Warning and safety instructionsRead the operating instructions be-fore using this machine for the firsttime. They contain important infor-mation about the safety, use andmaintenance of the machine. Thisway you will avoid the risk of acci-dents and damage to the machine.Keep these operating instructions ina safe place and ensure that newusers are familiar with the content.Pass them on to any future owner ofthe machine.

Correct usageOnly use the washing machine towash items which are specified by

the manufacturer to be machine-wash-able on the wash-care label, and tex-tiles composed of hand-washable woolor wool blend fabrics as well as satin, lace, silk and other hand-washable gar-ments.Any other applications may be dan-gerous. The manufacturer is not liablefor damage resulting from improperuse or operation.

This appliance should not be oper-ated by children. Supervise its use

by the elderly or infirm.

Technical safetyBefore setting up the machine, check it for any externally visible

damage. Do not install and use a dam-aged machine.

Before connecting the machine, en-sure that the connection data on

the data plate (fusing, voltage and fre-quency) match the mains electricity

supply. If in any doubt, consult a quali-fied electrician.

The electrical safety of this ap-pliance can only be guaranteed

when continuity is complete betweenthe machine and an effective earthingsystem which complies with local andnational regulations. It is most import-ant that this basic safety requirement isregularly tested by a qualified electri-cian.The manufacturer cannot be held re-sponsible for the consequences of aninadequate earthing system.

Do not connect the appliance tothe mains electricity supply by an

extension lead. Extension leads do notguarantee the required safety of the ap-pliance (e.g. danger of overheating).

The machine is built in accordancewith current safety requirements.

Unauthorised repairs could result in un-foreseen dangers for the user, forwhich the manufacturer cannot acceptresponsibility. Repairs should only beundertaken by a Miele approved engin-eer.

Ensure current is not supplied to the ap-pliance while maintenance or repairwork is being carried out.

The machine is only completely iso-lated from the electricity supply

when:

– it is switched off at the wall socketand the plug is withdrawn, or

– it is switched off at the mains, or

– the mains fuse is withdrawn.

The best materials are used in themanufacture of this machine, and

every care is taken to check all parts. However, with time, deterioration ofparts can occur, especially with suchcomponents as hoses, giving rise toleaks. Check the hose regularly forsigns of wear, and change in goodtime, to avoid leaks and subsequentdamage.

Faulty components must only beexchanged for Miele original spare

parts. Only when these parts are fittedcan the safety standards of the ma-chine be guaranteed.

UseDo not install your washing ma-chine in rooms where tempera-

tures below freezing may occur. Frozenhoses may burst under pressure. Thereliability of the electronic control sys-tem may be impaired at temperaturesbelow freezing point.

In countries where there are areaswhich may be subject to infesta-

tion by cockroaches or other vermin, pay particular attention to keeping theappliance and its surroundings in aclean condition at all times. Any dam-age which may be caused by cock-roaches or other vermin will not becovered by the appliance guarantee.

Before using the machine for thefirst time, check that the transit fit-

ting at the rear of the machine hasbeen removed (see section on "Installa-tion"). During spinning, a transit fittingwhich is still in place may result in dam-age to both the machine and adjacentfurniture or appliances.

Turn off the stopcock if the ma-chine is to be left for any length of

time (e.g. holiday), especially if there isno floor drain (gully) in the immediate vi-cinity.

Flooding danger. If hooking the drain hose into a

wash basin, check that the water candrain off quickly enough to prevent thesink from overflowing.Make sure the drain hose is secure, sothat the force of the water flowing out ofthe hose does not dislodge it. Other-wise this will result in flooding.

Take care to ensure that foreign ob-jects (e.g. nails, needles, coins,

paper clips, etc.) do not find their wayinto the machine with the washing (e.g.in pockets). Foreign objects can dam-age components of the machine, whichin turn can result in damage to thewashing.

