In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful, In the Lord I will rejoice!

Look to God, do not be afraid, Lift up your voices, the Lord is near; Lift up your voices, the Lord is near.

Dear Parish Family,

What is it that you are most grateful for in your life? What one thing in your life fills you with the most gratitude? I

imagine you can think of many things that you’re thankful for, but take a moment and pick one. Pick one thing in your life

that, without it, your life would be so very different.

In the second reading for this Sunday, St. James writes in his letter: Dear brothers and sisters: All good giving and every

perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. James is reminding us that, indeed, God is the giver of

all good gifts in our lives. Be it the one, really significant thing that we’re most grateful for, or for the various gifts we

receive each day, all of them are given by our loving and generous God. Even in the difficult situations we experience,

there still are those things that we can be grateful for. No matter how bad a day might be, if we really look, we can find

something for which to give thanks.

Given the truth of all of this, what do we do with it? What comes next? We certainly can wonder with the psalmist in

Psalm 116, “What return can I make to the Lord, for all his goodness to me?” Well, one thing we do is we come to

worship. We come to Mass. We come, not to fulfill an obligation imposed on us, but to give praise and thanks to God for

being God. We come, not to be entertained, but to give thanks. We come to celebrate Eucharist, a word that literally

means Thanksgiving. This is where we come, mindful of all that God has done for us; all that God has given us,

particularly, in Christ. Truly, the greatest thing in our lives to be thankful for is indeed our salvation: that God so loved

the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Nothing we do in this parish is as important as our worship. Everything else we do flows from our commitment to give our

highest praise and thanks to God by participating fully, actively, and consciously in the Mass, the entire Mass, raising our

hearts and minds and voices to God. We do this together, as the Body of Christ, each of us with the particular gifts and

talents that make us who we are.

Did you know that it takes well over one hundred individuals each weekend to ensure that our liturgies are prayed to the

best of our abilities? Ministers of Hospitality welcome you to our house of worship and assist in any needs you might have.

Lectors become the voice of Christ speaking to us as God’s Word is proclaimed. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy

Communion assist in giving the precious Body and Blood of Christ to you, the Body of Christ made one by our Baptism.

Our young people serve as Altar Servers (and I must say, exceptionally well). Sacristans attentively and carefully prepare

all the items used during the liturgy, and of course our Ministers of Music lead us in sung prayer and praise throughout our

worship. Of all of these, however, next to the Lord Jesus himself, none is more important than all of you, the gathered

Assembly. First and foremost, it is the assembly coming together as the baptized Body of Christ joining the Risen Lord in

his eternal act of worship to the Father, through the Holy Spirit.

In two weeks, we will have our annual Ministry Fair in the Parish Activity Center, where you are invited to learn more

about the various ways to serve here at St. Vincent de Paul. Besides the liturgical ministries, there are many other ways to

be involved and to share Christ’s love with others. Be sure to come and see how you, too, can make a return to the Lord,

for all his goodness to you.

God bless you.

Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never “got around to it”. Maybe you aren’t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation — Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus reminds us that it is not

what enters from the outside which makes us impure, but

what is deeply rooted in our hearts. In the Letter of James

we are exhorted to “humbly welcome the word that has

been planted in you…” and to be “doers of the word and not

hearers only.” God’s word is a message of love, mercy,

compassion and freedom to all people. Is that showing in

our lives? Are we rooted in that Good News so that it spills

over to others?
