The Key to Evangelization: Start Talking and Start Inviting In the next month, if ten visitors come to your Sunday liturgy, how many will return for a second visit? According to Chris Walker, founder of EvangelismCoach.org, the answer is one or two. Can you guess the number-one reason the other eight to nine did not return? Because no one talked to them! The number-one thing most visitors are looking for is a friendly parish. How do they decide if a parish is friendly? They decide a parish is friendly by how many people talked to them. Make a visitor’s first ten minutes welcoming! According to the Church Growth Institute, the first ten minutes of a visitor’s experience are important. Those big evangelical mega-churches are big for a reason. Many of them have greeters in the parking lot, striking up what will be the first of many conversations a visitor to their churches is likely to have on any given Sunday. Make a visitor’s last ten minutes even more welcoming! But as important as those first ten minutes are, the crucial time is the ten minutes immediately after the Mass concludes. That is the time frame in which most newcomers make up their minds about the friendliness or unfriendliness of a parish. Did we talk to any visitors? Did we even look to see if there were any visitors? Or, were we just eager to get to our car? An easy solution—or maybe not The solution seems both easy and difficult. It is easy to look for visitors and chat with them, isn’t it? This requires a major shift in parish culture. It means we all need to develop new habits. The benefit to your parish But what would happen if we could change our habits and start looking for and talking with visitors? The Church Growth Institute did some research to answer this question. They asked churches to block out six continuous weeks and observe the number of people who visited once, twice, and three times during that block. Then they asked how many of those visitors were active in the church one year later. Guess what? The more often people visit, the more likely they are to become active parishioners. They found that 9% of the one-time visitors were active a year later. Of those who visited twice in that six-week block, 17% were active. And a whopping 33% of the three-time visitors were active. So how to do we get visitors to make return visits? As we said at the beginning, the number-one reason people don’t return is that no one talked to them. We need to start talking. And we need to start inviting. Three simple steps are all it takes: 1. See visitors 2. Talk to visitors 3. Invite visitors

LENT 2019 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

Lent is a truly graced time to take stock of our ongoing journey of conversion and transformation in Christ. We desire to cultivate an intimate relationship with Jesus making His presence in our lives real and vibrant so that we might follow Him more closely while supporting one another in our common pilgrimage of faith.

This Lent, we might reflect on a question that the bishops’ Retreat Director recently asked: Is Jesus for us a person,

or just a personality, a celebrity, a cult figure? There’s a big difference between the two. Personalities might include people like Oprah, even Elvis Presley or any number of people who have a following today. A personality is someone who has name recognition, but not someone with whom we can easily strike up a personal relationship. There are plenty of personalities out there today. An intimate relationship develops with a person, not a personality.

Unfortunately, for many of us, Jesus is a personality and not a person. He is the eminent figure in Church doctrine.

He is the one whose memory we celebrate in the liturgy even proclaiming the Eucharist as His Real Presence. However, without developing a personal relationship between ourselves and Jesus, He remains external to us, outside of ourselves, touching our minds, but not our hearts. He remains a remnant of the past because we instinctively place twenty centuries between ourselves and Him.

Yet, Jesus says, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Mt.28:20). The Resurrected Christ is alive and

present, not physically as He had been, but His presence today is even stronger and more real. Christ is not only beside us but dwells within us. Therein lies our hope and confidence during these troublesome times.

Particularly during our Lenten journey, the Church asks us to focus our attention on Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving.

These spiritual disciplines are indispensable means to strengthen our personal relationship with Jesus. Additionally, I hope that you avail yourself of the Lenten programs and liturgies provided by your parish. These will help you grow in love and knowledge of our Lord.

May our hearts be renewed as we encounter Christ ever more intimately this Lent. As St. Paul announces to us on

Ash Wednesday: “Now is a very acceptable time” (2 Cor. 6:2). Let us pray for one another this Lent and always.

Faithfully yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Terry R. LaValley Bishop of Ogdensburg

LENTEN REGULATIONS 2019

March 6, 2019 is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Season of Lent.

ABSTINENCE

All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain totally from meat on the following days: Ash Wednesday, Fridays of Lent, & Good Friday. It is particularly important to be mindful of this obligation with the occurrence of the secular observance of St. Patrick’s Day on the weekend of March 16-17.

FASTING

All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound also to observe the Law of Fast on the following days: Ash Wednesday (March 6) and Good Friday (April 19). Fasting, that is, eating less, involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Lighter nourishment may be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day.

PRAYER & PENANCE

The entire season of Lent should be observed in a spirit of prayer and penance. Spending extra time in prayer or Bible study, attending daily Mass, voluntary sacrifice and self-denial, combined with works of charity and service to others, are all excellent ways to obey the Lord's command to reform our lives and to prepare for the joyful celebration of Easter. Parishes are highly encouraged to offer periods of Eucharistic Adoration during the Lenten Season, as well as, the traditional devotions of the Stations of the Cross and the recitation of the Rosary.

SACRAMENT OF PENANCE

Bishop LaValley encourages parishes throughout the Diocese to offer an extended period for the Sacrament of Penance. Some recent observances have been “The Light is on for You” or “24 Hours with the Lord”. In addition to this occasion, other occasions for the Sacrament of Penance should be made available during the Lenten Season and the Sacred Triduum.

Page 9: MASS SCHEDULE - d2y1pz2y630308.cloudfront.net · 03/03/2019  · SANCTUARY LIGHT A beneficial spiritual practice in our churches allows people to request that the Sanctuary Lamp before

EASTER DUTY

All Catholics who have reached the age of reason must confess their serious sins in the Sacrament of Penance at least once a year. They must also receive Holy Communion at least once each year between the First Sunday of Lent (March 10) and Trinity Sunday (June 16).

MARRIAGE

Although other seasons are more suitable, the celebration of marriage and the Nuptial Mass are not forbidden during Lent, according to The Code of Canon Law. When liturgical rules permit, the Ritual Mass for the Celebration of Marriage may be used and the nuptial blessing may be given. However, you should advise the spouses and their guests to exercise proper restraint in accord with the penitential character of Lent.

OBLIGATION

All Christ’s faithful are obliged by divine law to do penance. The days set aside for fast and abstinence in Lent are special ways of doing penance and are an expression of unity for all the Church.

CHRISM MASS

A reminder that this year’s Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 11th at 11:00 am at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg. Details pertaining to this event will be forthcoming.

FUNERALS DURING THE SACRED TRIDUUM

On Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, Funeral Masses may not be celebrated. However, a Funeral Service consisting of the Liturgy of the Word and the Final Commendation may be held in Church.

Please bring these Lenten Regulations to the attention of your people by publishing them in the bulletin and by reminders in oral announcements. Thank You!