Warning and safety instructions

9

Page 10: Masina de Spalat MIELE

If the correct amount of detergentis dispensed, the machine should

not need to be descaled. If, however, you do wish to descale the machineonly use proprietary non-corrosive de-scaling agents and strictly observe theinstructions. Consult the Miele Cus-tomer Service Department.

Textiles which have been pre-treated in solvent based cleaning

agents must be thoroughly rinsed inclean water before being washed in themachine.

Never use solvent based cleaningagents in this machine, as this may

result in damage to component partsand create toxic fumes. Such deter-gents also pose a fire and explosion ha-zard.

Only use dyes specified by themanufacturer as being suitable for

use in a washing machine. Always ob-serve the manufacturer’s instructionscarefully.

Dye removers may contain sulphurcompounds which cause damage

such as corrosion. Do not use dyeremovers in this machine.

For machines with a ’porthole’door, remember that the porthole

glass will be hot when washing at veryhigh temperatures. Do not let childrentouch it.

Always make sure the drum is sta-tionary before reaching in to

remove washing. Reaching into a mov-ing drum is extremely dangerous.

AccessoriesAccessory parts may only be fittedwhen expressly approved by

Miele. If other parts are used, guaran-tee, performance and product liabilityclaims may be invalidated.

Disposal of your old machineBefore discarding an old machineunplug it. Render the plug useless.

Cut off the cable directly behind the ap-pliance to prevent misuse.

Washing environmentally and economically– Water consumption and energy

usage are determined by the size ofthe load. Load to the maximum rec-ommended for the programme se-lected.

– The washing times can vary con-siderably due to the automatic loadadjustment feature. Depending onthe amount of the load, the mainwash may be shortened and onerinse omitted.

– Use the Mixed Wash poly/cottonsprogramme or the Quick Wash pro-gramme for smaller amounts oflaundry.

– To save energy wash normally andlightly soiled laundry at lower tem-peratures. The 95°C Cottons pro-gramme is probably only needed inexceptional circumstances, e.g. foroil based stains or where a very hotwash is required.

– A main wash (programme withoutpre-wash) is sufficient to clean nor-mally soiled laundry.

– By using the additional option “Soak”you can select a lower temperaturein the main wash.

– Use the additional option "Soak" in-stead of “Pre-wash" with heavilysoiled laundry. If “Soak” is followed immediately bya main wash the same suds areused.

– Use the "Short" wash option for nor-mally or very lightly soiled laundry.

– Do not exceed the amounts of deter-gent which may be recommendedby the manufacturer on the packa-ging.

– Reduce the amounts of detergentwith smaller loads, (e.g. with a halfload, approx. one third less deter-gent).

– Select the highest suitable spinspeed in the wash programme whentumble drying afterwards.

Before using for the first timeBefore using the machine for thefirst time ensure that it is correctly in-stalled and connected. See the rele-vant section under "Installation".Also check that the fluff filter issecurely tightened. Otherwise thereis a risk of water leakage during use.

For safety reasons spinning is notpossible until the machine has beenprepared for using for the first time. Toactivate the spinning function you mustrun a wash programme without anylaundry).

This also activates the ball valve. Theball valve prevents detergent escapingfrom the suds container into the sumpduring a wash programme, thus mak-ing maximum use of the detergent.

The wash programme must be run with-out detergent. Using detergent could result in an ex-cessive build-up of foam.

Turn on the stopcock.

Press the "I-ON/0-OFF" button in.

Turn the programme selector to "COTTONS 40°C".

Press the "START" button.

When this programme has finishedyour washing machine is ready forusing for the first time.

How to wash correctlyBrief guideThe headings numbered (1,2,3,...)show the operating sequence and canbe used as a brief guide.

Before washing

1Prepare the wash load.

Empty all pockets.

Foreign objects (e.g. nails, coins, paper clips, etc.) can cause dam-age to textiles and components inthe machine.

Sort the laundry

Most garments have a textile care labelin the collar or side seam. Sort thewashing by care label symbols. (Seethe section on these symbols for theirexplanation).

Dark textiles often contain excess dyeand should be washed separately sev-eral times before being included in amixed load.

