. We had a great team who worked many, many hours behind the scenes. It was all worth it! I received many comments from those who attended, but my favorite was from someone whose name is unfamiliar to me. She said that she learned a lot and had a lot of fun, and isn’t that what it’s all about? In addition, Gary Ingle, our MTNA Executive Director, shared the comment that this was “one of my best state conferences ever,” and “it takes a lot to impress me.” Wow! It was great to see everyone there. I have to tell you that next year’s will be even better, so plan on attending! For those who missed the fun or simply want to relive the experience, I’m in the process of putting a CD together, which will be made available to the local association presidents. You will also be able to access our website to view it.
I wish to send a very special thanks to Winifred Hyson who has so generously donated $1,000 to the organization, specifically to benefit the E. R. Davis Competition. The prize money for all places has been increased. Thank you, Winifred, from all of us!
In addition, we received a $50 donation, for the Gertrude Brown Concerto Competition Fund, from a former student of Gertrude Brown. Thank you Avery Allen Cox!
I’m still in the market for recipes. Please take a moment to visit the website at msmta.org, under “What’s New,” and enter your favorite recipe. I am going to start making phone calls to “inspire” more submissions. This will be a great fundraiser, and a good way to share a personal “slice” of each of us!
We are making headway on our Ronald McDonald project. I look forward to sharing each local association’s efforts in making this a great success for our state.
Please note that beginning with this issue a new column will appear entitled “News from the Board.” This will feature business items from the board meetings affecting the entire organization. Make sure you read it to keep abreast of the latest!
We are starting work on a new directory. Please make sure your information is correctly listed on the website. If you have any questions about accessing the website or updating your information, please contact the webmaster at [email protected].
Please remember to check out our website at msmta.org. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the site and appreciate any feedback. In addition, it is my personal goal to have all registration forms online within two years. State Piano Solo registration is NOW AVAILABLE on-line. We are also investigating the possibility of payment online. Stay tuned!
As always, if you have any suggestions, or comments, please contact me at [email protected].
Here’s to a great spring,

NEWS FROM THE BOARD
Our commissioned composer for 2009 will be Dr. Douglas Boyce from Alexandria, VA. If you wish further information, please contact LiLy Chang.
If you need sample theory test CDs, the new contact is Geneva Jones, at 301-706-7349. Her information will be listed in the Student Activity Handbook, which can be found on the website at msmta.org, or on the member search link.
Please check the website for an Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association
high school exam center that was left off of the list in the Student Handbook. It has been listed on the website.
There is a new date for the Chamber Music Festival, chaired by Daniel Lau. The new date is April 20, 2008, with a deadline of March 1. Please check the website for an updated application form. For further information, contact Daniel Lau.
Doug Guiles is chairing a committee to look into judge’s fees for the various competitions. Previously, the Board had approved $25.00/hr. as a standard fee for all events. This has not been strictly followed. It was suggested that fees be raised to $30/hr. His committee will investigate and make a recommendation to the Board.
It was MSP (motioned, seconded and passed) to rescind the $1.00 administration fee for paper applications for all MSMTA events until the 2008-2009 year. This fee will be initiated to encourage on-line applications.
It’s time to update the directory. PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL OF YOUR INFORMATION IS CORRECT. Visit the website at msmta.org, and click the link under Membership Search. Make sure your information is correct. The site allows you to edit your information after you log in.
We will be looking into the possibility of online only newsletters in the Fall. Naturally, this is only possible for members with email addresses. For any members who have concerns over email attachments, the newsletter will continue to be available on the web site. Elimination of printed newsletters will save us a great deal of money; we will discuss this at the next Board meeting.
If you have any suggestions, comments, or concerns, please make sure you talk to your local association president.

