The project targets 52 union councils in seven districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in ve thematic areas of interventions namely Livelihood Enhancement and Protection, Health & Education, Disaster Preparedness & Mitigation, Institutional Development and Community Physical Infrastructure.

KfW and LACIP organized the rst-ever Mashal-e-Khyber Awards Ceremony 2014 to acknowledge best practices in project implementation under LACIP at a local hotel in Islamabad on April 23, 2015, which was attended by KfW ocials, PPAF senior management, representatives from partner organi-zations and award nominees. These awards were intended to appreciate hard work of partner orga-nizations and encourage them to put their best foot forward and work competitively to alleviate poverty in their targeted areas.

KfW announced the annual awards for partner organizations that displayed exceptional practices in project implementation not only to highlight their good work but to motivate them also. A stringent criterion considering impact, complexity of problem solved, innovation and eciency & sustainabil-ity of the intervention was applied to evaluate the submitted case studies from partners. A total of 44 case studies were evaluated in three rounds by LACIP Unit, sector specialists within PPAF and by a neutral third-party of PPAF against the abovementioned criteria.

Social Action Bureau for Assistance in Welfare and Organizational Networking (SABAWON), Rural Development Project (RDP) and National Rural Support Programme (NRSP) won the rst, second and third prize respectively.

Qazi Azmat Isa CEO-PPAF and Mr. Jens Clausen, Head of Peace and Governance for the Region KfW, presented shields, certicates and a prize of Euro 5000, 2000 and 1000 to the winners in rst, second and third categories. The prize money is meant to be used by grassroots organizations to enhance their capabilities to serve their respective communities more eectively and eciently to get the best results under the projects.

Installation of hand pumps under Primary Water Supply Scheme implemented by Social Action Bureau for Assistance in Welfare and Organizational Networking (SABAWON) in village Garha Matt in D.I. Khan won the rst prize. Before this intervention, the villagers, particularly women, had to

commute 2-3 kilometers daily to fetch water from the neighbouring village. The hand pumps instal-lation not only resolved the decades old problem but also resolved their conicts, improved health indicators in the area and reduced workload for many disadvantaged and vulnerable communities members.

Rural Development Project won the second prize for implementing the Link Road Scheme in Babakra in District Buner. The link road improved connectivity of the villagers to the main routes to have an improved access to schools, hospitals and markets. However, project witnessed many hick-ups as a lawsuit was led against the link road construction. RDP supported the communities to resolve their issue amicably. The case study highlighted the excellent work of PO in empowering communities to have a coherent voice for their rights.

National Rural Support Programme won the third place award for bringing a huge transformation in the life of a poor woman. Under its Livelihoods Enhancement and Protection project, NRSP provided income generating assets to Ms. Naheed Bibi, who not only started earning a decent living by selling crockery at the community level but also started sending her children to school with the additional income. Ms. Naheed Bibi graduated from being the wife of a beggar to the giver of charity and zakat to other destitute community members.