Delicate textiles should be washed sep-arately in a delicates programme (usea washing bag where appropriate).

Do not wash any items in this machinewhich are specified by the manufac-turer as non-machine washable onthe care label. (h symbol)

Pre-treat the laundry

Badly soiled areas, e.g. collars andcuffs, and water soluble stains can bepre-treated with bar soap, liquid deter-gent or detergent mixed into a solutionor paste.

With particularly stubborn stains askyour dry cleaner for advice. Do notused solvent-based cleaning agents inthis machine.

– Curtains:Remove lead weights and strips orplace in a laundry bag.

– Underwiring and collar stiffeners:Any loose wiring in bras, shirt collarstiffeners, etc. should be removed orsewn in.

– Knitted garments, trousers andjeans, T-shirts and sweat shirts: Turn inside out, if recommended bythe manufacturer.

Adding detergentAll modern detergents produced forautomatic washing machines are suit-able, including liquid, compact (con-centrated) and special applicationdetergents. Use dispensing aids, e.g.balls, if these are supplied with thedetergent.

Woollens and knitwear containing woolmixtures and hand-washable garmentsshould be washed using a detergentspecifically designed for washing wool-lens.

Add detergent according to the amountrecommended on the packaging. The right amount to dispense will de-pend on the following:

– The quantity of laundry.

– The soiling level of the laundry.

Lightly soiledNo visible dirt or stains. Possiblyslight body odour.

Normally soiledVisibly dirty and/or just a few slightstains.

Heavily soiledStains and soiling clearly visible.

– The water hardness levelCheck with your local water supplier ifyou do not know the water hardnesslevel.

Water HardnessHardness

rangeType ofwater

(hardness)Hardness

I soft 0 - 1.3 0 - 7

II medium 1.3 - 2.5 7 - 14

III hard 2.5 - 3.8 14 - 21

IV very hard over 3.8 over 21

It is important to dispense thecorrect amount, because . . .

. . . too little has the following results:

– Laundry will not be properly cleanand will in time become grey andhard to the touch.

– Greasy particles cling to the laundry.

– Lime deposits on the heater ele-ments.

. . . too much results in the following:

– Excessive foam.

– Low level of agitation.

– Poor washing, rinsing and spinningresults.

– High water consumption (an addi-tional rinse cycle will automaticallyswitch in).

– Burdening the environment.

i = Compartment soak/pre-wash

j = Compartment main wash

p = Compartment fabric conditioner

Water is taken in through compartmenti in the pre-wash.

Water is taken in through compartmentj in the main wash. If the capacity ofcompartment j is insufficient for theamount of detergent needed (e.g. invery hard water areas), the machinecan be programmed so that water anddetergent can also be taken into themain wash through compartment i ,see “Programmable functions”, “Activat-ing compartment i“ .

Water softenersA water softener can be used to cutdown on the use of detergents in waterhardness ranges II-IV. Dispense ac-cording to the amount specified on thepackaging. First add detergent andthen the water softener.

Use a quantity of detergent as for softwater.

If you wash using several components(e.g. special application detergents),we recommend always dispensing theagents into compartment j in the fol-lowing order:

1. Detergent

2. Water softener

3. Stain salts

This way the agents are distributedmore efficiently.

Fabric conditioners, tex-turisers, liquid starchFabric conditioners make garmentssoft and fluffy to handle and help pre-vent static cling when tumble drying.

Texturisers are synthetic starch formula-tions and give body to items e.g. shirts, tablecloths and bed linen.

Starch gives body to items of washing.

Dispense according to the amountspecified on the packaging.

Top-up rinse (programmable):At the end of the main wash additional water flows into the drum, and the suds are cooled slightly. Hotwater might damage plastic drain pipes.

Graduated rinsing:The suds are cooled at the end of the wash cycle by water flowing in and being pumped away at inter-vals thereby minimising crease formation.

Rinse and interim spin:There is a spin between the rinses.