AWARDS INCREASED FOR THE DAVID R. HORWITZ MEMORIAL COMPETITION
FOR VIOLIN AND PIANO DUO
Thanks to the generosity of Lashof Violins, the cash prizes awarded to the winners of the David R. Horwitz Memorial Competition for Violin and Piano Duo will be increased to $200.00 for First Place, $150.00 for Second Place, and $100.00 for Third Place.
This increase will take effect for the December 2008 competition.
Lashof Violins, located at One-F East Diamond Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD 20877, 301-330-2606, specializes in violins, violas, cellos, and their bows. Each member of the staff is an instrumentalist and a trained instrument repair technician. Lashof Violins caters to professionals and students of all levels, providing new and preowned quality instruments.
MSMTA is very grateful to our new sponsor, and we encourage our members to keep them in mind when making referrals to students.
A TEACHER’S GENEROSITY
Our E. R. Davis competition cash awards have been substantially increased thanks to the generosity of Winifred Hyson’s gift of $1,000.00. The prize money for this competition has been $100 for first prize, $80 for second, and $60 for third. With Winifred’s contribution to the prize fund, these awards have been increased to $400, $250, and $100, respectively. Thanks so much, Winifred, for your kindness and generosity.
MSMTA RECEIVES DONATION TO CONCERTO FUND
MSMTA is very grateful to Avery Allen Cox for her generous donation to the Gertrude Brown Concerto Competition Fund. Mrs. Cox is a former student of Gertrude Brown during her school years in this area. She is now retired and living in Taos, New Mexico. She saved her MSMTA certificates and adjudication sheets, and found our web site on the Internet, which brought the Concerto Competition to her attention. It is gratifying to know that as teachers, we leave lasting memories in the minds and hearts of our students.

NEW VICE PRESIDENT FOR PUBLICATIONS APPOINTED
Junko Takahashi, president of the Montgomery County Local Association and Registrar of the 2008 MSMTA Conference, has graciously accepted the office of Vice President for Publications. She is replacing Deborah White-Bondhus who has submitted her resignation effective immediately. The Board has voted and approved her appointment to fill out the term since the last election. We are very grateful to Junko for agreeing to accept this position. The next issue will be published in June, following the end of all MSMTA Student Activities for the school year.
All materials for inclusion in the newsletter should now be sent directly to Junko. Mailing directions can be found on the last page of this issue.

2007-2008 CONFERENCE
“MSMTA…CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF DEDICATED TEACHING”
UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
COLLEGE PARK, MARYLAND
Dear MSMTA Members,
Music enriches our lives in so many different ways and this year the 50th MSMTA Conference was a stunning testament. The conference provided an excitement for learning that was both emotional and contagious. The teacher members who attended the event this January at College Park will attest that the presenters and performers were extraordinary. I personally would like to applaud the conference committee for their commitment, intellect, and love of music.
Thank you all.
Ann McCandlissConference Committee Chair
CONFERENCE RECAP
We can boast that more than 100 MSMTA members were in attendance at the 50th Anniversary Conference at the University of Maryland College Park over two days which filled every possible moment with sessions, master classes and concerts.
Our featured concert artist was Santiago Rodriguez who gave a stunning performance on Saturday evening in the beautiful Gildenhorn Hall performing works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Antonio Soler, Manuel de Falla, Enrique Granados, Ernesto Lecuona, and Rachmaninoff. He returned on Sunday afternoon to give an inspiring lecture on Latin American music.
The conference held four Master Classes with exceptional
clinicians, each one so different from the other. Robert Vandall opened our first session on Saturday morning with great insight, ease and charm to performers from the studios of
Li-Ly Chang, Marilyn Briant, Yoon Huh, Andrew Zatman. The student performers were Daniel Du, Julieta Gozalo, Sandy Katz, Katharine Kong, Brian Le, Kathleen Lu, and Jennifer Suchan.
William Westney presented his Unmasterclass to a packed room that was enlightening, illuminating and totally unique. Students were Cynthia Chow and Kyle DiCamillo from the piano studios of Li-Ly Chang and Betsy Stocksdale. Please visit his website http://www.williamwestney.com or order his amazing publications: The Perfect Wrong Note: Learning to Trust Your Musical Self by William Westney or Heller: Selected Studies, Opus 45 and Opus 46 by Stephen Heller, William Westney
Suzanne Guy stepped in to replace Nelita True for the Sunday featured master class that illustrated her exceptional depth of knowledge. The performers were Owen Adams from the studio of Jeannine Case, Tiffany Kang from the studio of Li-Ly Chang, and Sam Barham from the studio of Carol Wolfe-Ralph. Suzanne Guy has published very useful material such as Expressive Etudes: Traditional Studies For Artistic Development at the Piano, Group Teaching and the Master Class, The Orchestra, the Orchestra!,The Music Box: The Story of Cristofori by Suzanne Guy, Donna Lacy.

