OLS Religious Education News “I would like to start our Religious Education year off with a team bonding / service project. I am looking for adult size t-shirts (gently used is fine, just clean and no holes please) to make tote bags for our students as well as bags to donate to area youth programs. A box is located near the exit doors on the large parking lot side of the church for donations. If you can pass on this request to family and friends, the more t-shirts the better! Thank you.”

A PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

“They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, ‘What were you arguing about on the way?’ But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, ‘If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.’” How can I serve? The path to holiness requires that we humbly reach out to see Christ in the faces of those around us. “In this call to recognize Him in the poor and the suffering, we see revealed the very heart of Christ, His deepest feelings and choices, which every saint seeks to attain.” These are the words of Pope Saint John Paul, as quoted by Pope Francis. These are the demands of Jesus with no ’ifs and buts.’ Holiness cannot be understood or lived apart from these demands, for mercy is ‘the beating heart of the gospel.’ When He washed the feet of the disciples, He spoke by His action, what a true disciple is to do. It is when we serve we receive not only Jesus, but the One who sent Him.

~~~~~~~ Next week is September’s Brown Bag Sunday. Today for your convenience we are again providing brown paper bags at all three entrances to the church. Each bag will have a suggested shopping list attached. All food donations should be non-perishable, nothing should be in glass containers and no expired items should be included. For those wishing to make a monetary donation, checks should be made payable to Feeding Westchester and placed in the basket at the altar next week or given to the volunteer in the community room. Every $1 collected buys $4 to $7 worth of food. The need is great - but so is the generosity of our parishioners. May God Bless You.
~~~~~~~ “How to Follow Jesus When the Going Gets

Tough…Follow by Way of the Heart” All are welcome to hear Sr. Jude Ruggeri, ASCJ speak on “Following Jesus by Way of the Heart!” at Immaculate Conception Church, 53 Winter Hill Road in Tuckahoe on Thursday, September 27th at 7pm in the lower church. RSVP to Sr. Cora at 914-961-1076.