Final spin:The maximum spin speed according to the programme can be selected with the Spin button. In theprogrammes MINIMUM IRON, DELICATES, and MIXED WASH, the spin speed is automatically limitedto the above stated maximum spin speed.

Anti-crease, loosen:The anti-crease action guards against the tendency for creases to set in when fabrics have been left inthe drum for a long time. There is drum movement twice a minute.

Cleaning and careCleaning the washing machine

Clean the casing with a mild non-ab-rasive detergent or soap and water.Wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Clean the facia panel and flap with adamp cloth and dry with a soft cloth.

The drum can be cleaned using asuitable proprietary stainless steelcleaner.

Do not use abrasive cleaners, glasscleaners or all-purpose cleaners. These might cause damage to theplastic surfaces because of thechemicals they contain.

Extra cleaningCarrying out a hot wash (70°C orabove) with powder detergent approx.once every six weeks will help to en-sure that no deposits build up in themachine. These can occur when wash-ing is mainly done at low temperatures, and also lead to unpleasant smells. Ifyou have no reason to wash laundry oc-casionally at this high temperature, then carry out a 95°C Cottons pro-gramme as a cleaning cycle with pow-der detergent and no washing, at regu-lar intervals.

Once the flow of water ceases, remove the fluff filter completely.

Clean the fluff filter thoroughly.

Remove any foreign objects (e.g.buttons, coins, etc.) and fluff.

Turn the impeller by hand to checkthat it is free to rotate. Any foreign ob-jects causing an obstruction shouldbe removed.

Clean the inside of the fluff filter hous-ing.

Remove any deposits of lime scale anddetergent or foreign objects from thethread of the filter housing and filter unit(as these objects can cause a leakageof water). Deposits of lime scale areoften a sign of underdosage of powder.

Put the fluff filter back in place andsecure.

If the fluff filter is not put backproperly and secured in place, water will run out of the machine.

After cleaning

Pour approx. 2 litres of water into thedetergent dispenser compartmentj to reactivate the ball valve whichkeeps detergent in circulation in thesuds.

To clean the water inlet filtersThe washing machine has two filters to protect the inlet valves.Thesefilters should be checked every 6months or so, or more often if there arefrequent interruptions to the water sup-ply.

To clean the filter in the union in theopen end of the inlet hose:

First turn off the stopcock.

Unscrew the threaded union con-necting the free end of the inlet hoseto the stopcock.

Remove the rubber seal from the re-cess.

Using pointed pliers, take hold of the plastic filter bar, remove the fil-ter and clean

Put the filter and seal back in thereverse order and reconnect thehose.

Turn on the stopcock and check theconnection is watertight.

Inspect the inlet hose which is sub-jected to high pressure while the ma-chine is in operation. The hose shouldbe replaced if there are small cracks inthe surface, or if it has been otherwisedamaged. If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose able to withstand pressure up to70 bar. Miele’s own hoses meet this re-quirement.

To clean the filter in the water inletvalve:

Using pliers, carefully loosen theribbed plastic nut on the inlet valve, and unscrew.

Use water pump pliers to withdrawthe plastic filter by the bar (see illus-tration). Clean, put back and secure.

The two filters must be put back inplace after cleaning.

InstallationInstallation surfaceA concrete floor is the most suitable in-stallation surface for a washing ma-chine, being far less prone to vibrationduring the spin cycle than woodenfloorboards or a surface with "soft"properties.

Please note the following points:

The machine must be level and se-curely positioned.

To avoid vibrations during spinning, the machine should not be installedon soft floor coverings.

If installing on a wooden joist floor,we recommend a plywood base atleast 30 mm thick, 590 x 520 mmwide. The base should span severaljoists and be bolted to the joists, notonly to the floorboards. Check for thepresence of pipes and cables first. The most stable part of the floor isusually in the corner.

If the machine is installed on araised plinth, it has to be securedagainst slippage during spin usingretaining clips (available from theMiele Spare Parts Dept).

InstallationLift the machine from its packagingbase and move it to its site. Pleasenote:

Do not lift the machine by thedrum door.