For the members who were able to stay to the end of the conference, the final Master class with Phyllis Bryn-Julson was the icing on the cake due to the exceptionally outstanding preceding session with Elam Sprenkle on “The Great American Songbook.” Please see the program below and know that those who were able to attend were in awe of the talented Ms. Bryn-Julson.

STRINGS PLUS ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL
The Mondzac Performing Arts Center at Landon School in Bethesda was alive with the sounds of chamber music Sunday, March 2, 2008. Participating in MSMTA’s Strings Plus Ensemble Festival were 164 talented, young violinists, violists, cellists and pianists. Duets, trios, quartets and quintets performed compositions including works by Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and even John Lennon. Participants ranged in age from 6 – 18. Students were well prepared and obviously enjoyed playing the chamber works. In closing comments, more than one judge complimented the high level of achievement in such young students.
Fifteen teachers participated in the festival and sent a total of 55 groups. These teachers were Chen-Tai Chen, Mia Choi, Chang Liu, Duck Hee O’Donnell, Lisa Ponton, Jean Provine, Adrian Semo, Jennifer Shannon, Elena Shekhonina, Judy Silverman, Catherine Stewart, Chen-Li Tzeng, Xue Wang, Margaret Wright, and Miron Yampolsky. We look forward to more teachers and students taking the opportunity to experience chamber music next year.
We would like to thank all those people who helped make this event successful.
JUDGES: Shari Fast, Chang Liu, Jean Provine, Lisa Ponton and Paul Scimonelli
MONITORS: Chen-Tai Chen, Elena Shekhonina, Judy Silverman, Jennifer Shannon and Xue Wang
A special thank you is in order for Paul Scimonelli (who filled in to judge at the last minute) Earl Jackson and the Landon School for making it possible to use their wonderful facility. Of course, special kudos to the students and their teachers who participated in the Strings Plus Festival. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

MSMTA Board Dr. Carol Wolfe-Ralph6102 Gallery StreetBowie, MD 20720
Dear MSMTA Board,
After much careful consideration, and discussions with Carol Wolfe-Ralph, I have decided to resign my position as VP for Publications. The growth in the theory program, plus the changes necessary to integrate the theory program with the University of Maryland, and to develop a theory data-base, have put an added time constraint on me. Additional professional as well as volunteer obligations compete for my time. I have enjoyed the time spent on publications, but at the present time feel that I need to turn it over to another member.
Respectfully yours,
Deborah White-BondhusVice-President Publications MSMTA