Ensure that the machine feet and thefloor are dry to prevent the machinefrom slipping during the spin cycle.

Removing the transit fitting

Turn the left-hand transit bar 90°.

Installation

49

Page 50: Masina de Spalat MIELE

Turn the right-hand transit bar 90°.

Withdraw the two bars together withthe support plate.

Plug the two holes with the plasticcaps supplied.

The machine should not be moved with-out the transit fitting in place.

The transit fitting should be storedin a safe place for future use. Itmust be re-fitted if the machine is tobe moved again. Re-fitting is car-ried out by reversing the procedure.

Installation

50

Page 51: Masina de Spalat MIELE

Levelling the machineThe machine must stand perfectly levelon all four feet to ensure safe andproper operation.

Incorrect installation may increase elec-tricity and water consumption and maycause the machine to move about.

The four adjustable screw feet are usedto level the machine. All four feet arescrewed in when the machine is de-livered.

Screwing out and adjusting the feet

Gently tip the machine and prop itup using a solid wood wedge forexample, to ensure stability.

Make sure the machine does notslip as this could cause injury.

With a screwdriver loosen and turnthe foot 1 together with the counter-nut 2 to the left, (see illustrationbelow) and screw out.

Put the machine back on all four feet.

Use a spirit level to check the ma-chine is standing level.

Hold the foot 1 firm using a pipewrench and turn the counternut 2 tothe right firmly up against the hous-ing with a screwdriver.

All four counternuts must be firmlyup against the housing. Please alsocheck this for the feet which did notneed adjustment. Otherwise there isthe danger of the machine movingabout.

Connection to water supplyThe machine should be connected to amains water supply in accordance withstandard regulations. In Germany thewashing machine is not required tohave a non-return valve as it has beendesigned to comply with the relevantGerman DIN standard.

Connection to the mains water supplyshould incorporate a mains stopcockwith 3/4’’ thread. The stopcock shouldbe fitted by a qualified plumber.

The approx. 1.5 m long 3/8" pressurehose should be connected to the stop-cock via the 3/4" threaded union.

This pressure hose is not suitable forconnection to a hot water supply. Please make sure the washer sits cor-rectly in the union.

The connection point is subject tomains water pressure. Turn on the stop-cock slowly and check for leaks.

If replacing the inlet hose only use ahose able to withstand pressure ofup to 70 bar. This also applies to allfixtures and fittings used. Miele orig-inal parts fulfil this condition.

Longer hoses 2.5 or 4 metres in lengthare available as optional extras.

The machine is designed to operatewith a water flow pressure of 1 bar mini-mum up to 10 bar maximum. The staticwater pressure must not exceed 10bar. If it is higher than 10 bar it is essen-tial to fit a reducer valve.

There is a minimum flow pressure of 1bar pressure if 5 litres of water flow intoa suitable container in 15 seconds.

The two dirt filters - one in the openend of the inlet hose, one at the inletpoint in the solenoid valve must not beremoved.

Installation

53

Page 54: Masina de Spalat MIELE

Connection to the drainagesystemThe machine drains via a drain pumpwith a delivery head of 1 metre.

The drain hose is 1.5 m long. It mustnot be kinked as this restricts drainage. The swivel elbow at the end of the hosecan be turned in either direction, or canbe detached if required, with a sharptwist and pull.

Drain hose connection:

Direct into a sink: Hook the hoseover the edge and secure. Makesure that the water can flow freely toavoid flooding and to prevent waterfrom being sucked back into the ma-chine.

Connected to a floor gully.

Connected to a standpipe.

Connected to a plastic drain pipewith a rubber nipple. There is noneed to use a non-return valve.

If required, the drain hose can be ex-tended to a length of 5 m. The necess-ary parts can be purchased from theMiele Spare Parts Department, or yourMiele dealer.

For a delivery head of more than 1 m(up to a maximum of 1.8 m) a secondDuo-drain pump is available with thecorresponding conversion kit from theMiele Spare Parts Department or yourMiele dealer.