LOCAL ASSOCIATIONSGinger Cove Retirement community was the setting for AAMTA’s annual Holiday Festival on December 8th. Co-chaired by Katya Merchant and Betsy Green thirty-two
students representing six studios were presented in two recitals, performing
traditional holiday favorites and other selections appropriate for the season. In addition to piano solos and duets the programs featured vocal solos, piano trios and a bell choir.
Ray Hobbs and Bill Bloomquist co-chaired the first event of the New Year, the Winter Recital, held on February 3rd in St. John’s College’s McDowell Hall.
Super Bowl Sunday notwithstanding, forty-six students from seven studios filled four recitals: two judged, one non-judged and a non-judged recital for adults.
Our January General Meeting included a group discussion on teaching theory. At our February meeting Ray Hobbs gave a presentation on improvisation. Noting that we already possess the essential key to this skill (listening) he advised starting with a melody, next adding a bass line and finally inner voices. Increased facility and skill comes with practice!
Interested individuals may hear Ray showcasing his skills at Annie’s Paramount Steak and Seafood House in Grasonville (on the Eastern Shore) on Wednesday evenings—proving that he practices what he teaches!
Submitted by Ellen Winner
Repertoire sharing was the focus of our November members= meeting at the home of Joanna Greenwood. This was a wonderful opportunity to examine and hear new music published recently, as well as older favorites that have been reissued. Our second student recital took place February 3. Participating teachers were Joanna Greenwood, Jane Kahn, Ruth Peng, Betsy Stocksdale and Suela Shkurti. Keyboard Musicianship took place Feb 10 and Theory Testing is scheduled for March 2.
On Saturday, March 8, at 4:00 pm an upper intermediate/ advanced level Master Class will be given by member Dr. Stephanie Bruning, on the faculty at Morgan State University. In April the Fairy Tale Recital will be held at the Enoch Pratt Free Library. Younger students will play interactive singing and rhythm games and will be entertained by a recital of pieces with a fairy tale theme, including a piano arrangement of Peter and the Wolf, narrated by a librarian from the Children’s Department.
Two teachers in the Greater Baltimore MTA sponsored students who received the Judith Ferencz Award, presented by Jordan Kitts Music Store and announced at the state convention in January. The teachers are Ann McCandliss and
Daniel Lau.
Patricia Graham, President
GREATER COLUMBIA MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
Greater Columbia Music Teachers Association is managing a rollicking good year of music, kicked off by our first Keyboard Musicianship Exams and our Friends and Family Concert, a warm afternoon of students performing with their musical friends and family members. Thanks to Constance Fischel, Olga Kuperstein, and Deborah White-Bondhus for making these events possible.
On March 30, from 2 until 5 p.m., Kay Patterson will host a Master Class at her studio with clinician Joy Puckett Schreier. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL TEACHERS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND THIS EVENT FREE OF CHARGE! For directions or last minute details, call Kay @ 410-772-1680.
With the exception of a Judged Recital hosted by David Holmes in his studio, our remaining events will take place in April. We were sorry to lose our venue suddenly for Outreach Recitals this year, postponing our donation plan for Ronald McDonald House. Deborah White Bondhus is hard at work identifying perhaps an even better venue for this outreach. She takes the spirit of this event very much to heart.
Montgomery County Music Teachers Association has been having excellent meeting programs thanks to our program chairs, Nicole Amyot and Bonnie Kellert. At our December meeting, one of our members, Louise Kupelian, treated us to a delightful Jazz program which included her renditions of Misty and her own variations on Happy Birthday with reminiscences of Mozart, Chopin and Joplin. This was followed by a potluck luncheon. The camaraderie was wonderful to see.
At our February meeting, physical therapists Jennifer Dabbs and Stephanie Coleman from Sport and Spinal physical therapy gave presentations of anatomy fundamentals, common injuries and injury prevention for musicians. This was both insightful and informative, and I believe many of our members benefited from the presentation.
Our next meeting will be on March 18 with our member, Barbara Wing.

HCMTA held five Student Recitals on November 17 at Howard Community College’s Monteabaro Recital Hall. Recital Chair, Alla Merport, reported that the day was extremely successful, with 88 students participating from 11 studios. Our Theme Festival, The Key to the Mood is scheduled for February 23 at the same venue. Kathryn Stansbery, Chair, has scheduled four recitals for this event.
On December 1 Christopher Hall chaired our second MSMTA Keyboard Exam Center. With the center chaired by Olga Kuperstein in November, HCMTA accommodated 223 students.
Upcoming events: Theory Testing, HCMTA’s Ensemble Competition, Miriam Thomann Competition, Three-Piece Competition, the Spring Piano Festival, and the High School Award Competition.
Following our General Meeting on February 15, we will have a discussion on “Efficiency in Practicing.”

On March 9, the Prince George’s Music Teachers Association held their 46th Annual Broad Creek Competition at Prince George’s Community College. Chaired by Linda Head, this event was judged by Joyce Crist, Debra Smedley and Donna C. White. The competition has set literature and this year featured Romantic Composers. Gary Dinn chaired the committee that chose the literature, assisted by Janet Swaney and Ann Matteson. The winners concert is held one week later, on March 16 at Harmony Hall in Ft. Washington. Winners of the Saul Roas Memorial Scholarship Competition will also play at this concert. The scholarship competition was chaired by Dr. Gail McDonald and June Miller and held on February 10 at Jordan Kitts Music Store.
Our MSMTA Theory Testing at Prince George’s Community College is scheduled for Sunday, April 13 and chaired by Ellen Sakai.
Thanks go to all the above-mentioned people and participating teachers who have made these events successful and also to Mary Dumm who is the sponsor for the events that take place at PGCC.
Our last meeting of the school year will be a luncheon at the home of Ann Matteson in May.

Our students and teachers have a busy three months ahead! On February 23, we will hold our fifth pipe organ event at which students will learn about the King of Instruments and have a chance to play briefly. The emphasis this year is on trying the pedalboard. MTACC member, Angela Garvey, organist at Christ Church La Plata, is the clinician for this event.
On March 1, 98 students will be tested on music theory. There will be tests in level one through level ten. Janet Swaney is guest chair of this event. March 15 is the date of our Solo and Ensemble Concert, at which students will perform in various capacities, primarily as duet partners. At least one student piano concerto is scheduled, and we hope to hear from some of our band instrument players as well. Jennifer Hicks is the coordinator of the concert.
In April, the annual Sonatina and Sonata Festival will take place on the 19th and 20th. This competitive event is our most popular all year, and the Winners Concert on Sunday is always delightful. Lori Davis is the chair of this event.
We finish out the year with scholarship competitions on May 17. Besides the MSMTA $100 scholarship, we offer scholarships of various amounts for grades 6 through 12. Hyun Sook Kim is our scholarship chair.
Judith Dalton, President
As usual, Greater Laurel will have a full schedule of student events this coming year. We begin with our popular Halloween Recitals. Debbie White-Bondhus is our chair and our delightful “good” witch for all of the recitals. In November, we have two Piano Concerto Competitions. The first one has set literature and the winners get to perform with our Chamber Orchestra on an honors concert. We have a second week of competition where students are allowed to perform any concerto of their choice against students of their own age. An honors concert with second piano is held for the place winners on this event. Over the years we have asked a number of composers to write concerti for our younger students. Betsy Jo Angebranndt began this tradition and to date has provided five wonderful concerti for the very young. Matthew Edwards gave us two (one is currently in print), Kevin Hobbs and Michael McBride gave us one each and, most recently, Alexander Peskanov has written three concerti for us. We will be giving the world premiere of his third one this fall. We are trying to convince him to catch up to Mozart’s twenty-seven concerti!
Our ensemble festival comes in early December and is always well attended.

Greetings from The Music Teachers Association of Bowie! Our organization continues to move forward through a program year packed with a wide variety of student events and professionally enriching
program presentations for teachers, some highlighting outside presenters and others featuring the professional expertise of our own members.
Our first student event of the year was the first ever Stephanie Laios Composition / Improvisation Festival, which MTAB co-sponsors with the Greater Laurel and Prince George’s Music Teachers Associations. Among the participants were students of MTAB members Jeannine Case, Wendy Dengler, Bonnie Pausic and Marcia Slentz-Whalen. MTAB rounded out October with our annual Halloween Musicale, coordinated by event Chair Jeannine Case.
Our November General Meeting featured a program on Native American Character Pieces for Solo Piano, with Guest Presenter Stephanie Bruning. In December we presented our “Water, Wind and Weather” Festival in which each repertoire selection had to have some connection to water, wind and/or weather. For this event each participating student had the option of creating an original art work to be displayed on stage as the musical selection was being performed. To round out the calendar year, our association enjoyed our annual Holiday Luncheon, which was held December 12 at the Outback Steak House.
We ushered in 2008 at our January meeting with a celebration of the 40th anniversary of MTAB as we enjoyed a special video viewing of the historic celebration of our 20th anniversary. Our first student event of the new calendar year was our annual Chamber Music Festival, for which we engaged a mini-orchestra of professional musicians to collaborate with our individual students in performances of chamber music repertoire. Approximately 60 students, including both pianists and singers, from the studios of 12 MTAB teachers participated.
Our February General Meeting featured a program on Brazilian Suites for Piano, with Guest Presenter Cristine Brunner. On March 1 we will have students participating in our first competitive event of the program year, our Classical Period Competition. As we enjoy the winter beauty of God’s handiwork and move forward into this new calendar year, I am reminded once again of what a special blessing it is to share in the remarkable camaraderie that characterizes MTAB. What a pleasure it is to work together as professional music-makers, networking and collaborating with colleagues, and nurturing that same love of great music in each of our students. With music so important a part of our lives, we certainly have much for which to be thankful in this New Year!
Happy Music-Making and Happy 2008!
Marcia Slentz-Whalen, President

ACCOMPANIST NEEDEDDear colleagues,
We are (still) seeking an accompanist for the choir at Saint Nicholas Church in Laurel. This could be a GREAT job for an accomplished student. It is a part-time paid position.
Feel free to forward this to any students and/or teachers who might know anyone who could be interested.
